Thanks. I'm a designer interested in learning After Effects to do small stuff, primarily for social media. The other reviews I've seen are all from hardcore animators who led me to almost give up trying this on my current 16GB M1 Mac mini setup. But your comparison was grounded and I love how you detailed how you use it and what kind of work might not get the same results. This is really helpful. Now I'm going to dive in!

Excellent thank you. I work for a design agency and about 70% of my day is spent in AE, with the rest in Premiere Pro, Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign etc.
I'm currently equipped with a 27" iMac i5 which doesn't cut the mustard (I'm the first motion designer they've ever had).
My boss has told me to go away and tell which what laptop he should buy me (no budget given) as he wants me to a have a capable machine but I also have to present to clients so I have to have a laptop.
This is the first video that has matched my usage case in AE with the exact information I needed. It so hard to know with AE particularly since currently is doesn't rely multiple cores etc.
Mind blowing the performance of the M1, credit where it's due!
I want to switch from pc to laptop..what do you think which laptop will be budgeted and good for after effect
@@ShubhamSharma-ig1pt That's a tough one as it really depends on how much you use AE Vs any other software.
If you're looking solely at AE I would focus on Ram (at least 16gb more if possible) and the CPU. AE now supports multiple cores but still doesn't really use a GPU much. Get a fast SSD too and you'll be set.
I've run it on laptops for years, and never had any real problems other than rendering time limitations.
I'm really tempted to shift from Ryzen 9 to M1 Max. Will you be doing a review for M1 Max too? I'm too concerned about the performance in Ae/motion graphics.

Hey Brother - Questions for you. I hope you can help. I'm still lost even after watching this. Here is my situation. I need an Apple computer for editing short movie style trailers. (1 to 5 minutes in total length) I'll plan on using a lot of templates and effects from Motion Array. I won't be building any 3D modeling. I'm not that advanced. I just got the Adobe suite for my 1st time this month. My budget is around $2K give or take. I don't travel, so I don't need a laptop if something else would be better. I'm looking for something that will be good for at least 2 years, when I'll upgrade. I currently have a IMac 27-inch, Late 2013, with an outdated operating system (macOS Catalina). I love the screen size, so I don't know if this will be helpful to just use the screen somehow with a new computer? Hoping you or someone can please help. - Thanks.

Hey mate, great video. I use After Effect a tone in my videos so i have been really looking around to see if it's worth buying the Mac Mini with the M1. I was thinking of getting the 16gig option. Do you think it will handle what we do? I also do a bunch of editing in premier.
Premiere performance is awesome if you're editing a less compressed format such as Prores, but it has some kinda crappy performance editing footage from my Sony FX3, but so does my i9 Macbook haha. With that said, I'm pretty confident Premiere will get a massive boost when Adobe releases a version native for the M1. I'm doing a video soon to test editing performance with the beta version of Premiere!
Resolve runs great on M1… AE might be better when native…

I rendered a pretty heavy after effects 2021 project file on a m1 8gb macbook air and compared with my macbook pro 16" i9 9980hk and a imac 27" 2015 i5 12gb and got the following results:
9:36m macbook 16" i9 9960hk 5500m 8gb 64gb ram
22:03m macbook air m1 8gb ram
33:52m imac 2015 i5 12gb ram
I was hoping the m1 would get closer or surpass the 16" i9, but it was very slow in comparison in this test.. Will test the render again using the After Effects 2022 M1 Optimized Beta when I can

So I want to get a MacBook as my only computer because of its portability and no matter what I’m gonna get a MacBook so if there are some things that aren’t optimized for m1 should I just get the MacBook Pro and not wait for the new one since the new one will be more expensive and even with the performance boost it may be a waste of money?

Duik problem is very strange one considering it's less of a plugin and more of a collection of expressions. Maybe AE emulates Java somehow to execute scripts and because of emulation inside emulation overall speed drops so much?

Hi bro, I render a lot in cinema 4d and while rendering scenes is the only way I can get the fan to turn on, it never got hot. You can always keep in in you lap and it's not hot on your palms.
I always hated Macbooks for their thermal performance, but the M1 Macbook pro is literally the "coolest" laptop i've ever had by miles.
@@M.V.P. does the M1 work well with cinema, I want to work in graphics but I’m getting the M1 13in because the price is really good, does cinema work well?
@@pumpkinaeaIt works like a charm for me, even when doing somewhat complex 3d scenes + animations. If youre working more with adobe suite, you don't have to worry at all.
All necessary programs run at the same time and i dont rlly bother closing them ( except when the scenes I render get quite complex).
Easily best laptop I've ever used hands down. 👌
@@pumpkinaea it's easily enough for what all the cinema classes throw at me and all the extra abuse i subject it too.
Only real issue i've ever had was when i rendered a complex scene in emulated keyshot 9. That was a real pain. Worked well in cinema 4d though👍

Is Apple fix this (After Effect) issue of M1 through the Optimization process? I'm Planning to Buy a Mac mini M1 16 Gb
I wouldn't count on optimization on Apple's end, but Adobe is currently working on After Effects for the M1. If you're not a big plugin user I'd say buy that Mac Mini!

If you're just starting out, the M1 is still a pretty good option, but I personally also own the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and that laptop is a beast in After Effects!

Can't compare the two. 5-6 times more powerful the m1

@@Johnkent1965 Thanks for this answer. But do you actually use them. I mean I do lots of footage stabilisation in PP and plenty of tittle sequences in AE. Now a 40 min export in PP takes around 16 hrs. Do you really think an M1 mac would ease my work?

Absolutely! In relation to After Effects the M1 and 16" i9 are very comparable.

It's basically exactly the same. The performance and hardware of the M1 Macbook and Mac mini are as close as you can get, so there is no difference. Maybe you'll get a percent or two more performance out of the mini (might have marginally better cooling), but thats it✌🏻

Nope, it's as smooth as it could possibly be! I do notice the occasional glitch of the UI flashing in and out, but if very brief and infrequent.

The performance is pretty much the exact same, but the pro will have a bit more endurance due to the fact that it has a fan to prevent thermal throttling.

RAM preview took ~9s to drop frames and render time was 13:12. I have an i7 7700, GTX 960 and 64GB of RAM. D:

Tested on 32 gb 2018 i9 mbp. 10 minutes 38 seconds. Was hoping for speed jump, but it's just not there.

Not a heavy motion graphic like yours but capable to edit video (off-line and simple colorgrading) and some 2ds animation. Now between 2 choices, buying a Windows gaming laptop or Macbook 2019 minimum for longterm workstations. I hope you can make more content about this, thank you 🙏
