So I watch these old Wardo videos and it just bums me out. We were robbed of so many great contests between him, AI, Slater, Fanning, Parko, and he would have just destroyed Taj. He was a prodigy far beyond his age and his personal issues got in the way of so much great surfing. Imagine him in a final against AI in 6-8 Chopes, him against anyone at Bells and Snapper and a world title run against Slater at Pipe. He was such a great personality for the sport that really embodied San Clemente surf culture and to have seen him mature into world champ would have been great for the ardent WCT followers. Instead we got domestic violence disputes, bickering on Insta, and the occasional 4 minute clip of a phenom that once was. I guess not all stories in the surf world have a happy ending
agreed that wardo is, arguably, the most naturally gifted surfer ever. the vids are out there. compare him, slater, and ai at 15-16 years old & wardo shuts hole. gnarly as fuck. had multiple chances on tour. couldn't conform, or choked, w/ smatterings of brilliance. andy & slater were just as gnarly, but played the game. guys like wardo, davo, & bruce were over it before it started. some talent wasn't meant for colored jerseys, judges & scoring. only people under the age of 35 don't know how talented wardo was.
