The reason why there’s enamel on the back of the links is that you need a “counter enamel” to keep from having problems where the primary enamel on the other side will crack and flake off and/or warp the piece.

James gave a collar to the Wachopes at Niddrie Merschal, but it was a thistle then a flag of St. Andrew alternating around. It was divided up and I saw about 4 links of it as a kid.
