Shame on Orchestra Symphony de Montreal for canceling concerts with this marvellous artist, just because of his nationality. When and why should a young pianist has anything to do with politics? Great! He plays this with such ease. His hands remain totally relaxed, no unnecessary movement. Lots of Russian soul there. Beautiful playing. He looks a little like Shaman.
The scene of tears coming out of Malofeev's eyes at the end of the last movement is incredibly sensitive 40:03 . Malofeev is a genius! And the hr-Sinfonieorchester film director deserves an Oscar!
I'd like to share a story: after growing up with a love hate relationship with the piano (I was one of those children forced to learn an instrument growing up), Rach 2 was what brought me back into my love for classical music. I discovered it when I was around 15 yrs old and from then it became My concerto-I loved it so dearly that I could not let go of it. I was so attached that I had a very specific way that I liked it played but that changed when I happened upon Alexander's performance when he was 14 (!!!). He opened my heart and mind from my restricted view. Years later, now in my twenties, I happened upon Yuja Wang talking about Rach 3 when I suddenly felt I needed to listen to it even though for years, Rach 2 had been the only one of the 4 concertos that I loved. Luckily for me, Alex's performance above was in the suggested videos; and, having had such a good experience with when I saw his Rach 2, I immediately clicked on it. And my... how I was moved to misty eyes by his performance (very hard to do, as I cannot cry easily even when pieces move me so much my heart hurts). It may not be perfectly accurate but no other interpretation from any other pianist (including himself) makes me feel the way Alex's performance here is able to. I watched so many others after but none could compare. It is this performance of his that made me fall in love with Rach 3 and finally helped me let go of Rach 2 and move onto the bigger. I haven't been this passionate about a piece in almost a decade. That is the power of Alexander Malofeev, everyone!
If you like Rach 2 and 3, you MUST listen to the astonishing performance of Rach 1 (Krystian Zimerman soloist). You'll fall in love with tears again, I promise you. The first two movements each feature jaw-dropping cadenzas-and the 2nd movement is about the most beautiful music ever performed.
Under Alexander's hands, Rachmaninoff's masterpiece becomes a prophecy of our times. Here is every human emotion; furious rage at the madness and horrors of futile war; grief and unashamed tears for its helpless victims; despair that such evil should dishonour a country so loved. But here too are dreams of home and longing for loved ones and memories of laughter and smiling faces. Then, breaking through, again and again, is a rising crescendo of determination and hopefulness, heralding a bright and peaceful, joyous future. Alexander, you have bared your soul for us in this piece - and we are with you, brother.
@@mariaceciliacarrenocanas7710 Sadly, but courageously and at a bitter personal cost, Alexander has raised his voice in the defence of a people fighting - equally courageously - for its survival. If longing for a just and peaceful ending to this totally unprovoked invasion of a sovereign state is partisan, then so be it. I'm too old (83 this month) to be a social media person, but I can access You Tube, and look forward to Alexander's next musical offering - and hope it won't be long in coming!
When an artist with this technical accuracy competence and flair, tells you something new about a piece with which you have lived for over 45 years, then you know you are witnessing the performance of a maestro. It is not simply that this is a bravura performance, it is. But the nuance, subtlety, shades, variation in tempi, the brilliance of articulation, the lyricism, the sparkling right and left hands, the passion, musicality and the respect for the instrument, obtaining whatever level of volume he requires without being in danger of damaging the piano (unlike another more senior Russian pianist whose allure is as big a mystery as the sex of the Loch Ness Monster) are breathtaking And yet he proves his artistry is on another level - injecting new ideas, new thoughts and evoking novel emotions and appreciation in the listener. This was the greatness of Horowitz. And here that spirit is given life again - One could cite very many examples in the first movement - but, for me, the almost catalcysmic cascade which introduces the second movement before resolution to that beautiful lyrical theme - only to be followed by more articulated darkness again resolved to lyric beauty - is picked out with extraordinary artistic vision. Open mouthed in awe and appreciation.
@@raffigorski6850 yes indeed I am. But probably the greatest live video of this concerto is Horowitz Mehta. There too you will find all kinds of error. Horowitz rejoiced in these as this is what live music making is all about. And he was right (even when he was wrong!)
I thoroughly enjoyed a great performance as did most people who commented on it. For those who did not, as they say in the Highlands of New Guinea , “ Problem belong them”.
I’ve heard and seen what I thought were the finest performances of this piece, but young Malofeev is another level entirely. Impeccable technique, marvelous phrasing, unbelievable energy and transcendent delicateness, and the passion only a Russian can have for this music. Rarely does this warhorse bring me to tears, but Malofeev did just that at several points, no more so than the magnificent restatement of the soaring theme in the coda. I hope to hear him live some day.

I saw Cliburn play at Tanglewood, and the feelings I felt with his performance is the same (if not better) than what I feel when Alexander caresses the piano keys…
I and my wife visited this concert with hr-Sinfonieorchester Piano: Alexander Malofeev ∙and conductor : Alain Altinoglu. Alexander Malofeev played instead of Evgeny Kissin who was sick. Alexander Malofeev is a great pianist!!

This is the most beautiful Rach no. 3 that I have ever heard. Bare none. The technical demands of the piece fall off Alexander with ease. But where he really excels is in the interpretive. The story he lays out from beginning to end is a compelling unified whole. He plays the finale exquisitely so that the one note climax is the true pinnacle of the piece. Just amazing.

Great to watch a current performance by this young giant of the piano. He has a unique way with Rachmaninov that I personally enjoy. He combines amazing technique, a great sense of of the scope of the music, and a rare ability to be aggressive and delicate at the right times.
I get it, those who said erratic or pace issues, comparing to Lim's performance it's not as technical perfect rendering, the symphony also supports him big times. But man, there's something about this one that moves you for reasons you don't understand. If I just let the music goes in the background without paying attention of who's playing it still always gets me, everytime .
Even the great Horowitz has technical issues with this enormous opus, there is a live recording here on YT were the finale is a bit messed up. I personally don’t care. You are so right, thank you for your insightful comment. I prefer concerts that are played with full passion to the robotic performances of some (particularly Asian) artists
There are huge number of recordings of this concerto -- This is the best. Alexander gave everything, he expressed Rachmaninoff's Music in a fascinating way full of color, technique and virtuosity. He generates an incredible energy in the faster passages Alternately, the softer passages show a tender, vulnerable side that most pianists do not achieve. His cadenza is full of confident, powerful, yet humble pianism. It was in the slow movement that he showed stunning poetic feeling wedded with an awe-inspiring virtuosity. What most impressed me is his incredible ability to play intensely and elegantly. Alexander's maturity, sense of phrasing, balance, and direction are out of this world, playing like this at such a young age it's just amazing. Bravoo Alexander
there really isn't that many recordings of this concerto lol this piece is widely considered the hardest piece to play on piano implying that this piece would have the least amount of recordings compared to any other piece.

Оркестр очень, очень приятен, весьма хорош! Спасибо дирижеру и оркестру! Александру спасибо за труд! Мне неблизка эта трактовка концерта, но спасибо, что Александр в принципе есть😊❤
Shame on Orchestra Symphony de Montreal for canceling concerts with this marvellous artist, just because of his nationality. When and why should a young pianist has anything to do with politics? It's already unimaginably difficult to make a career in classical music nowadays and they literally don't make enough compared with how difficult the job is. I wish I could have the pleasure of listening to him live one day.
I absolutely agree. Music and the arts are rather a way to bring unity and love. Why is war worshiped?
Ukraine has had no benefit from its war.
@juliesheard2122 ___ ask Putin.
The war is a reason that he now lives in Berlin. His relatives live in Ukraine

@@jeffreyanderson1851 I am happy to hear he's being kept safe. He's a treasure for world to enjoy and find such peace and happiness...I do each and every time he performs. God protect bless you Dearest Alexander.
This rendition is brilliant: simple but powerful and sincere and sophisticated. It's nearly 2 in the night but I couldn't stop until the end. It was like breathing with you. Thank you!!
And he is just 21 years old, what a gift to humanity.
A pure prodigy
Only 20 at this performance on Sept 15, 2022. He turned 21 on Oct 21, 2022.

he has some unbelievably good performances in his teen and pre-teen years. Go check them, if you haven't. The Grieg concerto, the Saint-Saent 2nd, random etudes in his pre-teens... Amazing stuff.
He is one of *___theee___* masters of all classes and worlds --- so for example *_he_* should be the next overall world leader after Putin, Selenski, Biden, Netanjahu and and and !!
I must admit I have not heard it played like this ❤❤❤❤
Absolutely beautiful!! Incredible! Standing ovation!! Huge BRAVO to Alexander Malofeev, and to director and wonderful orchestra!
That guy at the end with the loud immediate “bravo” echoes what we all think 👏🏻🥃
Rachmaninov’s love child. Genius!

I thought Lugansky was the best Rachmaninoff interpreter these times, but I was wrong. This guy is incredible.
Yun chan lim
Malofeev and Yunchan from the new generation. But still Mikhail Pletnev is the last postromantic since Horowitz died.
They are both equally good and I've hoped for a long time to see a duo of them both.
Did you hear Valentina Lisitsa?
@@grigorygusev2191 of course I heard. Not the best one, in my view. Lisitsa’s interpretations are far for academical, unfortunately.
Undoubtedly, Alexander is the embodiment of real "Rachmaninov". This performance is the best Piano concerto No. 3 I've ever heard. The sweat or tears that flow around 40:00 must be the catharsis of satisfaction of a successful performance. A state beyond art!
You can see pure jou!
Tears rolling down Alexander’s cheeks at 40.00 are pure joy at Rachmaninoff’s music when at the finale, the music turns to triumph and joy! What a composer! What a pianist!
Very intriguing. I already feel that way about ruclips.net/video/SCHg9tup9NA/видео.html&si=1r-T7yxz0FE2V-BO. Now looking forward to this one.
@mcd1722 i never noticed that until now. truly the cherry on top.
Take the genius of Rachmaninoff's music and the phenomenal performance by this young man, and magic is bound to happen... and it did, big time. The finale had me smiling and tears in my eyes at the same time. Bravo Alexander, bravo!
40:01 A few tears! One cannot imagine what all this young man has been through in the past several months. He's not only performed at many venues all around the world but he is away from his home country, now living in Germany, away from his beloved family and close friends for many months, and most likely has no idea when he'll see them again. Yet, he gives us an absolutely fantastic performance of the Rach 3. Thank you, Alexander, and thank you to this wonderful orchestra and conductor, and thank you for sharing it with the world.

I ca see it in Sasha’s face and tears come to my eyes. Please God protect him.
One can only imagine the strong feelings coursing through Sasha - now that he’s separated from his loved ones - while playing his beloved Rachmaninoff❤️
And I think those feelings DO show
Why is he estranged in Germany?
What a joy to see this man growing up before my very eyes and getting better and better
So emotional!
maybe it's sweat
Absolutely superb ❤❤❤ his interpretation is great 👍 😊
I'd like to share a story: after growing up with a love hate relationship with the piano (I was one of those children forced to learn an instrument growing up), Rach 2 was what brought me back into my love for classical music. That is the power of Alexander Malofeev, everyone!
...ich sage nur Kissin und Trifonov sind die Auserwählten!!!!!!
Простите, сударыня, но Вам неизвестен Rach 3: с пианистом Евгением Могилевским и дирижёром Кириллом Кондрашиным.
Согласна с Вами. Мысль о пророчестве пронзила мне душу.
nothing more to say...
Sacha is an artistic soul. You are a partisan and biased individual projecting your own prejudices and fears.
Can you specify what you mean by artistic soul?
Are you aware that he is often out of sync with the orchestra in the last movement? And he altered various chords and octaves in the 3rd movement.
@@raffigorski6850 yes indeed I am. But probably the greatest live video of this concerto is Horowitz Mehta. There too you will find all kinds of error. Horowitz rejoiced in these as this is what live music making is all about. And he was right (even when he was wrong!)
@@raffigorski6850 Always looking for the flyshit in the pepper!
I agree!! This Rach 3 is above all others. You speak for me.
your absolutely right Sir...! word for word....
At the end of the piece, Alexander had tears in his eyes. I am VERY fortunate to see him in March, 2023 -- Front row center.
@@gerrylewinson9918 I just bought tickets to his performance in San Francisco on March 22, 2023 ... Alexander Malofeev is a great pianist!!
Malofeev is clearly the better musician! I think Kissin was great as a teenager but not so much today.
Yes, thank you for mentioning this!! And Alexander had less than 24 hours to travel to Frankfurt from another country and prepare for the concert. He is amazing 🤩
Wonderful execution! A clear, intense and mellow sound at the same time. Malofeev is a great pianist!

Alexander is fantastic. I just love this orchestra too.

Maybe it’s rather passion not aggression as his intention
I get it, those who said erratic or pace issues, comparing to Lim's performance it's not as technical perfect rendering, the symphony also supports him big times. But man, there's something about this one that moves you for reasons you don't understand. If I just let the music goes in the background without paying attention of who's playing it still always gets me, everytime
.
His performance is from the heart..looking the smiles from the orchestra and audience and listen to him sublime encore piece
Technically is as perfect as it is possible or even impossible.
Rachmaninoff would be extremely happy & proud his work is performed so masterly. Even better than the master himself!
The orchestra is absolutely incredible.
"A tender vulnerable side that most pianists do not achieve". And this is exactly what, I believe, separates him from the rest.
