@@HowToDoitright thanks. I just now replaced my original 12v battery after a decade. I tried price shopping for a new battery but they were all over 200 (including this AC Delco) so I ended up just going to AutoZone
I recently had this happen when I was at a hardware lumber yard cutting some wood I needed. I left my blinkers on not realizing that that is actually being powered by the actual 12 volt battery and apparently I can drain it pretty quickly if you leave them on for too long. But I thought maybe if I just shut off the car for a while completely maybe the hybrid battery would trickle charge the 12 volt battery? I mean I have a 2018. Not really sure how the whole system works but it was the only thing I could think to do. Only had the car for a few weeks now and surprisingly I was able to get it to start again. Plus the hybrid battery was nearly full so even increased my mileage a bit poking through the rest of the lumber yard back to the entrance. I know this thing has a little over 100,000 mi on it and I know the car doesn't use a alternator so maybe I also need a new 12 volt battery. But I wonder would this car support something like one of those like car starter systems that you can plug into the 12 volt adapter just to give it enough to start the regular thing?
Yes you can use Jump start to start this car. This car needs less juice (CCA) to start as compared to other car. Your car does have an alternator. The only cars which are fully electric don’t have alternators and main battery charges the small battery
Thank you! It worked! My question is now: Do I have to do it everytime when I start my car untill I replace the battery or the battery gets charged after running for a while?

Thank! for sharing your detailed video on defining a Low 12v battery. it really helpful to me. But have one question? Which 12v batteries are referred to? It is the front of the hook or the BACK of the left Hatch trunk?
there is only one 12v battery. rear passenger side in trunk. the other battery is the hybrid battery which is considered a high voltage battery and no you don’t need to replace that.
For me it hasn’t worked today. There are actually no lights on the dash turning on, neither will the door locks work with the key and the inside lights don’t turn on. I didn’t have any previous warning of the battery dying. I wonder if it’s really the battery. Would The lights inside the car and the doors lock with the key if it wasn’t the battery?
The only way to tell that is to measure it with a volt meter at the battery in the rear passenger side. But if no lights are coming on then it’s fully dead and this technique won’t work.
What about when the car shows absolutely NO sign of life? I bought a battery charger from Amazon, tried charging mode, tried repair mode, actually got the volts up to 12.5 and the battery charge level was going up finally after the "repair" mode but it's still not doing jack when I put it in and try to start. I only get a red light on the keyfabs when I press, that's the only reaction I can get from it. Even the electronic door locks aren't working. I'm just hoping it has nothing to do with my hybrid battery, just the front one it seems. But I did replace the big battery a couple years ago, and my daughter left the back light on last time before it died. So there's a brief history on it! Any ideas?

Hi, i will try your trick tomorrow. Yet, i have two questions : 1/ does this trick damage the 12v battery even more ? 2/ if the 12v battery is not at all responsible of starting the engine, why is it that the fact of not using it for electronics such as light and so on will help the engine to start ? I mean if it has an impact, it means that yes, it is at least in part responsible for giving power to start the engine ? Thanks for your reply.
@@HowToDoitright thanks for your reply, so if i understand it well, the 12v battery is the only battery that will start the engine (the 201v battery has no role in that) but then, once it is started, the 12v battery wont have any role in the car moving anymore and the 201v battery will be responsible for making it move ? Is that correct ? If not how is it ? Thanks for your knowledges
@@ithrinej no that is incorrect. Not sure where you getting this information from but totally incorrect. The 12v battery provides power to all other electrical components headlights stereo etc along with supplying power to engine (spark plugs for example).
@@HowToDoitright well i get this informations from what i am understanding and infering from your video and answers. Then since you are saying that only the 12v battery is giving the power supply for the engine to start and to moove, what do you mean in your video when you say that "the engine is kicks on by the bigger battery", what do you mean by "kick on", or "prank" then ? Those words are those that make me confused since on the other hand, you say that the small battery (12v) is the one that launched and moove the engine. So it is probably just a matter of language : english is not my first language and mechanics not my field, so vocabulary related to it, even less. So then, just, what do you mean by the engine being "pranked" or "kicked on" by the high voltage battery ? Nice day !
Ah ok well don’t get too much in to technical part. If your car isn’t starting then just replace the 12v battery and you will be fine. Another way of testing 12v battery is by a volt meter or load test.
I came in here because I want to help someone who has the same problem as mine. Just recently my 2008 Prius went completely dead even after changing to a new battery. There was no life, nothing at all. I had to ask my friends to give me a jump. After watching many RUclips videos I found out that one of my fuse was gone. When you open the fuse box, at the right under C section, there are two blue no.15 fuses. I changed the second one from the top. After that I also had to tighten up my negative volt battery which is in the trunk attached to the back of the car. Make sure you unscrew the negative volt before putting on the new fuse. After that it came to life. Hope it helps someone.
Today I changed my 2009 touring prius passenger mirror and when I was done my prius was dead, did not wanna start. Don't know if battery drained while door was open but car was working fine before and during installation. I wonder if a cable became loose on door and that is preventing it from turning on which does not make any sense?
I will charge it tomorrow to see if it works. I have only driven car a couple of times since March. Is just been sitting in driveway the whole time. Don't know if this could be part of problem too? Anyways I will charge it tomorrow. Hopefully it works:)
Iam charging it right now. Right when I connected the jump starter portable unit all lights came on. Tried to started but no luck yet. The portable charger says battery is at 25%, so I guess I have to wait a while. Can I start car while charging or I have to disconnect cables first?
so i have a question because earlier tonight me my niece and my brother were at the drive in theater seeing clifford we accidently left on the head lights which drained the 12v battery i noticed this when i saw the computer screen flickering at this point my brother tried to start the car it would not start so he called aaa for assistance and while we were waiting we turned everything off in the car and took out the keys we sat for like 15 20 minutes then my brother and niece had to go to the restroom as they were on there way i git in the driver seat with the keys and was suddenly able to start my car i am assuming that while everything was off the high voltage battery gave the 12v battery a jump and thats why i was able to start my car in this event do i still need to replace the 12v or is it fine once the car starts and it gets charged and also the battery meter on the computer screen is that not for the high voltage battery and not the 12v please let me know if my assumption's are correct and if i need to replace my 12v battery thanks and also about the battery meter on the screen
I don't believe the HV battery can charge the 12v battery when the car is off. More likely when you switched off the headlights, the 12v battery was able to recover some voltage. This can be enough for the computer to boot up and at that point it probably is recharging the 12 v from the HV battery. In the manual of my gen 3 2010 Prius page 539, there is an emergency procedure for starting the car when the 12v battery is low and will not go into Ready mode. I discovered this one day while waiting for the AAA guy to come and jump my Prius. Virtually no one reads the manual, so almost no one knows about this. I posted this separately above.
Go to Toyota Dealer to buy the battery, its warranty is 7 years at least pro-rated of course....but it should be the same 12v battery originally installed in the Prius and the price is cheaper than other brand ,,,just go to Toyota dealer,,,it is cheaper!
@@HowToDoitright how is that expensive, i Literally paid 280 yesterday for my 2007 prius. Cuz they said i need the pacific battery for the smart key to work.

I tried this with my 2006 Prius when the battery was COMPLETELY dead, no lights, no dash functions. Holding the brake pedal down caused no pumping sound. I attempted it with several wait times, 20 seconds, 45 seconds, etc, nothing happened. So, I guess this video only applies if you have a marginal 12V battery. I was able to jump the car from another battery and get it going, but that was the only way.
Yes of course this is not for a dead battery. This method doesn’t generate electricity but reserve whatever juice is left in battery to start the car. If it’s completely dead you will need to charge it
It'd be nice if Toyota could figure out a smarter implementation of their power up sequence and cut out all the ancillary circuits during the power up process. Even the old cars with key switches figured it out, by cutting power to all the accessory circuits when starting, to give maximum power to the starter, which was the crucial component. After it started, the power to all the other circuits would be turned on. Surprised that Toyota designers didn't figure it out, as it's a pretty basic concept.
I'm sorry I need help. I press on the brake for a few seconds until the sound stops? Or press once on the pedal, let go and wait several seconds? Thank you for your help.
Almost nobody is aware that the Toyota engineers made a special procedure to force the HV battery to recharge an over discharged 12v battery that is unable to start the car but can still boot the computer, and go into accessory mode. This is what they say on page 539 of my 2010 Prius user's manual: " (Section:) Steps to take in an emergency (Sub-Topic: ) Emergency start function When the hybrid system does not start, the following steps can be used as an interim measure to start the hybrid system if the “POWER” switch is functioning normally. [Step 1] Set the parking brake. [Step 2] Set the “POWER” switch to the ACCESSORY mode. [Step 3] Push and hold the “POWER” switch for about 15 seconds while depressing the brake pedal firmly. Even if the hybrid system can be started using the above steps, the system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle checked by your Toyota dealer. "
The key takeaway here is that this procedure is done in ACCESSORY mode, not start mode. This is different from the procedure in this video which takes place in START mode. It is possible that while waiting in the HV battery will charge the 12V battery. One could check this with a volt meter across the 12v battery. I took this excerpt from the official user manual: assets.sia.toyota.com/publications/en/om-s/OM47668U/pdf/OM47668U.pdf (p. 549) I discovered this when my car wouldn't start and I had time to read my manual while waiting for the AAA guy to come and jump start me. I was able to start the car before he came without the jump start and I save a AAA call.
Has anyone tried this on a second gen (2004-2009)? I sat in my car with the engine off, and headlights on once. Tried to start it and was met with just a sickly clicking and dim dash display. I had to climb over the back seat (because the rear hatch wouldn't totally release) and get jumper cables onto the 12v battery. Started right away, but what a pain! So I wonder if your method works on a 2004?
Yes it works. The only thing is if you have overly drained your battery it won’t work. This is mainly for batteries that was on the verge of dying but still have some juice left. You just have to make sure all source of power is off like headlights, sound system, wipers, internal external light pumps etc. this gives all that used powder to start the car and then alternator takes over.
On my prius I had no any sign that battery getting dead, i parked approx 40 minutes with Audio on, so unexpectedly Audio turned off and now even ignition light doesn't comes normally, its blinking. I tried your method and unfortunately not helped in my case :(
I tried to plug out main power cable which comes from battery to fuse box, and when I plug i back there was some noise which I think comes somewhere from ABS block
Well your battery completely died. My method works if there is less juice in battery but in your case you completely drained it out. You will have to plug the battery to a charger and let it charge up.

Hahaha, worked like a charm
Yesterday it didn't start as usual...today i tried waiting for the sound to go away and it started
Got to say, Toyota could have designed it to allow using the high voltage battery to charge the little one, in an emergency.
Good point but The High voltage battery is way too small for that task. It’s not an electric car. It’s a hybrid.
@@HowToDoitright It is not too small, it holds over 1kWh while the 12V battery is around 0.36kWh.
Still small as compared to a real electric EV
Thank you. It work for 2020 Prius.
is it the battery that is under the hood? Mine is too dead. Not sure why haven't left anything on and I drive everyday
There is no battery under the hood.
There is on 2018 and newer Prius.
Today I changed my 2009 touring prius passenger mirror and when I was done my prius was dead, did not wanna start.
Don't know if battery drained while door was open but car was working fine before and during installation.
I wonder if a cable became loose on door and that is preventing it from turning on which does not make any sense?
marco lopez it’s an indication your battery is getting weak and needs replacement. Just charge it and see if it works
Will this work for my 2007 Prius?
Yes it will.
Go to Toyota Dealer to buy the battery, its warranty is 7 years at least pro-rated of course....but it should be the same 12v battery originally installed in the Prius and the price is cheaper than other brand ,,,just go to Toyota dealer,,,it is cheaper!
How much was the battery? And its 12v battery right? Not the hybrid?
Yes. Battery was around 120
@@HowToDoitright how is that expensive, i
Literally paid 280 yesterday for my 2007 prius. Cuz they said i need the pacific battery for the smart key to work.
Thanks!!!! Your video saved my day :)
Glad it helped!
It works for me too! Perfect, you are a hero!

This helps get passed the load draw, so it may have enough power to start afterwards.
Exactly!
Thanks a ton for this! Worked perfectly for me.
You totally saved me! Twice. Thank you!

You are a FUCKING GENIUS!!!! Worked with my 2017 Prius (12V battery almost dead) at the first attempt
Regards from Cancún !
Glad it helped
I tried this with my 2006 Prius when the battery was COMPLETELY dead, no lights, no dash functions. Holding the brake pedal down caused no pumping sound. I attempted it with several wait times, 20 seconds, 45 seconds, etc, nothing happened. So, I guess this video only applies if you have a marginal 12V battery. I was able to jump the car from another battery and get it going, but that was the only way.
Yes of course this is not for a dead battery. This method doesn’t generate electricity but reserve whatever juice is left in battery to start the car. If it’s completely dead you will need to charge it
Thank you so much! You saved my vacation!!!
Does this apply to a 2014 Prius? Thank you in advance
Yes it does
What about a 2004
Same
@@HowToDoitright I tried to do it and it didn’t work
You saved my life
Did work for me...thanks alot

It'd be nice if Toyota could figure out a smarter implementation of their power up sequence and cut out all the ancillary circuits during the power up process.
Even the old cars with key switches figured it out, by cutting power to all the accessory circuits when starting, to give maximum power to the starter, which was the crucial component.
After it started, the power to all the other circuits would be turned on.
Surprised that Toyota designers didn't figure it out, as it's a pretty basic concept.
It is a very basic concept that they could have implemented
That's actually work. Thank you so much
Thanks a lot . it works for my prius 2012.
You’re a boss dude thank you
Hahahahahaha it worked!!!! You my friend are a legend!
Thanks Mate it's safe my Day.
Thanks a lot. Its so helpful.
I'm sorry I need help. I press on the brake for a few seconds until the sound stops? Or press once on the pedal, let go and wait several seconds? Thank you for your help.
Yes you said it correct the first time. Until sound stops.
As was mentioned before, that 12 volt battery only boots the electronics in the car, it has no ability to turn the gas engine.
Agree.
Seriously save my butt! This worked! Thank you so much! 🙏
Thank you so much, oh my God this video just saved me!

@@HowToDoitright absolutely!
Thanks man 👨 🙏 it actually works
thanks i needed to take my car to get the new battery installed !
Glad it helped
@@HowToDoitright i think it might he the hybrid but i changed the 12v anyway so helped
Almost nobody is aware that the Toyota engineers made a special procedure to force the HV battery to recharge an over discharged 12v battery that is unable to start the car but can still boot the computer, and go into accessory mode.
This is what they say on page 539 of my 2010 Prius user's manual:
"
(Section:) Steps to take in an emergency
(Sub-Topic: ) Emergency start function
When the hybrid system does not start, the following steps can be used as an interim measure to start the hybrid system if the “POWER” switch is functioning normally.
"
The key takeaway here is that this procedure is done in ACCESSORY mode, not
start mode.
This is different from the procedure in this video which takes place in START mode. It is possible that while waiting in the HV battery will charge the 12V battery. One could check this with a volt meter across the 12v battery.
I took this excerpt from the official user manual:
assets.sia.toyota.com/publications/en/om-s/OM47668U/pdf/OM47668U.pdf (p. 549)
I discovered this when my car wouldn't start and I had time to read my manual while waiting for the AAA guy to come and jump start me.
Man, that worked. Thanks
Wow...very useful information!

Ahha! Wifes Prius just had the same problem.. On the way to replace the regular battery..
Oh my goodness thank you so much for this video!
Glad it helped
On my prius I had no any sign that battery getting dead, i parked approx 40 minutes with Audio on, so unexpectedly Audio turned off and now even ignition light doesn't comes normally, its blinking.
I tried your method and unfortunately not helped in my case :(
I tried to plug out main power cable which comes from battery to fuse box, and when I plug i back there was some noise which I think comes somewhere from ABS block
Well your battery completely died. My method works if there is less juice in battery but in your case you completely drained it out. You will have to plug the battery to a charger and let it charge up.
Thank you- works on Lexus too.
You saved my day, thanks
