Glad my Midwest trip this week had to be suddenly cancelled for various reasons. I will reschedule it for the fall with the lesser chances for severe weather. I wish everyone in the Midwest my hope and prayers for no severe weather affecting them, especially my friends there.
When did it change from Straight Line Winds to Derecho? I've never heard it called a Derecho in Texas until recently...

I was on Ft Riley in 2008 when Chapman KS was removed from the map. Our unit did cleanup. Large masonry school destroyed and houses stood no chance. Never saw anything like it outside of war zones.

You should go back to the 1880's and tell that to the German guy who came up with the term "derecho" for these storms. He'd tell you that since the word "tornado" is Spanish, he used another Spanish word to name these derecho storms, since they are somewhat related. Lastly, the Founding Fathers deliberately did not declare a national language, because just like the government can't tell you what to say, they can't tell you what language you have to say it in, either. They expected this to be a place full of people from all over the world and therefore did not designate this to be a place where a specific language was spoken.

@@kathleenking47 "derecho" means "straight" in Spanish when translated literally. Since a derecho has straight line winds, that's where it gets it's name. The reason the Spanish word was used was because "tornado" is already a Spanish word and the guy who came up with the term in the 1880's was studying tornadoes at the time.

I had been in one in Omaha, Nebraska in 2007, the wind speed was 90 miles per hour but it brought down many trees in the park and light poles in the park next to the hotel where I stayed.

Not to be an alarmist-they say those parts of Kansas could be places for a possible derecho sometime today like the one they had in Houston last Thursday-they could issue a tornado 🌪️ or severe thunderstorm watch with a pds designation-it could be a serious threat not to be laughed at! 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮

All any of us can reasonably do about all this is to speak out for what we think is the greatest help for all of us.
We can stop buying plastic products, buy used furniture, recycle and repurpose manufactured things, Also, we don’t have to live in suburbs, we can repopulate the inner cities if we wanted to. We could do away with our private vehicles and live in a place we can walk to get our food and healthcare.
All these things we individually can do to conserve. Yes to “tread lightly” on our earth I say! Individually each of us can do the best we can do, we can become the change we want to see. Choosing negative thoughts or positive thoughts are an individual choice.
If you ask me better, it is to presume and work for positive outcomes. So that’s what I would suggest to you. Don’t give up, don’t despair. This old world has seen a bunch of things come and go, and likelihood is: we won’t be any different.
