Why TDE Failed with Ab-Soul

- This video is going to be about a rapper named Ab-Soul. The Black Lip Pastor, if you will. He’s connected to the label TDE, the same label that has signed big-name artist a Kendrick Lamar, Isaiah, Rashad, SZA, and ScHoolboy Q. Ab-Soul has a really cult-like Fan Base, and has always personally been at one of my favorites. However, out of all the members in the group, he was the one that got overshadowed the most at first people thought he was great with being the underdog but recently, he did an interview with Joe Budden and revealed that he’s sick of being an underground rapper, and really wants to start blowing up. However, he’s been in the game for almost 15 years now, and it seems like the label is only pushing him now because Kendrick Lamar recently got off the label, and they have more money to invest into other artists such as Ab-Soul.

The industry said TDE failed, but real listeners say different. Soul is well known in the industry and he admitted that he didn't push for major labels himself. He knew his lane and his gradual rise to where he is now, soul is solidified. Also, These Days.... came out in 2014. Soul didn't need the radio, he's good. He may want too now but he's got to a point where he's solidified
Exactly bro 💯 I mean even being as underground as he is - he still accomplished more than 99% of artists all around the world who are trying to make it in the industry, simply for being signed to TDE. He's always been my favorite artist from the label (other than Kendrick 😅)
Thanks for watching!
You guys are right but soulo literally been talkin bout his frustrations on him not getting any mainstream buzz for a while now.
These days was also full of songs that sounded like it was trying to appeal to a broader audience
@@louaista you gotta remember he’s mainly TDE. He never was involved with interscope and he was fine with that.
You gotta love these psycho people that create bullshit like this just to live in their own universe.
Ab soul is a salty rapper unhappy he didn't pop like everyone else in his group. Like most people in the world, Ab Soul was my fav out of Jay Rock , Kendrick and School Boy Q, the kid has bars but not the flow, cadence or charm of the others
Soul look different now, doesn't seem like his life's gotten any easier. Say a lil prayer for that brother, he's an incredible individual 🙏🏾 We need to start actually caring about each other again, Soul's dealing with a lot inside.
Yeah Soul one of my favourite and I struggled to listen to Herbert. I've always looked at him as a renegade but yeah he has been going through it.
With Kendrick's departure from TDE, I hope they can move more resources towards people like Soul and Jay Rock, widely praised by the hiphop community, but not mainstream
Jay rock suffered cause him and game sounded too much alike.
@leontalksrap yeah true she has way too much radio potential and they know that, seems like soul and jay rock are both too loyal to they're label and TDE are indifferent
@@Sjcstro84 wdym game sounded too much alike, they have a distinct sound just wondering what you mean though
@gnomeski6561 they came out around the same time, or rather blew up around the same time. The game had the aftermath 50-cent machine behind him. Jay rock followed or rather blew up around the same time.
They also didn't believe in his first single with Wayne and kendrick, (all my life) will-i-am removed kendrick from the track and changed the chorus. Then kendrick blew up and completely took shine away from both game and Jay rock. Kendrick just took everything to a new level.
I bought Jay rocks album after kendrick blew up and it was ok, I bought the cd.
I bought everyone's cd at the time. Game, Jay rock, kendrick. So I'm not being a hater. I'm just observing and giving my opinion on what happened.
@@Sjcstro84 yeah, kendrick really just took main priority for top dawg and all the other signees were left in the dust because of it
They didn't fail him. The lack of emotional intelligence on this planet did. It ain't over though. Ab soul is is one of the most underrated artists in the game. Bless that man all the way.
You used a Kendrick song as the backing track for your video.
You just proved your point
dang .... I just really like the beat haha
That Herbert album saved me. Never was the biggest fan of Ab-Soul but this album was different for me. Still in heavy rotation and it’s my album of the year

Ab soul is genuinely one of my favorite rapper guys like him steez and Earl are really molded me and how I see the world and I'm genuinely grateful for him
Same 47
Ab-Soul is GOATED in my circle 🙏🏾
I agree he definitely should have a bigger shine. The reason for that not happening lies both in Soul & TDE.
Nonetheless, the albums & mixtapes are still out there & regardless of (poor) marketing, they exist! In their pure form.
So really, it’s about reach (which is a big thing). But his music is still GOATED.
Earl... lol
@@bryantburn8191 hy whats wrong with earl lol
@@Tysonardatd dudes a hypocrite
Ab Soul is a great Lyricist. Wordplay is amazing
He’s showed insane loyalty to TDE, and Punch has showed his support, since he’s featured on every Ab-Soul record. However it’s obvious they care more about pushing out SZA, Isaiah Rashad and even Jay Rock and Schoolboy rather than Soulo. He’s easily my favourite of the TDE camp, and Punch Cleary respects him, but he knows that Ab-Soul ain’t for the mainstream. If Ab-Soul can accept that himself, I believe we will truly see his full creativity unleashed.
Naw mane. They don't care about pushing any of the artists out. Look at the gaps between releases. It's ridiculous as hell. 4-5 between album releases when the artist wants their music heard? Yeah punch and top are lame as fuck for holding these guys back like he has. "It's all about timing". The hell if it is. Majority of the underground rappers I listen to can drop 3-4 albums in one calendar year and get great reception from their core fanbase. Each album having space between them, gives each one its' own space to be appreciated. Whole record labels make these artists drop one album a year. Look at cardi b lame ass. People still thinking she's good but her last album was 2018. The same rapper who tried to brag about dropping 2 mixtapes in 6 months. It's not impressive, Curren$y dropped a project each month in 2016 and never bragged about it.
@@HoodieOuttaTokyoBro, I literally had to stop adding Spitta’s music to my library for a few months because he dropped so much 😂.
Top and Punch are some talentless scrubs.
@@nikeguy2 lmao mane I'm sayin. From 2014 to 2018 was some crazy drops. All EPs and albums, no mixtapes. Remember last year when he miscalculated the drop window for the end of the year? 😭
@@HoodieOuttaTokyo Hell ya 😂 he lowkey sitting on another Alchemist album too. I remember back when bro was dropping tapes, this man went like 2-3 years and dropped work every single month with his albums and tapes.
He singlehandedly kept DatPiff online 😂.
It’s crazy to say any artist had failed when they millions have listened to their music or heard a verse. Remember when Kendrick was saying he just wanted to be heard
And boy did we listen
But when you being compared to or downright being said you better than the best rapper in the world. I can see the frustration
@@ulthuncho7123 yeah but abs big failure is not being consistent enough. In his content. But knowing his life I can’t say I blame him. But you also have to strike when the iron is hot. His first album is fire. But then he when through losing his soul mate and it showed in them music. Control system vs these days is night and day. It’s a shame tho because he still makes fire music. His last album should have been talked about way more and imo it showed that TDE was not dead
@@ulthuncho7123 and also idk bar for bar he might be better than Kendrick. Iron sharpens iron
@@t-god2439 I agree completely although I’m not the biggest ab listener I believe him when he said why all his plats got Kendrick on there. Cause those are the only songs I know 😂
I just got into his music but these mf just not hungry anymore plain and simple. And the fan base DS them about them taking their time isn’t gonna help him.
@@ulthuncho7123 yeah his last album cycle was very interesting. Because I think that’s the most money I’ve ever seen out behind him. He was doing interviews left and right and even did a tiny desk show. I’m more of a TDE supporter myself. But I’d say check out control system and his last album Herbert. Imo Herbert might be his best album. Out of all his albums it’s the only one I think you actually learn about Herbert and not ab soul if that makes sense
The issue with saying TDE failed Ab,is that there aren't a lot of labels that would know what to do with Ab, especially at the time he dropped.
Bro at this point forget about being mainstream he should just be independent or sign with Kendrick's label. I hate to say it but the vast majority of mainstream listeners probably wouldn't accept his style of music cause they wouldn't understand it.
Yo saying something like "She self-deleted herself" is kind of wild you know. If I was talking about someone committing suiciding I'd never say it like that, it sounds insensitive.
i agree
RUclips TOS. Pretty sure he didn't want to use that phrase, but I assume he wants the video monetized and saying "she passed away" would remove some of the emotional gravity he was trying to express. It's obvious what the goal of this video was, I wish creators could appeal to YT or something to let this slide.
There are plenty of ways to say what happened respectfully within TOS and not sound like an internet memelord. "She took her own life" isn't TOS breaking.
@@starchilliusim pretty sure it is... otherwise more youtubers would say that
Seeing Ab-Soul live at the Smoker's Club Tour in 2014 is still the best concert I've ever been too
I was him at the 2022 for my first time and won’t ever forget it. That was before he tried off himself
When he said "jumped and took a leap of faith" I thought he meant metaphorically, but damn. He took header over a vape. That's wild.
TDE didn't FAIL with ab- soul, most ppl just aren't in tune with their souls to hear what the man is saying, personally I think he is one of the most underrated lyricists of all time I love soulo
If tde didn't fail him you wouldn't think he is underrated
the reason he wasnt commercially big is because hes the only one who wasnt on a major record label. TDE is not a major, they have to do all the supporting of soulo. The rest are on interscope, big label. TDE is what made kendrick great, not the machine behind the commercial sucess. That is interscope, and for SZA it would also be RCA. All things considered the type of shit ab soul makes, its impressive the heights he reached.
on top of that, his album format has never changed like other tde members. Hes stayed with the long album format of the others. These days was also a miss, which was a pivotal moment of his career.
All FACTS.

Bro I appreciate this video so much 💯🧨
They both use word play and use it well. If you’ve heard HOC by Kendrick, and you know Soulo flow you can literally hear Ab-Soul rapping the song. If it wasn’t about NOT smoking weed I would’ve thought he wrote it.
They’re both immensely digestible. They both use word play and similes so effortlessly is takes a second listen, then a third. The bars were already fire on the first listen. You didn’t know you missed anything. It’s not an issue, but a difference.
The difference is Ab-Soul is NOT on a major. The rest of the veterans are(Q,Rock,Dot). Soul is the only one signed solely by TDE. Kendrick did not pop until he released his album through Interscope and Aftermath. That’s your exposure, interview, radio play, feature, promo, and tour money right there.
It’s like D-league vs NBA money. An independent label could never push an artist like a major label can.
true
Don’t forget why he was pick up.
He drop section 80 which probably could have.. actually no it would have gone number 1 had he been already promoted by dr Dre and co
Solid takes, great editing, narration, transitions, narrative build-up, etc. Great video all around man. And I still see Ab-Soul as the lyrical miracle of the millennial generation. So glad he survived that fall.
You have great commentary. The writing and editing is top notch too. His last album was amazing, this video made me want to listen again. I’d like to see you do a video connecting the deaths in hip hop to something deeper, I would suggest that the deaths are currency for alchemy, or the deals they make in exchange for fame. Notice that almost every successful artist has a death of someone close to them. The longer they are in the game (movies and music and beyond) the more it happens. Even Obama lost someone right before he was elected. That would cause heavy depression like ab soul spoke of too. They all leave hints. To be honest, unfortunately, I don’t see ab soul becoming more successful, I feel like tho he hasn’t reached his peak musically, people don’t care like they used to. He would have to make people care. I love your content bro.

Ab soul neglected the mainstream but wants mainstream accolades cmon bro its not always what you say its how u say it. Nothing about ab soul made the masses pay attention. Rappers like ab soul have to understand u have to put the medicine in the candy sometimes to make people digest. J. COLE undertood that and so did Kendrick. Kendrick gave us TPAB but understood he had to give us "alright" and the lighter hearted songs with it. If soul brother 2 wouldve done that he wouldve won
Big Facts
This is sad to hear I love Soul, he has so much good music and I wish people came around to him. Lyrically I think he is on par with Kendrick, I just think kendrick is more digestible in a way that suits people who aren't into super lyrical masterpieces. I dont know how to describe it, but it's like lately people prefer big thoughts conveyed in few words. I hope ab-soul bounces back though, he is one of the greats in hiphop to come out from just over the last decade. Sometimes it's the artist just doesn't fall in the right place at the right time with the right topics and the right audience. Man now I wanna binge listen to soul and look into his latest, I been listening to other genres a lot.
Yess, try his latest offer 'Herbet'. It's really worth it
People want the thinking done for them instead of doing the thinking for themselves. Simple.
she self deleted herself - nice to see you show compassion for someone's real loss that affected them deeply.
Bro just doesnt have mainstream appeal simple as that.
Black hippy was the way to reach the top but they was too impatient. They rap best when they rap together and that's facts
I admit I had to get used to AB Soul, but in time he grew on me as an underdog and I respect that position
How tf is Kendrick surface level? He is on the same depth as Ab Soul at least, if not deeper. Difference is, kendrick presents it in a easier way for the listener
Yup. 100%
Surface level no. I think ab is on equal footing with kendrick. Difference being exposure. Kendrick has ton of songs on Grammy nominated albums that are hard to digest. Ab just never got heavy backing because the label is afraid of losing money if the promotion doesn't land well. I could see him making it big I'd he got songs with pop stars and the hottest rappers too.
Yeah, Kendrick is deep. You don't have to use a lot of words or complicated theories to go deep. In fact it's arguably harder to convey complex themes in a succinct way

The title should have been named “Why TDE failed Ab-Soul”. You did Ab-Soul a huge disservice with your video.
Ehh it was a little click bait ngl. But If you watched the whole video, I don't see how you thought that it was a disservice. No one on RUclips has made a small documentary of ab like this. And I praised him all video and came up with solid points that ab soul himself pointed out
Ab soul is the GOAT and easily the best rapper from TDE
@@louaista EASILY the best? He's thr best but Put some respect on Kendrick pen game lol Kendrick isn't too far from Ab
I think the reason for Soul’s lack of popularity with mainstream was due to him staying independent. All his releases are through TDE only.
I'm wanting to hear about Aleister Crowleys devaluation of faith etc. I didn't know that AbSoul's content was deep. What are his best tracks ( rap heavy tracks)?
Go listen to Control System and Do What Thou Wilt. Both of those speak on some different esoteric / occultist themes. Control System even has Kabbalist symbolism on the cover of it
Im so glad he didn’t die, one of my favorite rappers of all time❤️
it takes alot for an artist to know they are too deep and knowing when to dumb it down without losing integrity, if you cant do that youre not marketable like ab soul
its sad ab soul feels that way because I love the philosophical, spiritual, occult rap
The Book of Soul is my favorite song from Ab-Soul. Brings me to tears every time I hear it.
She wasn’t just a woman he dated, she was actually a member of TDE and has a track with Kendrick when he was going by KDot. I got it.
Ab soul you are my favorite lyricist and rapper pro.
Let’s see if Do Better gets at least a Grammy nommy though.
Soul says everything about his life in his music, there's no need to discuss it if you listen to the rapper
I’ll have to disagree with this… this makes it seem like TDE doesn’t have the ability to break a artist… and we all know that’s not true. At the height of ab soul was control system… HE decided to break away and not embrace the success he saw with that album. His next album was soooo far from what made him to that point. He himself has said numerous times that his mind just wasn’t on being the artist he had the potential to be. He often raps about this as well with that most recently being mentioned on do better. He wants something that he himself doesn’t have the mind frame to Achieve. Schoolboy had that same mind frame and was still able to blow up to the level of success he wanted. He is one of the few artist that has had many opportunities and let them pass by.
Ab Soul is going through the same thing Wale is going through. Which is that your well respected from peers & legends in hip hop, yet you still don’t get your just due from the masses
I was about to hate on the video, coz AB is a beast , but I watched it great video 👍🏽

Ab-Soul is my favorite HipHop Artist. He is just very deep lyrical and unique and his Story and life is just very tragic but on the other hand so straight authentic.
I will always listen to Ab-Soul.
Yoo thank God he's okay, That's why his mouth looks different when he talks he had to get fake teeth damn, hope he isn't in too much pain w the leg and rib injuries
Doeburger was terribly taken from us, some low life piece of Sh*t robber shot him 6 times in an alley off 11th Street in LA in a robbery. He survived some days in the hospital terrible I hope justice is served. This is the word on the street, lightly verified by a rapper who said "Dudes will take your life to put a smile on their kids face for a day" I forget who said that, Praying for Doeburger and his family
Control system was his most cohesive album. After that his albums sonically sounded all over the place. It’s like he hears random beats and puts them all together to make a album. Instead of having beats that sound different but still have a theme or a vibe that’s consistent. Soul should work with one producer and see what he comes up with. Imagine if he put out the album with JMSN or alchemist
Finally someone says this, he’s probably my favorite rapper OAT but his discography is not up to par with his talent. DWTW and These Days had some dope songs but a lot of subpar moments and a lack of a clear direction. Plus, he’s not as consistently esoteric as many claim - a lot of his music just touches on drugs and hoes.
Wayne was rewarded with a ridiculous 4-6 year run (depending on who u ask) doing features for literally everyone. Soul needs to find poppin artists that obviously cross over well, do features with them and revive his namesake.
Unfortunately, hip-hop is a young person’s game, you gotta be intensely current to even brush the idea of relevancy to people, Soul wants to be beyond “just familiar”. If TDE isn’t it and u have to do for self, the approach gotta be different.
All this theory easy to say but he can do it
I feel like if Kendrick had taken a little time to take soulo under his wing for a little while after blowing up so big it could have really transformed soulos career. Some of my fav hip hop songs are songs that they made together before kdot blew up
This title makes me remember a vid on TDE yt channel titled "Ab-Soul is not eating"
Can’t be mad you in the shadows if you a shadowy type person
I remember a certain article from a few years back where some magazine company called J. Cole a boring rapper, during the come up, warm up mixtapes era......J. Cole was basically like Ab-Soul during that period, heavily introspective and boom-bap with the sound, he had to alter his presentation to get that mainstream appeal and accpectance ...I dont think Soul ever made that "sacrifice" his a dope Lyricist for sure, I've heard all his albums upto DO WHAT THY WILT, with tiktok now it will be almost impossible for him to get the mainstreams attention or approval
This is why I don’t believe artist when they say they don’t care about the numbers or plats. Because if you have potential to be the best more than likely you are going to try. And especially so when you have the best in your corner
Anyone else here from Ab-soul’s story?
Yupp
Ab-soul always was and always will be the best lyricists on tde. The only reason Kendrick got as good as he did is because he was lucky enough to have ab soul in the same group as him and be able to compete against him. Kendrick wasn't that good at the start he got a lot better over time and that's why.

In a world where Kendrick doesn't exist, Ab is Kendrick. Sadly he suffered because he was on the same label as Kendrick and popped at the same time as Kendrick so TDE just decided to back K Dot coz he was more digestible. It's no disrespect to anyone but K Dot represented lower risk for TDE so they threw all their resources behind him, what's sad is that by not releasing Ab and telling him to go find a label that could make him their flagship MC and back him the same way that they were backing Kendrick, TDE held him back from fulfilling his potential.
Ab-Soul is a success. Period.
He was one of the most insightful and lyrical geniuses of his time but bros music was usually depressing af and was geared towards woke younger men, which was too small of an audience to grow into mainstream. Bro had zero hits or radio singles other than maybe illuminate mostly from gta 5. Even his fellow TDE members only featured him on their more woke album tracks where they needed deep lyrics. Q or jay rock were usually reserved for those catchy radio hooks
The thing about making more slower emotional hip hop like tyler the creator is that bro was rapping about conspiracy theories instead of stuff more people could relate to. Doesnt matter how much of a genius you are, if you arent making club or at least radio tracks then no one will discover your music
Tyler the creator literally blew up off of talking about raping pregnant women and the most depressing shit with goblin on XL records until he made Odd future records, it has everything to do with the fact Ab-Soul wasn't on a major label that had the resources to push and market him like Interscope did with Kendrick or XL did with Goblin. You can blow up rapping or singing about anything if you have the right talent, contacts and investors to put you where you need to be at the right time.
Well said but they don’t hear you though
Just said the truth....the conspiracy theories won't cut it
YOU FORGOT THAT KENDRICK AND Q SIGNED TO INTERSCOPE IN 2012. SOUL STAYED TDE EXCLUSIVE. THAT PART
Ab Soul and Joey Badass at the defunct Barkley Club in Philly was one of the best shows Ive seen since seeing Mos Def/Talib Kweli live. Ab Soul was steeped in metaphysics, Futurism, and other esoteric topics your average listener has been conditioned to ignore. I dont think he was ever meant to be mainstream, like Cambatta, DOOM, 3000, Rapsody, etc.
my first exposure to ab-soul was when chance the rapper dropped smoke again on acid rap. i been a fan ever since and its such a shame he didnt blow up man
I pray Ab receives all his flowers and accolades as I see a lot of me in him. He conquered the illest rapper alive he deserves whatever he goes after next. But also Kendrick is as big as he is because of Jay Rock, he mentions he was able to step aside and let him shine. Although TDE didn’t promote his work like their other artists, he made his own name without em. After loosing mac it broke my heart listening to Herbert, I’m glad he’s back, hope he keeps swinging them axes and knocking earth off axis
Steez, Solo, Earl Sweatshirt, Butcher are rapper rappers. They werent ever going mainstream after 2016 and the ascendance of trap and emo hiphop.. Kendrick's success is an exception
I think is failure came from not being consistent with making music and performing because anything he dropped we ate it up.
AB never sold his SOUL
"self deleted" is a crazy thing to say
It's really cringe and disrespectful. He only says it so that he doesn't have to rush losing advertiser money. Very disrespectful.
Ab just rapped about a bunch of stuff I’d rather read about. This is the first album of his i thoroughly enjoyed.
Well said
It’s not TDE fault. I think there’s many other factors here. I don’t like this angle that ab soul is too “deep”. Kendrick is deep, deeper actually, he just knows how to reach the masses through his strong use of story telling, vocal inflections, etc. I also think ab soul, has been dealing with alot, and I think he may have been a little salty about Kendrick’s success at times, although he loves Kendrick. There’s a lot. You touched on a few.
I’d like to see Soul bounce back. I didn’t like most of the new project, but I always felt like he was very gifted.
I think Ab-soul and the rest of the world need to take a break from the desire to get something out of this abusive world. I think the best thing that happens in rap is for a musician to make a living without having to be a superstar. Ab-soul, Jadakiss, Sean Price, MF Doom, freddie gibbs, Roc Marciano, etc. These are outstanding artists that have excellent careers without having their names plastered everywhere. This is how rap will stay alive and flourish; having artists across the financial spectrum dedicate themselves to the craft.
Ab Soul BEEN the underground 🐐🐐🐐
Ab soul is exactly where he NEEDS to be but saddens me he wants more but thats how we are.
But Ab Soul is the best RAPPER OF ALL TIME EVER!!
The reason I love TDE. Loyalty. Even through the delays that Jay Rock, Sza and Soul experienced, they stuck to the label. What does that tell you? They're more than a family than a label. They don't show it anymore cuz they got real families now with kids. But when they were all in their 20s, TDE artists were like brothers and sisters. And it showed through so many videos that you can find on RUclips. I loved when Black Hippy were together cuz they'd just clown eachother. And when Sza first entered the label, you can tell Rock and Schoolboy watched over her like she was their little sis. Kendrick left but make no mistake, he wouldn't have left the label if it wasn't in good hands. And he still loves his TDE family and is still around. Sza the lead lady in charge now tho. Btw, can't wait for Qs album
Q is underrated as a talent
He is essentially the Lloyd Banks to Kendricks 50 sometomes being associated with a big talent and star can make it hard to break out.
That was a problem for a lot of Roc a fella artists. Ab soul just has Lupe syndrome
Opposite, absoul failed tde. They were having a winning streak 2014 sza dropped Z, Isaiah dropped cilvia demo, schoolboy q dropped oxymoron, then when it was solo turn to do a debute studio album with a major backing it, coming off of the masterpiece that is the control system, he decided to drop a social commentary in the form of an album called "these days" as in "imma make fun of the current state of hiphop & make essentially parodies of hiphop music because this is what rap sound like these days". Nobody fucked with it they gave him a 2nd chance & he dropped that mid ass project & 2016 do they shelved him & focused on there growing yet dying roster of artists they had left that can generate some buzz & money.
All you need is weed and you’ll literally understand him
Ab soul is in my top 5 dead or alive..not a day passes without me jamming his tunes
The conclusion of the video left much to be desired
U made bro look like Krusty the clown in the thumbnail
Ab-Soul said in an interview that he’s not actually signed to TDE.
His last album was released under TDE so that is confusing as hell
I love Ab-Soul so much. Didn’t fail anyone. He’s for the hip hop heads. I need a Ab-Soul and Daylyt need a collab
They never knew what the cover of his second album meant
