  • This is a short clip from a really great night with my African Drumming students in Sheffield.
The busy phase in the music is a classic ‘echauffement’ passage where the djembe and dunduns simultaneously create fire and energy in the rhythms before finishing with a ‘kicking’ 3-beat finish!
'Echauffement' means in French 'warm up' or 'hot up' and in the context of djembe playing is about creating a build-up of momentum before a dancer's or drum group's finish. It is also used in modern African Ballet style djembe playing to initiate a group 'call and response' break in the music. It can also be referred to as 'chauff'.
