Why TDE Failed with Ab-Soul

  • This video is going to be about a rapper named Ab-Soul. The Black Lip Pastor, if you will. He’s connected to the label TDE, the same label that has signed big-name artist a Kendrick Lamar, Isaiah, Rashad, SZA, and ScHoolboy Q. Ab-Soul has a really cult-like Fan Base, and has always personally been at one of my favorites. However, out of all the members in the group, he was the one that got overshadowed the most at first people thought he was great with being the underdog but recently, he did an interview with Joe Budden and revealed that he’s sick of being an underground rapper, and really wants to start blowing up. However, he’s been in the game for almost 15 years now, and it seems like the label is only pushing him now because Kendrick Lamar recently got off the label, and they have more money to invest into other artists such as Ab-Soul.

The industry said TDE failed, but real listeners say different. Soul is well known in the industry and he admitted that he didn't push for major labels himself. He knew his lane and his gradual rise to where he is now, soul is solidified. Also, These Days.... came out in 2014. Soul didn't need the radio, he's good. He may want too now but he's got to a point where he's solidified

Exactly bro 💯 I mean even being as underground as he is - he still accomplished more than 99% of artists all around the world who are trying to make it in the industry, simply for being signed to TDE. He's always been my favorite artist from the label (other than Kendrick 😅)

They also didn't believe in his first single with Wayne and kendrick, (all my life) will-i-am removed kendrick from the track and changed the chorus. Then kendrick blew up and completely took shine away from both game and Jay rock. Kendrick just took everything to a new level.
I bought Jay rocks album after kendrick blew up and it was ok, I bought the cd.

He’s showed insane loyalty to TDE, and Punch has showed his support, since he’s featured on every Ab-Soul record. However it’s obvious they care more about pushing out SZA, Isaiah Rashad and even Jay Rock and Schoolboy rather than Soulo. He’s easily my favourite of the TDE camp, and Punch Cleary respects him, but he knows that Ab-Soul ain’t for the mainstream. If Ab-Soul can accept that himself, I believe we will truly see his full creativity unleashed.

Naw mane. They don't care about pushing any of the artists out. Look at the gaps between releases. It's ridiculous as hell. 4-5 between album releases when the artist wants their music heard? Yeah punch and top are lame as fuck for holding these guys back like he has. "It's all about timing". The hell if it is. Majority of the underground rappers I listen to can drop 3-4 albums in one calendar year and get great reception from their core fanbase. Each album having space between them, gives each one its' own space to be appreciated. Whole record labels make these artists drop one album a year. Look at cardi b lame ass. People still thinking she's good but her last album was 2018. The same rapper who tried to brag about dropping 2 mixtapes in 6 months. It's not impressive, Curren$y dropped a project each month in 2016 and never bragged about it.

The rest are on interscope, big label. TDE is what made kendrick great, not the machine behind the commercial sucess. That is interscope, and for SZA it would also be RCA. All things considered the type of shit ab soul makes, its impressive the heights he reached.

They both use word play and use it well. If you’ve heard HOC by Kendrick, and you know Soulo flow you can literally hear Ab-Soul rapping the song. If it wasn’t about NOT smoking weed I would’ve thought he wrote it.
They’re both immensely digestible. They both use word play and similes so effortlessly is takes a second listen, then a third. The bars were already fire on the first listen. You didn’t know you missed anything. It’s not an issue, but a difference.
The difference is Ab-Soul is NOT on a major. The rest of the veterans are(Q,Rock,Dot). Soul is the only one signed solely by TDE. Kendrick did not pop until he released his album through Interscope and Aftermath. That’s your exposure, interview, radio play, feature, promo, and tour money right there.
It’s like D-league vs NBA money. An independent label could never push an artist like a major label can.

I’d like to see you do a video connecting the deaths in hip hop to something deeper, I would suggest that the deaths are currency for alchemy, or the deals they make in exchange for fame. Notice that almost every successful artist has a death of someone close to them. The longer they are in the game (movies and music and beyond) the more it happens. Even Obama lost someone right before he was elected. That would cause heavy depression like ab soul spoke of too. They all leave hints. To be honest, unfortunately, I don’t see ab soul becoming more successful, I feel like tho he hasn’t reached his peak musically, people don’t care like they used to. He would have to make people care. I love your content bro.

I’ll have to disagree with this… this makes it seem like TDE doesn’t have the ability to break a artist… and we all know that’s not true. At the height of ab soul was control system… HE decided to break away and not embrace the success he saw with that album. His next album was soooo far from what made him to that point. He himself has said numerous times that his mind just wasn’t on being the artist he had the potential to be. He often raps about this as well with that most recently being mentioned on do better. He wants something that he himself doesn’t have the mind frame to Achieve. Schoolboy had that same mind frame and was still able to blow up to the level of success he wanted. He is one of the few artist that has had many opportunities and let them pass by.

Control system was his most cohesive album. After that his albums sonically sounded all over the place. It’s like he hears random beats and puts them all together to make a album. Instead of having beats that sound different but still have a theme or a vibe that’s consistent. Soul should work with one producer and see what he comes up with. Imagine if he put out the album with JMSN or alchemist

Wayne was rewarded with a ridiculous 4-6 year run (depending on who u ask) doing features for literally everyone. Soul needs to find poppin artists that obviously cross over well, do features with them and revive his namesake.
Unfortunately, hip-hop is a young person’s game, you gotta be intensely current to even brush the idea of relevancy to people, Soul wants to be beyond “just familiar”. If TDE isn’t it and u have to do for self, the approach gotta be different.

The only reason Kendrick got as good as he did is because he was lucky enough to have ab soul in the same group as him and be able to compete against him. In a world where Kendrick doesn't exist, Ab is Kendrick. Sadly he suffered because he was on the same label as Kendrick and popped at the same time as Kendrick so TDE just decided to back K Dot coz he was more digestible. It's no disrespect to anyone but K Dot represented lower risk for TDE so they threw all their resources behind him, what's sad is that by not releasing Ab and telling him to go find a label that could make him their flagship MC and back him the same way that they were backing Kendrick, TDE held him back from fulfilling his potential.

He was one of the most insightful and lyrical geniuses of his time but bros music was usually depressing af and was geared towards woke younger men, which was too small of an audience to grow into mainstream. Bro had zero hits or radio singles other than maybe illuminate mostly from gta 5. Even his fellow TDE members only featured him on their more woke album tracks where they needed deep lyrics. Q or jay rock were usually reserved for those catchy radio hooks
The thing about making more slower emotional hip hop like tyler the creator is that bro was rapping about conspiracy theories instead of stuff more people could relate to. Doesnt matter how much of a genius you are, if you arent making club or at least radio tracks then no one will discover your music

Tyler the creator literally blew up off of talking about raping pregnant women and the most depressing shit with goblin on XL records until he made Odd future records, it has everything to do with the fact Ab-Soul wasn't on a major label that had the resources to push and market him like Interscope did with Kendrick or XL did with Goblin. You can blow up rapping or singing about anything if you have the right talent, contacts and investors to put you where you need to be at the right time.

Kendrick is deep, deeper actually, he just knows how to reach the masses through his strong use of story telling, vocal inflections, etc. I also think ab soul, has been dealing with alot, and I think he may have been a little salty about Kendrick’s success at times, although he loves Kendrick. I think Ab-soul and the rest of the world need to take a break from the desire to get something out of this abusive world. I think the best thing that happens in rap is for a musician to make a living without having to be a superstar. Ab-soul, Jadakiss, Sean Price, MF Doom, freddie gibbs, Roc Marciano, etc. These are outstanding artists that have excellent careers without having their names plastered everywhere. This is how rap will stay alive and flourish; having artists across the financial spectrum dedicate themselves to the craft.

The reason I love TDE. Loyalty. Even through the delays that Jay Rock, Sza and Soul experienced, they stuck to the label. What does that tell you? They're more than a family than a label. They don't show it anymore cuz they got real families now with kids. But when they were all in their 20s, TDE artists were like brothers and sisters. And it showed through so many videos that you can find on RUclips. I loved when Black Hippy were together cuz they'd just clown eachother. And when Sza first entered the label, you can tell Rock and Schoolboy watched over her like she was their little sis. Kendrick left but make no mistake, he wouldn't have left the label if it wasn't in good hands. And he still loves his TDE family and is still around. Sza the lead lady in charge now tho. Btw, can't wait for Qs album

They were having a winning streak 2014 sza dropped Z, Isaiah dropped cilvia demo, schoolboy q dropped oxymoron, then when it was solo turn to do a debute studio album with a major backing it, coming off of the masterpiece that is the control system, he decided to drop a social commentary in the form of an album called "these days" as in "imma make fun of the current state of hiphop & make essentially parodies of hiphop music because this is what rap sound like these days". Nobody fucked with it they gave him a 2nd chance & he dropped that mid ass project & 2016 do they shelved him & focused on there growing yet dying roster of artists they had left that can generate some buzz & money.
