Take note that Mr. Cobham was close to 70 years old when this video was made. His temporal precision is just about as good as it was when he was with Miles or Horace. Simply amazing. One of the great drummers, and probably the greatest power hitter ever.
Indeed Cobham has the knack for digging up very gifted but not always very well- known musicians. In this regard and like someone else mentions above there is a lot in common between Cobham and Frank Zappa.
Mr. Cobham is a legend. I had the pleasure of seeing him in 1975 with Weather Report in Phoenix at the Celebrity Theater (rotating stage), and in Tucson in 1979. 👍

How can RUclips stop a song, I mean, actually interrupt an artist's song with a commercial? I can see in between songs, if you must, but interrupt a song?
It grabbed your attention didn't it. That's the whole point of the affair. It's rude and obnoxious on purpose and I hate it just as much as you, but even Google has bills to pay for youtube's huge appetite for bandwidth which is like 6 times that of subscription-financed music-only streamers. Like they say, no free lunch. Some pay with cash, we pay with being buggered. But in all fairness I have to admit that youtube is comparatively reasonable in this matter. They have plenty of videos of whole concerts without a single interruption, and to use a ballpark guesstimate I'd say that only about one song in 8 or 9 gets split with ads. Most are broadcast in between songs.
My Spanish is poor Cali style but Tommy's not in this I think. But I love him as well and he did play with Billy and Stanley as I remember at one time. I think this is Stanley Clarke, Larry Carlton, Billy Cobham, Najee and Deron Johnson Live at the Greek?
Zappa knew Cobham personally through George Duke. Who knows, Zappa may have heard a "preview" of this version before he passed. In any case he certainly knew the song. Back in the early 80's I saw Zappa perform and he had incorporated a few excerpts from Stratus in one of those completely absurd, freakishly weird, yet divine quasi-impros whoever has seen him on stage will remember well. I was 18 at the time and didn't have a clue what Stratus was, to those of my generation Billy Cobham was Mahavishnu stuff and thus outdated. It's only about a decade later that I heard Stratus on MTV that I instantly recognized that was the song parts which Zappa had played in concert. And oh, I don't think Cobham is outdated anymore.
@Bert Butler Yeah they put Jazz-Rock under the umbrella term "Fusion" now and it's more popular than ever. Fusion used to be a lot more about jazz than rock but guys like Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton and Marcus Miller to name but a few have become much funkier with age. Suits me just fine.
It's a great new version with a great band, but if you were raised with George and all the others....... I mean I'm always comparing with the first version - - - no way it's different but same....???
Pretty good but needed Edgar Winter on the keyboards when this song was recorded originally, would have become as big a hit almost as Frankenstein although it is somewhat one dimensional
Excellent. Billy is the star, who the hell cares about the guitar players fingers!?! Where's the end? Ruined by crappy editing. Hey, let's show very camera angle for two seconds! :(

Billy is still on top of his game. What a great band!!! thanks billy!!!

What a beautiful video of a terrific band. I count being able to present him and this band at our Opera House as one of the great honors of my life.

MASTERDRUMMER
Frank Zappa would have enjoyed this very much.

I forgot the first one who played the keyboards was JAN HAMMER!

Muito bom !
💪❤
🏖🎧🎹🎼🥁
oh yeãhhh
Buena versión del clásico Stratus. lógicamente me quedo con la original con el gran Tommy Bolin
The tempo on this version is a little slower than on other performances but still stellar....
"JAZZ!MUSIC! LEGEND" (BC)! THE! (JAZZ!MAN)! *MIKE! SPENCE!
It's a great new version with a great band, but if you were raised with George and all the others....... I mean I'm always comparing with the first version - - - no way it's different but same....???
yeah.. but don't you think the keys are very good in this version even though it comes from a nord stage... i did like like the rhodes very much...
Why should it be the same? Frank Zappa: “A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open.”
the first version was Jan Hammer, who did a nice job ... does sound a lot like George Duke
That’s Bass
buebiimo
Who is the fiddler, man?
Watch it again and pay attention at the end when Cobham introduces every member of his band using their full name.
Bonjour
Why did you fade the best part out? :(
Jan Akkerman !!
Que instrumento es ese? La media esfera con huecos? wow :)
Arq. Dian Se llama un tambor de acero o "steel drum"...
Arq. Dian Yes, steel drum, traditional instruments of the Caribbean islands made with welded barrels.
muchas gracias por la información.
+Arq. Dian It is actually called steelpan
Gracias
Pretty good but needed Edgar Winter on the keyboards when this song was recorded originally, would have become as big a hit almost as Frankenstein although it is somewhat one dimensional
🤐
where is the groove ? first part he sleeps, second part he is on speed!
You're having trouble finding the groove? It's certainly there
Never mind - it's not Stanley Clark Meh
Is there any evidence, this person really stems from the planet earth?
Am i the only one who fucking despises the steel drums?
Massive Attack n’en a pas samplé un extrait pour rien ;-)
Vu au parc floral 2€ Mon batteur préféré avec Bonham et Takpoum!!
great playing. the song is a bit dodgy, though.
thumbs down for cutting out his solo
Excellent. Billy is the star, who the hell cares about the guitar players fingers!?!

Love Billy, but not the greatest version i've ever heard
no drive - more lazy ass..
What the? Steal drums!! Billy, Noooooooo….
