It should be mentioned that this is the extraordinary Jean-Pierre Ponnelle staging from the 1970s. The original is also available (both this specific aria and the full filmed opera) on RUclips. Judging from this extract the 2016 SF production looks very good, but the original one is a masterpiece and unsurpassable. It's great that it is being revived though, with young and excellent performers, and many nice new touches.

Maybe he's a baritone and (unfortunately) he's using the chest voice only in the low notes, like the female singers.
