The other benefit a lightsaber has over a normal sword is you don’t need to worry at all about edge alignment, making spinning even that much more effective. The downside is you need to control the blades much more to keep them away from your torso, so give and take. When you factor all that in I think how maul uses his double bladed lightsaber makes a lot of sense. Good video, the double bladed lightsaber has always been my favorite science fiction weapon!
If you use a lightsaber, you would most likely spend allot of effort to not burn yourself
@Urazz if your fast as fuck boy, then advantage lmao
@Urazz speed is the primary goal in regular swordfighting. your power mostly comes from rotational force vs flat strength of the user. Same goes for lightsabers, sure you dont need the force to deal damage but you will need it when you get into a bind with another saber user.
Given that this channel goes into practical concerns, it could also be that there's some benefit to having the two blades of the lightsaber connected (or even just have one really long blade that the handle covers up).
I have no idea what the proper explanation for how a lightsaber works is, but Darth Mauls saber might be more than just two lightsabers strapped together.
And you talk about this like the lightsaber is an actual thing. Wtf.

Interestingly, the stuff that makes this an impractical sword makes it a pretty practical lightsaber
Yeah. Most people who go "they wouldn't fight like that" and "that's just not how it would be done" clearly have never wielded the Force or a blade that can cut through steel like butter.
The Great Dear Leader Jim Pickens *Praise the dear leader!!!*
Not to mention you can adopt different fighting styles. Single bladed, long aword, stafe etc.
Darth Mauls double sabre is presented in, what appears to be, a much more practical application with a much longer hilt and shorter blades.
@@ARC-Sev This is exactly what I've been thinking, especially if we're talking a splitsaber (saberstaff which splits in-two), you would have an incredibly variable weapon; a saberstaff, a single-bladed lightsaber with an extended hilt, a sudden switch to dual wielding or individual standard lightsabers (and if we're talking variation, a adding a dual-phase component like Vader's which can change the length of the blade mid-combat would revolutionize this kind of weapon - imagine facing off against a saberstaff and then suddenly your opponent is dual-wielding a shoto and standard lightsaber)

as a person from the lightsaber community: double-blades are excellent for offense (you constantly parry all the time) but is horrible for defense. your hilt is the biggest gap in your defense.
True but also somewhat not. I've also done a bit of dueling with a double-bladed saber, and while the larger hilt is an opening it's only really exploitable if you're not spacing yourself properly. A double-bladed saber or for that matter any exotic saber type with a longer hilt needs different spacing from a conventional saber. My particular double-bladed saber benefits from a good half a meter of extra distance, and my pike benefits from the full meter.
Leverage and positioning. Though, I prefer a good offense for my defense with my double saber
Matsubayashi Ryu, Senpai at 15, real Bo Staff experience. They are very good for defense if you really are trying to hurt your opponent. First you have to get past my offence, then my defense, and if your really fighting it definitely does work. What he's holding though is too big for him.. I'm 6'4" so I use a 6' Bo Staff, 2inch thick Doweling. He looks to be about 5'8" so I would have him use a 5'6" inch Bo..
@@JaybayJay
Problem is that a Bo staff doesn't directly translate to a double-ended weapon with only a small grip area. With a Bo you have a full range of motion with your hand placement along the entire length of the staff. Quite a bit still does carry over, though, it's just not a direct one-to-one.
@@VestedUTuber Oh, trust me.. Give me a well balance double bladed sword and some fruits are definitely getting Ninija'd!!! @@nonautemrexchristus5637 well he does watch a lot of history channel
One thing to note, is that Ray Park treated the double bladed lightsaber more closely to a bowstaff and not a sword. Also, the blades he utilized on the lightsaber were closer to a 28 inch blade vs the standard 36 inch of a single blade saber. Also, he had no cross guards due to it being more of a bowstaff type weapon
The word is "bo staff", though your points are good.
Yeah but the only reason that actually worked is because lightsabers don’t need any measure of power to cut through an opponent. In the real world I’m not sure the bo staff treatment would work since swords need force behind the swings so the light saber fighting styles wouldn’t all be as viable.

I kinda think that this weapon fulfills the niche of a bodyguard's weapon, kinda like the greatsword and great-axe. Impractical for the individual to carry, not overall useful in a battlefield scenario, but capable of holding off multiple attackers in such a manner that a single person can hold a choke point[s] long enough for the important party to retreat/reform ranks. Kind of like how the huskarl held off an entire army at the battle of Stanford Bridge with a great-axe.
Kinda like the nagamaki, which was a Japanese polearm/sword hybrid also famously used by bodyguard retainers.
That kind of makes sense, since the Jedi Temple Guards favored this weapon
On the other hand if the room is not wide or tall enough - you are boned.
@@stevenqu3 fun fact: the temple guard pike is around 3' in length. in various artworks and tv moments, we see that the blade length can match the hilt length. so if they only have one side activated, it can act like a nagamaki. though having the blades shorter would be better when in double bladed mode so it doesn't become too unwieldy. the short blade variant can be seen in Ryan Valle's artwork of a Jedi Temple Guard for the FFG Force and Destiny RPG.
that is a great piont
If I were to make a Twinblade based on using Shad's double-longsword prop as a point of reference:
- Lengthen the handle grip by two hand lengths, and shorten the blades by an equal amount. (Same total length.)
- Using custom made pommels that latch to each other, and can be held together with a double-pronged metal pin for stability.
This way, you have two separate long-grip arming swords that can be sheathed on your waist belt for ease of transport. In a sudden attack, you can draw one of the blades to use immediately, or if you have time you can connect the two blades to make the twinblade.
Reminds me of Groh in Soul Calibur 6.
I like to imagine this is how the knight tried selling the double bladed sword to the king.

Every downside you listed can be countered by making it a lightsaber.
Exactly my thoughts too! Lightsabers are indeed technically swords, but they don't have the same physics or rules as normal physical blades do.
MrSlipperHat Yeah, lightsaber blades being essentially weightless is quite a big advantage. And there’s no need for edge alignment, considering all lightsabers are just very very hot sticks (except the black lightsaber, which actually has an edge).
But while they share different physics, they do share similar combat potential. The Darth Maul grip will still be less effective because of the different options it brings. Yeah, both styles could be swapped mid-combat but individually it makes more sense to use the weapon primarily like a polearm. :)
@@Senordisastermaster I personally would want a light pike, or even better, a lightsaber with a telescoping handle, or staff attachment. It would give me some extra reach, and if I got my hands on a lightsaber blocking metal, still work for parries and be more effective for non-lethal strikes.
@@Senordisastermaster The thing is, Darth Maul's way of handling it would be the only "safe" way of using the weapon :
Lightsaber weapons have no guards to prevent your hands to touch the blade AND if you are to hold it like Shad in this video, you'd have 1 of the plasma blade right under your shoulder, and without weight to the blade you could easily cut off your own arm by mistake, as you'd have no sensation of WHERE your blade is.

LittleRedRhuari RRR jedi and sith have, to a varying degree, the ability to sense the future. Because if this, they would likely be masters of bluffing - exposing themselves deliberately with the intention of countering the strike to the exposed area. When you take into account the years of combat training, fast reflexes and the ability to sense the future, it would be an act of suicide to strike at an already exposed area of the opponent. Instead, it would make more sense to strike at the opponents blade with the intention of creating an opening yourself, as your opponent would not anticipate this and would be much less likely to counter the strike. To emphasise the importance of anticipation and surprise in a lightsaber duel, you only have to look at how Darth Maul died. He attempted to strike obi wan with the same pummel strike he used to kill Qui-Gon, and because this strike was so predictable, obi was was able to perfectly counter his strike and killed Darth maul.

You should read Darth Bane: Path of Destruction. There's a section in the book that dives a little bit into lightsaber combat, & explains a little bit about why some of the sith used the double bladed lightsaber.
This is a rough explanation since I haven't read the book in a while, but it basically says that fighting with a double bladed lightsaber is both harder to learn & far deadlier to an inexperienced individual than the normal single bladed lightsaber. However, because of how few people use it & understand how to counter its fighting style with unique attacks & blocks, when used by a very experienced individual it actually ends up being far deadlier & far more unpredictable to opponents than the very common single bladed fighting styles
If I'm not mistaken, he also says that it is actually not that much of a threat because you already know the position of the other blade at anytime by just looking at the main one. Therefore making it mildly predictable
@@juanbonyorni2144 You're entirely right here, but Bane put a heavy emphasis on learning from Kas'im the blademaster. He was the one explaining a lot of the perks and drawbacks and even though it was predictable, even in the era of the New Sith Wars, most Jedi and Sith alike were not as skilled in saber combat to be able to actually apply that information. While it is more predictable, recognizing that it is and actually applying that information are entirely different beasts. And lets not get started on Jar'kai, lightsaber dual wielding

That up-down grip (as you called a spear grip) you used actually is proper staff grip (at least in Chinese martial arts as I was taught) as opposed to having both hands faced down, during doubled edged use.

@B Smith Have you forgot dueling or small scale brawls? I agree with Chad. I think the double blades never catch up because the portability of normal sidearm trumped it, and if you want to use a polearm, just get a real polearm with greater reach. For a personal combat melee weapon, this thing will be hard to carry and cumbersome to draw. There is a reason why Katana is popular alternative choice to long sword type of side arm despite the fact that it has less reach, the quick draw. This thing just fly against everything a small scale personal combat side arm needs to function in that setting and outclassed in battlefields by normal polearms
Exactly. It is too cumbersome for self defense and it is impossible to use on battlefield because it will hit friendly soldiers who are fighting by your side.
@B Smith And a halberd or war hammer isn't impractical when fighting in formation?
Have you ever heard of poking? Maybe spears...
Darth Maul's sword would be INCREDIBLY useful and deadly, but only if he used it right (which he didn't).
The enormous tactical advantage of his blades are that he can turn either of them on and off at will. He could fight in a standard sword vs sword duel and while parrying his opponent's strike, activate the other end of his blade and slice through his opponent who didn't realize that blade was ever there in the first place. Or while making a swing in one direction, deactivate that blade an activate the blade from the opposite end.
There are so many opportunities to strike an enemy with what would be a damn near impossible to parry strike.
All the advantages of single and double weapons with no drawbacks at all.
I can't remember which video but a youtuber addressed this and said that the sith considered it a sign of weakness to do this, because you didn't win the fight with your skill and brutality, you only cheated.
Like the other guy said, this is viewed negatively by both the Jedi and the Sith. Here’s a quote regarding it;
Tràkata's [the combat technique that involves deactivating your saber during combat] reliance on deception has sparked debate among the Jedi and Sith, with some viewing it as a dishonorable or unsportsmanlike approach to combat. The Sith may criticize it for showing weakness, preferring direct displays of power. Meanwhile, some Jedi argue it strays from the path of honor and openness they strive to uphold. Despite this, Tràkata remains a testament to the diversity of thought and strategy that exists within the Star Wars universe's martial traditions.

I think it's only barely a polearm on the condition that it is just two swords screwed together. If both blades share the same longsword/hand-and-a-half handle, rather than two full-length longsword handles, the user cannot really adjust their grip to meaningfully extend the reach. An example of this would be the double-bladed sword (based on a spear from Japanese mythology) of Izanagi-no-Okami from the Persona series. In that weapon, the handle only has enough space for a typical longsword grip (from the user in question, at least). There simply isn't enough "pole" to give it the advantages of a polearm.
That's why you specifically design the weapon with a longer hilt. If you're just sticking an extra blade on the end of a standard-length longsword hilt, you're making a pretty big mistake.
I think in his imaginary perfect world Shad sees himself, mounting a dragon, sitting on machicolations, with sword, that has another sword as a pommel.

@Sightless_Seeker Disney didn't wipe out the canon Lucasfilms did. All Disney did was ask to make it less confusing which could have been done with less purging. They didn't have to do all they did but they did so we got what we got. This was nice to watch but keep in mind that with a double bladed saber you can always switch your grip. Also the biggest thing with the double blade is that it brings some psychological edge too as most people panic with the extra blade.
Agreed. If you are used to fight against single weapon, or even one in each hand, this would have massive suprise element especially if user has "mastered" using this. I belive that if we take let's say 5cm from each swords lenght, and put it in the grip, while still keeping crossguards or adding something like those knots in messers for extra protection, not only would it be really, really cool, it would also be one of the best weapons in it's class. There could even be a "quick latch" for disconnecting the two blades for added versatility

"In combat, your mind tries to keep track of each blade separately, effectively doubling the number of possibilities. But the two blades are connected: by knowing the location of one, you are automatically aware of the location of the other. In actual practice, the double-bladed lightsaber is more limited than the traditional lightsaber. It can do more damage, but it is less precise. It requires longer, sweeping movements that don't transition well into a quick stab or thrust. Because the weapon is difficult to master, however, few among the Jedi - or even the Sith - understand it. They don't know how to attack or defend effectively against it. That gives those of us who use it an advantage over most of our opponents."

@Guacamole Nigga Penis except a lightsaber would make even quicker work than a rapier, as a blade of plasma somehow contained into a beam would have such little weight that it would almost be like it didn't have any. The blades also have no weight whatsoever. Its just burning plasma. So, there isn't any weight to put behind it, making a different style of fighting entirely.
SWVWC that’s not necessarily true the blade’s weight comes from the magnetic field that maintains the super heated plasma blade in it’s shape I’m not fully versed on how it works but I do know that the stronger the magnetic field the more force you have to put in to your swings
@@jordanreed7570 Depending on you see the blade. If you think its a simple Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (or a laser), it would have no weight as it is just light (which begs the question, how it simply stops after 4 or so feet). But as a plasma, it is simply superheated (or super-cooled) gases. The weight also depends on the gas, but generally, it seems to be without weight just looking at it. I mean, if it can be deflected behind your back, it MUST not have that much weight.
I actually went to a "lightsaber school" for a few years. Basically we fought with long plastic sticks, and the guys who founded the school used kendo, fencing and the 7 styles of combat that are used in star wars as inspiration to create this martial art.
We did have double lightsabers, one guy even made it his main training weapon. I have tried it a few times, and honestly with a bit of practice it is a great weapon. If that was a true metal sword, the weight would probably be very unpractical, but when fighting someone who has a simple lightsaber, you just have so much more speed and options, so it is actually really good. It is also especially good when fighting two or more opponents at once, because you can attack on multiple sides without having to swing your sword the whole way.
I'm also pretty sure it would be useless against a shield + sword user, so that's probably another reason why theses weapons never really existed.
So I think your analysis is on point here ! I think it is a great dueling weapon, or when fighting without shields !

It might be worth mentioning that the “double bladed lightsaber” is actually a lightsaber-staff... it’s not meant to be a sword
Liimo2000co It's not meant to be a sword but it still virtually cuts through anything and causes extreme burns with a light touch. @@radioactivebirdj.1845 that’s fair, but also, unlike a sword, I believe you can canonically toggle one or both sides... meaning that while it is functionally more similar to a double-sided sword, you can also use it as a one-sided lightsaber with an abnormally long handle.
Liimo2000co Oh I didn't really consider that thanks for pointing it out. Also it brings up the question on why two handed light saber styles didn't use longer handles considering the standard is light enough for one handed use.

The double-bladed lightsaber is often referred to as a saberstaff, furthering the point that it was meant to be used like a staff.
I was really waiting for a bo staff comparison. Seems to be the most logical jump.
Ray park, the actor who played darth maul who was a martial artist treated the double bladed lightsaber as if it was a quarterstaff
Yes, but they also didn't have the hilt guards, and were lighter than a two-bladed metal sword.

Lightsabers have basically 360 degrees of edge alignment. That probably helps significantly in a weapon like this where it is more difficult to control alignment
But it's incredibly detrimental when every strike toward your opponent is also a strike towards yourself.
I don't know how many medichlorians you need to safely wield Darth Maul's lightsaber, but I'm pretty sure it's a lot.
@@CrownRock1nah man u don't need no force for that , u just train ur body in a specific range of motion and after years of practice with a dummy blade , ur body will just never go into a position where it can hurt u , unless ofc ur opponent trys to take advantage of ur second blade and lead it into ur body , which again can be exploited if u have whole martial art based around using said blade , u would hope ur opponent focuses on the one facing u and that would distract him from the one that's attacking him leaving him more vulnerable than urself. anyway darth maul comes from a race of warriors , so it wouldn't be too big of stretch for him to be a master at wielding such a thing even without the force
Super Marijus the problem with a double sided lightsaber is that they aren’t sharp, and they don’t have an edge, they are HOT, and have to be held in the way Darth Maul does, which is very limited movement. In the video you can see a more effective technique, with a greater range of movement, but a lot of strikes require the second blade to touch the body, this couldn’t happen with a lightsaber or you’d kill yourself.
An advantage of the lightsaber we didn’t see is that the blades can be turned off, meaning with training you could turn off the blade as it was about to hit you, and turn it back on when it was safely past your body, but at that point to not get yourself killed you’d need to take into account:
Your opponents strike
Your defending blade
Retracting your second blade
The retraction speed of your second blade
Extending your second blade
The extension speed of your second blade
And then the same again with any strike you make.
So, you either limit your movements or risk your life to your own blade - it’s much more practical as a sword than a lightsaber.
@@TomPriceism Which is what makes Darth Maul awesome. A saber is practical. Easy to use. A light staff is hard to use. So you practice with it. He had the training.
@@TomPriceism Touching your body with a lightsaber wouldn't kill you. It would just singe you. You would have to push it into your body to cause significant damage. Also, I don't believe that you HAVE to touch you body. You could train to make slightly wider swings and wear more form-fitting clothing to prevent ruining them.

If you have ever made the foam lightsabers, the double bladed saber allows to you easily overwhelm most single blade users. However, a skilled defensive user has the ability to counter and attack at the hands making it a liability. It's a pressure weapon, once you lose initiative your pretty screwed unless you can split it into 2 separate blades.
I thought this would be debunked fairly quickly ... I was wrong ... honestly ... I'm glad I was. It might not be practical, but just from your "messing around" with it and seeing the viability makes it look viable enough in-terms of functionality. How epic.
When D&D 3.0 was a new thing, there was a huge argument in RPG newsgroups about practicality of two-bladed swords and some people vehemently argued that having 2-bladed sword doing 2d8 points of damage (while regular longsword did 1d8) was reasonable as you could strike twice, and there were historical examples of 2-bladed swords, supposedly somebody found a pic of one from a Korean museum or whatever.
This led to other people designing multi-bladed weapons as a parody - there was 3-bladed sword for 3d8 damage, 4-bladed sword for 4d8 and so on. Because why not! I think the best was a sphere-like cage around a person which had chain&balls attached all over and the designer proclaimed that using same logic, it should do 20d10 damage per attack.
That Sphere of Blades sounds like a converted version of Wall of Swords....and would actually make for a good defensive/offensive D&D spell...hahaha

I could see this being a weapon that a royal guard might use seeing as it is both possible to use it effectively and it's freaking terrifying which are two things that you really want in a ceremonial weapon
3:00 This is actually how I use my custom double-bladed lightsaber in sparing with my friends and convention opponents. There's a lot of functionality maneuverability and versatility using this stance.
The thing is with a sword you have to specifically strike on the edge. A lightsaber has no edge so that is not a problem. That means the double bladed lightsaber can be wielded more like a staff. Another factor to consider is the weight. With a sword most of the weight comes from the steel blades. The blade on a lightsaber is completely weightless, which means the only weight on a lightsaber is the weight of the hilt. So a double bladed lightsaber can be wielded much faster and more effortlessly than a double bladed sword.
Well said. However you now have a new problem in that with the lightsabre you know which end is the dangerous one. The double-ended lightsabre runs the risk of hurting the owner or even your own allies. Certain single sword positions might not be possible with a double-blade.

That would be three-quarter swording.
Holding a double sword normally would be half-double-swording. So in that case, you're still swording and by that chance you've got a chance to catch your opponent off-guard because he doesn't expect you having a far superior weapon!
Murderstroke is reverse swording
If you half-sword with a double sword, you actually make your reach longer. This is sorcery.
Treat a double bladed sword more like a Bo staff, double ends make for quick short motions and allow slashing swings with backwards stabbing. If you are able to spin the sword quickly like the bo it becomes quick blocking spin. You would need a good skill in the right martial arts but totally useable in my opinion and I am glad you can show this as well as the best way to hold it.
As a sword I suppose it would be impractical *BUT* as a lightsaber, it would be very effective. A lightsaber is retractive so it’s easy to carry around and it doesn’t have shoulders so it would be easier to grip.
And you have the option of turning off one blade to make moves that are only possible with one blade.
I think the Darth Bane trilogy had that mentioned somewhere. I remember that it said the weapon had less versatility than a single blade, but had the advantage of being less known and harder to predict.
until your return blow cuts your arm off.
indeed and also as the lightsabers blade are made of... well, light, it should not be as heavy
Brian Schwatka if your opponent overpowers you (in Star Wars and real life) they could literally just force the blade right into your side. Imagine a sideways strike, your opponent catches the blade being wary of thrusting strikes, then pushes it the other way so that the rear blade cuts into your side if you aren’t wearing chain mail or at least a leather chestpiece.

SHAD! the double bladed sword is a tournament weapon.
If it were to be a thing, it would be used in tournaments. Or duels.
Exhibition weapons do show up in history on occasion. Using a weapon that is impractical for normal use could give people an interesting reputation. Some of these weapons were refined into a more useable form, while others were left in the dust of history. Any historical example of a double bladed sword might fall into that later category, but flails are there too.
While i already knew that, there are those who don't.
Your information is welcome here, Sir Forrest.
Duels... of the Fates.
I think darth mauls double saber is even more practical because based on what was seen in the movie he could individually activate and deactivate both sabers
@@MrAwesome1105 The fact that the entire 'blade' dematerializes (not to mention the fact that it is effectively all cutting edge) makes the weapon quite a bit more practical then you'd expect.
I don’t know a thing about swords or sword fighting, but this guy clearly knows what he’s talking about and it looks like he’s having so much fun! Great video.
Hey, it's you.
Who’s you? 🤣

O
Thank you
The biggest weakness of the double bladed lightsaber was that the hilt was a big target. There was a dark Jedi who converted his standard hilt lightsaber into a double bladed one, the smaller one handed grip nullified this weakness. I'd like to see a double bladed one handed rapier.
