Agnew and Nixon should have gone to prison. We would not be in the position we are in today.
The weakness of our justice system is clear. A despot who can run for office is not going to save American democracy.

Agree with you 💯. It's far too late to be concerned about how it appears to the world. Trump severely crossed those lines already with all his rhetoric, antics and mishandling of foreign affairs. Trump has committed serious crimes and need to be held fully accountable. No more slaps on the wrist. We have seen that it only allows it to happen again getting worse with each time.

Even Agnew was a political hit job. He had used some money to refurbish a boat that he entertained on with money for an expense claim. At least that was one of the charges. He did entertain foreign dignitaries on it. It may have been a stretch, but one could argue that. Most every other charge was arguable as well. Verdicts are not all black and white. Rachel is a political left-wing hack as it is. The fact is all the charges brought against Trump are mostly a stretch and many exaggerated false charges. He did have documents that needed to be returned. That much is true. Joe Biden had documents for decades in 5 different locations and none of them secure. Hillary Clinton had an illegal server and had top secret stuff that was hacked by foreign governments. So, let's get real.

Check list of laws and loop holes and cracks in our laws. Once it's all Democrat. We can fix the holes. That's an absolute need. Including laws holding politicians accountable to their oath. To the country. Not to the gerrymandering districts they have fixed for themselves. It's we the people. Not we the 1%. Lobbyists need to be out. Don't get me started. The laws need to protect the citizens making us and our needs over and above any corporate entity, pact or special interest. If they do not abide by these laws. They can immediately be removed from office. Everything, from the way we citizens are funneled for corporate money making..lol. seriously I could explain. But the laws should be written backing the citizenry... not in favor of money makers. They will still make their money. But only in consideration of and devotion to the citizens who have made them wealthy. Meaning ie : pensions for everyone again. If they want to go back in time. Let's do that by the laws that use to protect the citizens. If they want to make money in America off the American people they will secure futures and retirement for all. Not disgustingly over paid exec who basically are there right now to take from Americans.. their hands have been in OUR PIE. These corps are the ones who "buy" politicians votes and have removed over time even that had shored up us citizens. The chipping away is now to the point the wealthy who buy votes are trying to take military pensions, social security, Medicare. Why do you think? Because then you will have to pay for all that yourself. It's not enough that they have cut out every last benefit of being American and working for them. Now they are trying to take away every entitlement.. why? Well so they can write off their Lear jets. We the 98%.. should tell them NO MORE. sorry. On a rant... just stepped off my soap box.

I voted in my first election in 1973 after turning 18 in October. I remember all of this, Nixon, Agnew.
It seems to me other than Dwight D. Eisenhower, all the republicans that reached the Whitehouse as president did things that made the rank-and-file Americans lives worse, our economy worse, and our standing in the world worse.
Nixon (Watergate), Ford (the pardon), Reagan (Contra, roll back of financial regulations), G.H.W. Bush (more of the same financial rollbacks), G.W. Bush (Iraq lies and unjust war), and the very worst D.J. Trump, (Ukraine and US election interference, and "incitement of insurrection"!
And D.J. Trump (obstruction, espionage, violation of documents act.)
This is the legacy of the republican party. None ever made America Great or even again!
The packed court made the most harmful decision ever (not counting reversal of Roe vs. Wade) in the Citizens United ruling which left the majority of Americans without the means nor any fairness in fighting corporations' ability to outspend them in elections to get representatives in their own interests and not the peoples.

This broadcast, with the interview with Ron Liebman, is a great example of why what Rachel does is different from others and is SO impactful. She routinely tells the stories of the news from a broad perspective, in this case featuring the parallels with Trump's issues and those faced by Spiro Agnew. And I think it is her interest in deeply understanding things that leads her to such great choices as drawing from history and featuring in this broadcast an important person from it. I found Mr. Liebman's thinking so important to hear when he said that a deal that would keep Trump from running would not be the move for the DoJ to make because of the perception there might be that the prosecution was politicized; thus, undermining that Trump is simply facing the consequences of any citizen where there is evidence of a crime. I was not expecting that response and it has broadened the lens from which I am thinking about the situation with Trump.
I typically experience Ms. Maddow's choice of lens to be impactful in my understanding current (and past) event more broadly/deeply, and that is a huge service to me as a consumer of news and as a citizen of this great experiment in democracy.
Much gratitude to the network for being willing to have Rachel as a host and allowing her free eign to tells the news from the broad/deep perspective she can. And I appreciate the network's willingness to support her in engaging in other endeavors (e.g., the Deja News podcast) while still remaining on air.
I wish there were more people in the news who approached telling the news like she does. I am a well-educated person, and I do not find it easy to be sufficiently informed as at citizen in a democracy at this time. I know that she cannot cover as many stories as those who cover the news conventionally, but a different approach would be to have more like Rachel so that more stories of the day might be told in depth. In these times of complex issues and things to consider as a voting citizen in a democratic society, I would welcome this different approach and I would watch/listen to them all!

I was a junior in high school and allready had committed on paper to join the Air Force when Agnew resigned. The atmosphere in my social circles was certainly not sadness but rather a satisfaction that at least the DOJ had what they needed to convict and were waiting on Nixon to follow suit. Most of my companions were sons and daughters of parents whom were devastated by the murder of John, then for me, Martin, and Bobby. Even at that period of the late 60s becoming active in politics and at the least forming an opinion about crimnial behavior in high places. So myself and my social circles had made a vow among ourselves to always pay attention, be aware, get involved, and do something about it. And as we all know, life takes over, we go about our seperate ways and as you all can see now, We Failed. At that time was the first time i had penned an opinion about Politicians Desiminating False Information and Lying to the Public, why there should be a law targeting that particular group, penalties for violating such a law, and getting legislators to implement it. I, or we failed in that. And you can see clearly where the absence of such a law has failed the Country and endangered Democracy itself. There needs to be such a law!! It needs to be constructed, voted on, and put into effect. All this we are enduring now is a direct result of all aspect of politics in the absense of such giving that group cart blanche' without consequence

Wesley, you are on the right track. I’m from Canada and like most of my confrères we watch unfolding American developments with dismay. Your politicians lie and lie and lie. There lies are devastating to democratic polity. And, alarmingly, there are no legal mechanisms available in your criminal law to stop them.
Anyone who doesn’t realize this colossal shortcoming just remind yourselves that the only mechanism to shut down Fox was a civil, not a government, mechanism. Resorting to the hope that a law suit by private party (Dominion Voting Machines) to save the decline of democracy caused by calculated misinformation is beyond feeble.
Your notions of free speech are bizarre. These notions allow a malevolent force easy access to fascism.

My dad also told me I could do anything I set my mind to do. He was a great man, old school republican but really good to me.

As long as Aileen Cannon is the trial judge then, even if convicted on every count of every charge, he'll never spend a minute in prison. Home confinement is the worst that she'll sentence him to. While an Appeals Court can reduce a judge's sentence, they can't increase it.

I share the same concerns. This judge is clearly in the bag for Trump so this whole trial is probably a joke. My only hope is that the crimes are so crazy that when the public hears about them day in and day out, "he shared nuclear secrets, he shared our county's vulnerabilities,"... the public will be repulsed by it, and some of his supporters will abandon him. Then again, if all they watch is Faux News they may never hear it.
