Those salamanders are meant for display and as pets. Not for food, its illegal to eat them in China
I think those are farm-raised salamanders. those animals are endangered in the wild, but there is nothing illegal about eating a domestic one. He checks Wikipedia about those softshell turtles that listed as VU and decides not to eat them when you can find those turtles in many US supermarkets.
Salamanders are endangered but only farmed ones are legal to be sold/eaten in China. If you get caught with wild endangered species in China you are seriously fucked. Plus for farms like salamander farms and soft shell turtle farms, they are actually required by law to release a number of their animals to wild annually and are proven to help with the population of endangered animals in China.

Giant salamander is so endangered and it is also highly sought after at the same time that it is farmed in China. However, you did good by not eating it as I don't think there is any proof that the salamander that you see are the farmed one.
It is called Baby/Infant fish (wa wa yu in Mandarin) cause it sound like a crying baby.
The proof is that the restaurant is still operating
Another proof is the price. If that’s a wild and endangered fish, it wouldn’t only cost like $25 a pound. The price is on the fish tank.
I remember a story my parents told me when I was a kid. When they went to adopt me they went with a few other families who were also adopting children from China, and they happened across a street vendor. A family happened to get stopped and was asked, "would you like to try snack." They said sure, and ate a piece. Said it was super good and asked the vendor, "What is this." They said, it was [snake]." They had misunderstood the vendor and thought they were eating a snack, not snake. Always made me giggle a little.

eating wild endangered animals is forbidden in china as well (connected with very hard punishment. worst case/ u can be punished to death if u kill a panda). the animals u see in restaurants are mostly from special farms. they r allowed to breed and sell them for restaurants. this farms have to release a special amount of the endangered animals they breed to the wild to keep them from extinction

As an expert on reptiles, it saddens me that people don't realize that snakes are just regular animals. They're not very intelligent, they can't curse you, I play with them on a weekly basis. all they do is just search around for food and warmth. They're not evil, and they can feel fear, pain and hunger just like any other animal. They're actually very sweet and gentle once you handle one for a minute or two. I've let wild watersnakes hang around my neck like a scarf, and they're one of the most aggressive on my continent. They only become aggressive when they think you're gonna hurt them. Once you show them that you're not a threat, they just cuddle against you for warmth. I've been doing this for fifteen years, and have barehand handled hundreds of venomous snakes and spiders. Including recluses and vipers. And all were wild specimens.

That snake looks like it wasn't actually shedding, it looks like a previous shed was stuck to it. That usually means that the animal was not being taken care of properly.
I would NEVER eat a snake. As a person who grew up with 5 snakes and mom working at at pet shop I love animals, even rats and all the above.

lol I used to eat sea cucumbers every day for breakfast and I'm not kidding. I got sick a lot as a kid and my mom somehow thought sea cucumbers would make me healthier. And we have a lot of those where I grew up (a small coastal town in east Asia) so it's not like it's too expensive. Any properly cooked sea cucumber in a restaurant would be very soft and jelly-like, but my mom just boils them in hot water along with eggs and they would become very hard and chewy. Always had to force myself into eating them.

BTW the soft shell turtle and salamander are farmed. The original wild species are endangered and illegal to sell but farmed ones are permitted. There are channels about how to farm and sell them legally. Actually there are thousands of farmers living on this industry. Since the law is strict, the restaurant will never allow you to film if the species are wild life.

But I am saying that it is illegal to do so, the punishment is very serious, and catching wild ones are much much more costly than farming one. Thus you cannot find wild ones easily in big restaurant like that and allow you shoot.

I’m sure all exotic animals they sell at that huge hotel is artificially bred. China has pretty strict law on wild endangered animals. If you do just a little more research on those animals, you can see that those farms, Chinese salamander farms for example, actually are required by the government to release a certain amount back to their natural habitats every year.
I am proud of him for not eating the endangered species.
