      Um there are a lot of people in the MLB that are not American... MLB is the top league for baseball, which is a sport played in the US, Japan (it's huge there), Canada, many Latin American and Caribbean countries, and I'm sure there are some other countries I'm forgetting. There are multiple players from those countries that participate in the MLB, and therefore, the World Series. The name stems more from historical reasons, like the comment above indicates.

      @@iangreenway5580 I get what you're saying, and the only two countries that have teams in the MLB are the US and Canada. The World Series is viewed in multiple countries. My point was that many countries are represented through players. The name is really irrelevant though because it began from a magazine's name that sponsored it or something like that. It's really not that big of a deal. Your original comment just said the only people taking part are Americans, which isn't true at all.

    So a big part of the metric system and how it relates to Celsius, is that it all links up. 1 calorie is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 millilitre (or one cubic centimetre) of water by 1 degrees Celsius. It is also inherently easier to teach, as the units for measuring weight, volume, and distance are all on the same scale, and use the same terminology (mili, centi, deci, kilo, etc.). Also on a more personal level, I find the fact that you guys can have -10 as the weather and it still not be below freezing, just trips me out.

    • @allenwilliams1306
      @allenwilliams1306 3 года назад

      Same is true of the Imperial system, e.g. 1 gallon=10lb of water... Besides using base 10 is highly inconvenient as you can only divide 10 by 5 and 2. And -10 deg. is below freezing on just about any scale except Kelvin.

    • @the_waterlemon5296
      @the_waterlemon5296 3 года назад +3

      The only problem is that the metric system uses joules as a measure of energy, and kelvins for temperature.
      However, a change in temp of 1°C is also 1K so that's fine, celsius scale is just shifted for convenience as it's 0 for the melting point of water and 100 for the boiling point at normal pressure.
      A much better example of how connected the measurements are is that 1 ml of water at it's densest weighs 1 gram which is insanely convenient for measuring since you can weigh the water (or any mostly-water liquid such as milk or juice) and get a really accurate measure without having to bother with how much measuring cups/spoons can vary in volume.
      And obviously, what makes the metric system even more convenient is the prefix system which works for every measurement, other than time (sad)

    I feel sorry for Americans, I don’t want to pity people but I genuinely feel sorry for them. From my, a 11 year old British girl, point of view on American life style is just sad, I feel like most are intoxicated by ‘being great’ or having to prove their ‘greatness’ towards others, it kind of scares me as well. Why do Americans care so much about other peoples opinions on their country so much? I’m sorry if that sounds ignorant, but that’s a genuine question based on how I view the country personally. It’s strange to me how much America want to boast about things but when it comes to tragic events, they don’t take accountability? It’s confusing.

    • @wittyblonde6728
      @wittyblonde6728 3 года назад +12

      That’s a fair statement and as an American I have been pretty scared too. Also the “not taking accountability” is because we have had a narcissist for a President the past four years. Not that other political leaders had all the time before but it just got worse. Many would rally behind him because of how much it would ruin their career. It hasn’t been until now that people on his side spoke out and they have gotten death threats. Also thank you for your concern and you are right... politicians and Americans need to take more accountability. My generation is helping to make it happen.
      P.S I am an American that does not think our country is super great. It needs many improvements... it’s seems to have stopped in the 1950’s with our education system. Civil rights is getting better but also worse because of the divide so it makes people not interact with others outside of their political beliefs... at least that’s what I think. I’m interested to know what others think because I want to know that I’m not the only one seeing the issues that are taking place. Sometimes being on the inside makes you see things with different eyes. It’s our life and we have gotten used to it.

      I see your point, but you have to admit that the British are also notorious for the same thing, I mean it's literally called "Great Britain" 😂 (I was just joking about this btw) A lot of British history is swept under the rug and not taught in schools when in my opinion it is very important to make sure that people are aware of what has happened in the past and the long-lasting effects of colonialism. For example, when I was in year 10 we were discussing the partition of India and the atrocities committed by the British and someone actually said to me we weren't taught about it so it definitely didn't happen.
      Also if you look at Brexit, it was based on nationalism and the idea that the UK is superior and better of without the EU and 'immigrants who come to steal jobs'.
      The US definitely has this sense of self-importance but so does the UK if that makes sense and many other countries for sure, I do think it is most obvious with the US though.

    "If it's not broken don't fix it"
    But it is broken when compared to the metric system ! Every single conversion in the metric system makes sense. 32 to 212 ? wtf? 0 (freezing) to 100 (boiling) makes so munch sense.
    You can even see it as percentages without calculating.
    Ask anyone, even those who don't know about the system. How hot from 0 (freezing) to 100 (boiling) is it ? It's just so freaking intuitive .
    Not to mention the rest of the inherent beauty of the metric system.
    1000g are 1kg. 1kg of water is 1 liter (volume) wich is 1000 cubic centimeters, or 1 cubic decimeter. Which means 1g of water = 1cm^3
    1 Meter is 100 centimeters wich means 1m/100.
    If we take 1m^2 and it rains enough to cover this 1m^2 with 1 Millimeter (1m/1000) of water (hight) it's equal to the volume of 1 Liter. It's just beatiful in all it's aspects and ratios, omg it's awesome.
    Also thats why the scientific community around the globe uses the metric system. Because it's awesome xD
    And yes the american scientists also use the metric system because they know what's good ^^

    "How is having a gun is a God given right but healthcare isn't?" So succinctly and beautifully put Favour! As to drinking, most parents in Europe teach their children to drink responsibly from a young age, that doesn't stop some making stupid mistakes in their teen years. The UK started to go metric in the 60's I was studying engineering at the time and became very used to working with both systems. I must say that the metric system is far easier to work with, 1 litre of water takes up 1 litre of volume (1000 cc) and weighs exactly 1 kilo. As to school shootings, we had one in the UK at Dunblane in Scotland. The perp was a hunter and legal gun owner who had become mentally ill. The system failed in that as soon as his GP realised he was mentally ill he should have notified the police to confiscate his guns, there was no such system in place so the knee jerk reaction was to make the ownership of firearms much more difficult. As many Americans say, that has not prevented criminals from getting and using firearms, though it has been reduced to to very small numbers. The high cost of healthcare in the US is possibly one of the reasons you have so many shootings, because the mentally ill dont get treatment there as it is so costly.

    Everything is sixteen years in Britain. You can drink in a public place, like a pub, at sixteen, as long as someone over the age of eighteen buys it for you. At eighteen you can buy it yourself. The legal age of concent is sixteen, so that's when condoms become available. Also, I haven't seen any development issues with drinking at a younger age, except for having a higher tolerance. I've gone drinking with some friends from America, and they can't hold it.

Same with police officers and guns in N.I you'll always see police patrolling with Assault rifles while most Police stations are built like military bases a leftover from the troubles. Everything else he mentioned at the start like Blocks are very strange to most Europeans as our cities just expanded over time leading to a more unique road system and layout of buildings. NHS workers and carers are the most respected at the moment. We all know how much they are giving, and risking their own lives, to help keep us alive. Today, we saw on the news how one elderly lady who was so ill with Covid that she wanted to give up, thanked the nurses that would not give up on her and nursed her back to life. She wrote a poem about them, in which she referred to them as ‘Angels with tired eyes’. I hope so much that the USA can find a way to unite again.

      It's technically correct- it comes from standardising and differentiating between Association Football and Rugby Football in 1863. Then Association got shortened to soccer by the British and remained that way (in the US) due to American Football being more popular than association football. The UK went back to almost exclusively using the term football in the 80s and Rugby Football became just Rugby 🏉
