For me, the "test" for fawning behaviour versus "normal" reactions to others, is whether or not you feel like you're walking on egg shells and have to watch what you say and do to avoid conflict. If you're constantly walking on egg shells, you're fawning to a Narcissist - this is something to be aware of with family, colleagues, and friends, but if you have to live with it day in and day out with a spouse it does become the "default" reaction and you're no longer responding in a way that reflects your values and opinions but those of your Narcissist. For this and of course other reasons, it's time to move on...
Since leaving the narcissist I find myself avoiding arguing in public and people raising their voices, I also find myself avoiding drama and gossip, which is probably fear of conflict and confrontation. Over apologising is another thing I do. Apologise to others if they walk in front of me in a supermarket even though they can see me but do not move out the way. If I say I will always be there, support them, I feel bad for not being there lets say I am out with family or hospital appointment I apologise for letting that person down and apologise out of respect. Through counselling I learnt I apologise in fear of hurting, upsetting someone. I am still healing, I am still work in progress and I am not perfect. I recognise these behaviours in me. Thank you Elizabeth 💜
You are brilliant Elizabeth. You're incredibly knowledgeable and truly understand your subject. I'm in awe and pray you continue to grow. Thankyou for your non-stop efforts. 💚.
Thank you for this insightful explanation, Elizabeth 🙏🏻💜. Experienced all this. Still healing and work in progress. Recognised the behaviours and coping mechanisms in me to survive their abuse and at this point I avoid interacting but only to bare minimum, also avoid arguing withdrawing myself at any perceived awkward situation. From therapy learned that not everyone is able to be kind as it's a trait from genuinely empathetic people only, also to self reflect and conquer my own fears/flaws. Everyday is a blessing to keep learning and healing. Prioritising self care is not narcissistic, it's self respect, dignity and taking responsibility for your own self mindfully 💯
