Interestingly I noticed similar and more clues between this song and "the One". I know people relate the songs to their own experiences which is the way it should be. This song sits differently when it's dedicated to your dad. I know it has the lyrics in love and the one and in the middle of the night I can feel you again.. but none of those lines have to be romantic in meaning even if they were written that way. And that is the beauty of music and Taylor's skills. When I hear this song from her.. I hear the lines like we might still be in love and think of the love between a father and daughter.. the line.. you might still be the one.. I think of my dad being the man to raise me and be the man I look up too.. and the line sometimes in the middle of the night I can feel you again.. I picture my dad carrying me to bed late at night when I had fell asleep.. but unfortunately he wasn't a better man. But I am thankful that Taylor gave me a song I can release my feelings too. Thank you Taylor.

My 28 year marriage is ending and this song sums it up well. I stayed hoping the magic would return, but ultimately, it never did and I walked away. He told me he hadn’t been happy for a long time. I wish he had told me that rather than treating me the way he did. Sad thing is I still miss him.

You've absolutely made the right choice to walk away after waiting and hoping and you should believe that yourself. Relationships in the end of the day are meant to make both parties happy and better, and when they're not doing that, they're not worth it. 28 years are a long time for that person to take root in your heart and grow and grow until all you can feel and love is them, but know that you can and still will find happiness out there, people who will love and value you like how you deserve to be treated. Everyone deserves what's best for them and even though it might have been magic in the beginning, sometimes they're simply just not the right person. It's better to realise and walk away, than staying in a fizzled out, draining marriage. It takes an immense amount of courage to leave them and turn a new page and what you've managed to do is so respectable. I only wish my mum has done the same. All the best wishes to you :)

Actually, I am far more impressed by her musicianship. She is a genius melodist. There are lots of people who could write lyrics like this, but very few who could write so many brilliant melodies.. and harmonise them so well.. song after song. Having said that, I feel this song's lyrics are actually some of her best. Because she wrote it for others to sing it is far less self-orientated than most of her lyrics from other songs.. and I think they work beautifully because it is easier for the listener to identify with the message. I am really impressed she wrote them when she was only 16 (I think) before she could have really known from personal experience about the themes of the song.

Taylor was WRONG to release it here. She's trying to take attention away from little big town. They deserve the recognition. They sung it well. Now, people will forget about them because of her. Taylor gets everything. If she cared about LBT, then she would continue singing this at clubs or concerts and let them have their version. I can't look at her the same way anymore.
@@IWantToMature85 That’s pretty hurtful to say, you’re talking like the song was theirs and she took it away from them, when it actually was always her song, she wrote, produced and recorded it, but since she wasn’t allowed to release it to the public, she was kind enough to give that opportunity to someone else. LBT had a long time to get the song known and spread and it’s not like people stop to listen to their version, we can all still listen to both. I even think that the LBT version is much better. If they want more recognition, they need to release something on their own. Most country artists don’t write and produce their own songs. They only get recognition due to someone else’s work. Taylor is famous for her own recognisable writing, so it’s unfair for you to expect she hands over her success to someone else. If it wasn’t for her, LBT would never get to sing this song anyway.

Each has different sound... And all fit with her voice perfectly... All songs she had created are relatable to many people.... Besides that, her sweet kind personality make people love her. Little Big Town’s from Big Machine, Tay’s old label. I think this had a new meaning after that Bluebird vid where Scott’s doing a commentary. She valued her friendship with Scott and I think his betrayal broke her.

Hearing a produced version of this song almost feels like my brain is playing a trick on me
I’m so glad I finally heard this song again after being in a toxic relationship, just like what Taylor said “I see the permanent damage you did to me” and it became a permanent scar but “sometimes, in the middle of the night, I can feel you again” almost every night but hey, “I know I’m probably better off on my own than lovin’ a man who didn’t know what he had when he had it.” So to the man I loved, maybe “you would’ve been the one if you were a better man” but thank you for the memories and for the lesson, I’ve learned a lot and I hope that you’ll be a “better man” for the next girl you love.
Not sure I’d call mine toxic but this song feels so appropriate for the relationship I recently got out of. My boyfriend of over 3 years that about everyone including his mom and sisters thought I would marry and I’ve never had to get over a true heartbreak bc he was my first love. Thank goodness for Taylor and her music-the re-release is allowing me to appreciate her music all over again on a new level.

Better man is about my second crush. When recognizing his true personality (he acted as a bully), I was very upset. If he was a better man, I would say love him at the end of high school' year. However, life is not a dream :))) One fun fact I want to share with you is that this song was released after the day I gave him up. Currently, when re listening this song, I hope he will be a better man now. :v (we have not seen each other for 3 years )
