- I've used many different ash catchers over the last several years and I've also seen many videos of other people using them. My main conclusion is the majority of ash catchers are trash. Trashcatchers.

Being a stoner in a small town full of stoners, I've never heard of anyone not fully snapping the contents of the bowl/tube into the bong. Like everyone does it and you have to change the water after a few hits because all the ash. That's actually the reason I bought my catcher, to keep my bong free of all the chunks of black
it takes some finesse
I used to snap when I first started. But over time for my own cleaning sake, I just relax my pull at the end instead of turning it up and it milks to white ash

A ash catcher is a really nice way to add a different rip when your pulling because if you have a straight up normal stem then it’s real choppy but a ash catcher makes the hits smoother and it makes my bong look like a machine gun lol

The way to go is a dry catch or if you like having a perc get one with a splash guard as you mentioned. Pulsar has a pretty good one, with the water level you need for adequate percolation it's basically impossible for any of it to splash over

with the 45deg ashcatcher you can twist it back towards you while the beaker is at a angle and pretty much get the ash catcher level

The problem with dry ash catchers is even they are poorly designed. Most dry catches have the arm leading to your bong too close to where the bowl sits, so you have horizontal airflow right next to ash coming down, which can lead to ash and excessive resin getting sucked into your piece. My dry catch gets dark brown from resin after only a few days of regular use. I've been heavily considering having someone commission a design I've had in mind that separates the two points of airflow, to where ash goes straight into the water and only smoke gets pulled out.
Look into Solid state concepts they have the best design. No ash ever and perfect airflow.

Facts. The only ones I actually use are dry ash catchers, ones without a perc. Since I snap my bowls, it's just practical for me to use a dry ash catcher in order to keep my bongs cleaner and make cleaning them easier. It's also nice that dry ash catchers don't ruin or change the experience of the bong as much as regular ash catchers do.
Ash catchers are super necessary for complex pieces tbat you DONT want to get dirty at all because of the complexity of the piece and or the delicacy of the piece. Long story short get a simlle beaker bong!

The best glass is also the easiest to clean.
Honeycombs with large holes are easier to hit.
Use salt and rubbing alcohol to clean daily, then use the dirty alcohol to soak bowls.
I only use the reclaimer type with the removable plugs. These days it's about 95% hash so they really come into their own. Don't typical smoke it, it's just easy to clean, freeze the plug and pop out the oil puck.
Legal growing turned me into a hash snob.
I'm 65 and I have tried every type of bong. I think the best is an old fashioned bamboo bong. Use a small thimble to line the stem. Easy to make and basically disposable. I made my first one in 1975.
My favorite ash catcher ever was a matrix with a recycler where it attached to the bong, so it did a GREAT job at keeping the water in while getting good percolation. Can’t find em anymore tho except the ones that are super expensive and I ball on a budget

Diamond glass makes them. They run about $50-$60. They have the matrix perc, showerhead and so on. It's called a recycler ash catcher and I swear by them

I use a recycler ash catcher (Diamond Glass) and it is THE BEST ash catcher I've used. You can fill it well above the perc and get the filtration, and it doesn't shoot water and ash into the bong.
The ultimate test is being able to rip straight out of the ash catcher. No water in your mouth=good ash catcher. I recommend a recycling ash catcher

I have a TAG double honeycomb ashcatcher that is designed very well and has a recycling function. $160 but it matches my piece and works perfectly
The 45 degree catcher can be twisted side ways so the beaker can be tilted up just twist the ash catcher and it’ll work
Try a Swiss wheel ash catcher, good percolation, good chug, easy to clean.
Dry ash catchers changed my mind. HIGHLY recommend. I was impressed.
Best ash catcher by far that I’ve tried (read: does not regurgitate into the main water pipe champer): a RECYCLING ASH CATCHER! It totally prevents solids escaping if you get your water levels dialed in

I use a left coast ash catcher, it’s tall so it holds most of the ash. Then I have a 3d printed dry ash catcher. It’s light and saves minutes a day of cleaning my bong

I use a ash catcher and a bowl filter screen so I can get the extra filtration of the ash catcher for a smoother hit but it's also easy to clean. I've had some ash catcher that gave me some super smooth hits.

Can confirm the cracked glass honeycombs get clogged super quick and are hard to clean. Also make much more bubbles then normal honeycombs so the water will 100% just bubble and go into the bong until it can’t perc or it’s clogged lol

Why don’t you just not put any water in the double disc percs? The ash ain’t getting through both the percs it won’t spill water into anything and it shouldn’t make you have to work any harder to draw more air and mess up your bongs percs right?

Ash catchers that have percolators that run into your piece when you fill over them are called dry ash catchers and are intended for no or very low water levels just to extinguish the ash. It's not designed as a filter even though it looks like one
Any company not mentioning this on their product page is very dodgy.
I think they are made just for looks/just to trick people.
I think anyone smoking should know what style of ash catcher they need for their piece but I think they are a must have for any bong user. Catches so much tar, tested with my filters. Keeps the bong cleaner

I took your suggestion and did so, they bubble pretty great. Also they have a, "pro" with a removable downstem which is honestly awesome. I've never seen an ash catcher like that.

I always get the nastiest tasting hits out of my beaker whenever I put an ashcatcher on it.
This is why i use my Z for my dab rigs, it catches most of the reclaim so it doesnt clog my dab rig too quick

Strongly reccomend the heisenberg percolator ash catcher. Their percs work as intended and they do catch ash

That’s why I use dry catchers. I put just a small amount of water in to cover the bottom, it helps catch ash instead of it blowing around inside and whipping through and into the piece. I have a cheap knock off similar to the Toro ratchet dry catch. Shooters. The Cave 🔥

Watched the video and I agree he don’t know what he’s talking about with half of this, every ash catcher shown in this video is China glass, you can definitely get ash catchers that keep our bong clean and function fine rip after rip, just make sure your not buying boney China glass

The ash catchers term is used for both the wet and dry peices, that’s what they’re called at the smoke store I work at as well

I had never heard of an ash catcher until thus week, on one of your videos lol. To be fair though I also had bo idea percs in a bong or disc's was a thing either. I smoked close to 15 years ago, stopped and now I've been smoking again for about a year for pain and a little enjoyment. Back when i was first smoking a bong was a bong. Old school simple. I had bo idea so much tech has gone into them to make them not hit like trash. Anticipating my new double perc bong will be in the mail tomorrow. Excited about that.
Back then it was almost all plastic bongs. I don't miss that shit but I do remember being happy as a 15 year old when I bought I new one.
I use an ash catcher with both my bongs, I've found they have a balancing point where the water doesn't go through but it bubbles nicely. Even if they didn't have a perc, I'd still run them because I like to snap my bowls.
1:47 I have a tall beaker I think it’s a 18 inch from top to bottom and when I use a ash catcher with a percolator with a 45 degree I don’t really need to tip it cause i can fill it pretty high up cause even if I pull it hard It usually don’t touch my lips
i have an 18ml dry ashcatcher for my beaker, i put a broken downstem in it to fit the 14ml bowl and it still has the good airflow but also has the little perc, though it is just a big gaping hole with nothing else its good enough for a third water filter and keeps the water out and when i clear the bong i lift the downstem from the ashcatcher. wish i had seen this before i bought my first one.

Yeah I got a few opinions on ash catchers for sure. Some it's necessary for people. But I do believe it doesn't get rid of the cleaning. If anything now you gotta clean the ash catcher AND the peice.
Exactly. It "can" keep your bong cleaner but you still gotta clean it
The point isn’t to eliminate cleaning your piece it’s to make it easier to clean because there’s less gunk on it also slows down staining

Haven’t finished the video but I think I know we are going with this, LOL my ass catcher with a perk was dropped and the perk broke off on the inside so I had to break the perk even more on the inside to be able to pour the glass out And it ended up working so much better that I realized how much it sucked with a percolator

Got an ash catcher with my freeze pipe recycler piece. It out weighs the base and pulled the bong over and broke both of them!
It’s best to have several bongs & ash catchers , that way you can rotate & see what works best for each .
Straight tubes with heavy base would stop it falling over , matched with a dry ash catcher ( still add water ) .
I wouldn’t use an ash catcher with a beaker bong .

I like crushed disc ash catchers with a j hook which becomes a build a bong but on a bong with multiple chambers it creates too much drag

i put a small mesh catcher inside the bottom of my bowl piece. prevents ash and weed from coming through the bottom and keeps my bong cleaner wayyy longer

Mine has a simple two way perc on each end. Water will be black while the main perc is spotless. Unfortunately it broke but it was about time. Won't use my rig until i get a new one.
I don't get why people put them on oil rigs. Too much filtering and it kills the flavor. Or the ones who use the same pieve for flower and oil... Building a big rig is learned. You know what does and doesn't work.
