  • We are in front of headquarters of the Tarrytown Fire Department at 50 Main Street, where we see and hear the fire whistle as it goes off for Box 1245 for a gas leak at 116 South Broadway. The way you can tell the box is to hear when the long whistle blast sounds, which indicates when a number ends. For example, the number five is four short blasts and one very long blast to indicate the end of the number. Anyway, Hope Hose Co. No. 1 and Conqueror Hook & Ladder Co. No 1 (Engine 79 and Ladder 37 for Westchester County) responded to the call, as did Phenix Hose Co. No 2 (Engine 76 for Westchester County) and Utility 61, which is based down at Riverside Hose Co. No. 4. Hope Hose is a 2001 E-One Cyclone TC. Conqueror Hook & Ladder is a 2012 Spartan/Smeal Sirius with a 105-foot rear mount stick. Phenix Hose Co. No. 2 is a 2019 E-One Cyclone. Utility 61 is a 1995 Volvo FE. Enjoy the view of all of the rigs that respond, as well as the Q2B sirens and horns, and the sounds of the old whistle, which was originally a part of a factory down by the river, but moved to the firehouse and converted from steam to air. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The videos were taken on May 4th, 2021.

This is a bucket item for me to get out there and catch that whistle. Amazing that it seems well kept and at full capacity. As most other depts always seem to just get smaller tanks and turn there horns down or off. Great video!!

Why use the whistle and not radio communication to alert the various stations, or are these volunteer departments? Great video by the way.

It's tradition. My department has a fire Whistle, and we have pagers. It's all about tradition. That's what makes the fire service so unique. The pride, tradition and most of all the honor

Wtf! Imagine living near that! There'd be hell-up here in the UK. It would not be allowed. Brits even complain about sirens! Cool video though.

The whistle can be coded. If the locale still has pull boxes, the can know what box was pulled.

I thought the age of steam whistles was over. Apparently not.

0:00-1:41--is that a Diaphone going off?

No, it's the large steam whistle (which now runs on air) which is seen on the roof above the firehouse.

@@FL92002 I stand corrected. I heard a Diaphone going off and it sounded like it. Thanks :)
