After many suggestions, it's finally time to take a look at Forged In Fire. Arguably the most intense show on the History Channel. It's basically Master Chef mixed with Deadliest Warrior, I know, just what you asked for. It's definitely no Pawn Stars I'll say that much. Anyways enjoy this silly show about guys making blades and stuff.

I watched an interview in why he left the show and turns out he'd always made sure it was purely about skill and ability, but the History Channel started interfering, telling him to let people who had been disqualified for whatever reason to be allowed to continue because they wanted certain people to win, so he left rather than do that.

A while ago i couldnt figure out what to watch on netflix so i tried the 'random' button and it gave me this show. I love this show, it's insanely good. I passed by it in my 'suggestions' so many times because i thought it was going to be stupid af. Glad netflix decided to be like "LOOK AT THIS SHOW YOU NIMROD!!!"
Side note: It's actually KEAL (Keep everyone alive), if anyone is wondering why they are allowed to say 'kill'

I actually used to watch this show when it first came out. The show was initially just like you showed, with skilled blademakers (10+ years experience) competing in a forge, etc. The later seasons get a little looser. They start getting really inexperienced smiths and add all kinds of twists, like forcing them to work outside with a coal forge when most of them have only worked with gas, or making them search through a pile of scrap metal to forge their blades. The quality quickly slid.

I am an unashamed fan of this show. It is my dad and I's favorite show. It is honestly so wholesome and I genuinely learnt a lot from it. Like it pushed me to take a forging class and make my own knife!

The reason they have to turn in their blades is because this is filmed in a state (i think NY) where its illegal to make or forge weapons on camera. So these blades are called "props". The contestants cant take props home, so they leave them. The losing blades do get sent back to them once the episode airs though. The winning blade is kept and put on display.

Forged in Fire is a pretty great show. Something i've noticed, there's never been like... Disrespect on this show. Y'know how someone will typically talk a lot of shit or like sabotage their competitors in some way or another? None of that bullshit here. In fact, i've seen multiple times they've actively helped one another during the competition.
Edit: you adding all the disrespect they aren't saying is hilarious, keep doing these

you should check out top shot, also from the history channel. it’s similar in that it’s overly dramatic and weird for the history channel. it’s a shooting competition show and i was OBSESSED with it and it just got more unhinged as it went on. like i remember one episode where they shot cannons and the host was like “if you’re really a top shot you can shoot any weapon even a cannon”

He refused to do it and said ever since then the show producers had a target on his back

Watched this a lot with my parents, we love it! Smithing is such a cool (sadly dying) profession and while I could never do it it‘s cool to watch, the wholesomenss and good vibes between the contestants is great too :) watching the blade testing is just satisfying, you‘re just watching cool knives cut through things (or occasionally fail). „this blade will kiiiilll“ is also a running gag between me and my parents now
I feel like I should mention there‘s a very similar show called „the butcher“ that‘s literally about people cutting up meat into nice expensive parts but in the same competition format, also pretty cool

Please, please, lease look up Ryu and where he is now. I just read the Brute de Forge article on him that was written last year (suggest everyone to read it). The guy was homeless, living in the woods, and "borrowed" his friend's back yard for his forge because they couldn't film in the forest. That's why the fire dept was called: the neighbors weren't used to some guy making swords in their community and got scared.
And he didn't even use the winnings on himself! He went back to the Philippines and went to villages that still relied on blades for work, and taught them how to work the metal properly, and got them equipment they needed. This guy is a saint and I respect the hell out of him.
He's doing very well for himself and has learned a lot since he was on the show. He never had a proper teacher, he's completely self taught and worked with what he had available to him. That's why he didn't use a lot of the power tools: He just didn't know how to utilize them properly and didn't want to waste his 3 hours trying to learn, so he used what he had a basic grasp on and ignored the rest. I'm pretty sure him using the hammer machine was him testing how it worked, and when it messed up the blade he was "alright, I tried it and it didn't go well. Back to basics".
If I ever get a decent cash flow in my life, I want to get one of his blades. It'll be a wait though because he's apparently got a years backlog of orders! Happy for him.
