  • In Buddhism, loving-kindness (maitri) is the first of the Four Immeasurables, or Limitless Ones, which are Buddhist virtues and meditation practices to cultivate each one.
Most commonly translated as love or loving-kindness, maitri also means loving-kindness to oneself and is the foundation of the four virtues, which are:
    Loving Kindness
    Compassion
    Sympathetic Joy
    Equanimity
Buddhist teacher Pema Chodron has dedicated her life to teaching about loving-kindness and compassion-which begins with developing maitri toward oneself. When you start to develop Maitri the feeling is so profoundly peaceful language is incapable of describing it. Won't you try to find out for yourself?

It was challenging to sit through this meditation as I felt depleted by all the emotions that came up while listening to her talk. I'm glad I sat through this discomfort and now I have a better idea of Maitri in practice. Thank you for sharing this.

This is a fantastic talk and meditation; props to Belfast Buddhist for spreading its wisdom. If anyone would enjoy carefully scored music underneath, we have a slightly abridged version on our channel (to remove coughs, etc.). However, we appreciate that some people would rather hear it on its own, so whichever works for you!

I find when I practice the maitri meditation for myself that I remember moments when I've felt happiness and try to recall that feeling in the present and hold on to it as a seed. Also when I practice for others, my thoughts get too complex about any one individual. So I think about someone else when I realize I'm building a story around them.

Thank you for posting this but why not use a picture of Pema? The picture you used is hard to look at because of the glare. I love her voice too, but it is muffled. Nevertheless, thank you. My post may help you practice Maitri. 🙏
