I had the great privilege of hearing Bjorling at his final concert in England at London's Albert Hall. His voice was as clear as a bell. Jussi died much too young.
01/01/2023. I'm 79 years old today. I've listened to this for over 60years and I've had the privilege of seeing this opera at La Scala in 2015. I can't add to everything thats already been said. Only this. Just listen
Probably one of the most recognizable voices in Opera. For me, Jussi's voice is the gold standard! What a tragedy that he died so young. His duets with Victoria de los Angeles are treasures. Many consider this version with Sir Thomas Beecham conducting the "best" recording of Boheme. Not hard to understand why....
In the mid-1950s, one of my friends spent a whole month's meagre salary, to see the final performance of La Boheme, with Jussi Bjorling and Victoria de los Angles at Covent Garden . One of my greatest regrets in life, has been not to have been able to afford to experience it too. What beautiful singing!
Jussi was the world's finest tenor and my favourite for well over 50 years. Many have come close over the last century but never equal his superb tone and control.!!!!!!!
One of my favorite quotes about Björling came from Victoria de los Angeles who said that not one of his records could prepare you for how incredibly beautiful his singing was in person. He sang with Toscanini twice, I believe, in the Verdi Requiem and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. At the first rehearsal, Björling had just finished singing the Ingemisco, and Toscanini stared at him, his mouth agape and speechless. After a moment, all he could do was shake his head in disbelief.
I brought this album home from the library out of curiosity at around the age of 12--and became an instant opera lover. I thought it was great as a kid--now I know it was!
GLIMPSE I worked on a machine in the bottom of a barn. The radio was on. A song. I put down my tools, and wept. Such beauty. Regrets? Well, some. Some things done, or not done. Yes. One. I wish, I could have seen Jussi Bjoerling sing.
I heard Victoria de Los Angeles in recital in San Francisco in the 1990's when she was very old...but still sang marvelously. I went backstage to get her autograph. What a sweet, sweet lady and Grand Dame of opera! Jussi is in my two favorite opera recordings -- EMI's "Boheme" with de Los Angeles and the 1947 Met "Romeo et Juliette" with Bidu Sayao!!
Both are vocally superb. De Los Angeles is also flawless in terms of enunciation and there is not a single word she throws away. She had the nearly lost art of "saying the phrase. " That germoglia is a thing of beauty.

In fact, among opera audience and critics he was very, very highly rated. During a period between the beginning of the 1990s and a piece in the 2000's, a lot of polls occurred "who was the greatest singer/tenor of the 1900s, etc" Björling won most of these polls in several countries. Even though it was 40 years after his career and tenors like Pavarotti and Domingo were at the forefront of fame. In summary he was absolutely superior in these polls. In a lot of literature about opera, one can read that Björling was the greatest tenor of all in a period called the Golden Age of Tenors. This was during the period when tenors were the best and competition as hardest around 1930 - 70. Björling's career as a top tenor was about 1935 to his death in 1960.

BUT HIS BARBARIAN HORNS WERE ALWAYS IN HIS PATH.
And here Vdl Angeles proves she is his female equal. Jussi makes me weep all the time, but she's the First Soprano to manage that feat! 🥰

A Voz dele num ponto supera a de qualquer outro tenor. Sua voz é Estereofônica.
His voice surpasses most lyric tenors I have heard.
I think there were three operatic tenors during the 20th century who stood out a little above all others-Caruso, Bjorling, and Pavarotti.
With all due respect, I’d have to replace Pavarotti with Corelli. 2 out of 3 was not a bad selection though….:)
