Duane Allman probably was the best Guitarist to live, to some this stings...but..how old was he...24-25....I can listen and listen to him over and over his tone was amazing...and then it was gone...Listen to the tracks on here with him and Clapton amazing too...
I was there 18yrs. old lived in sayville long island N.Y. i remember duane hitting the stage. they were a great live band. then it was up to the poconos in PA. at the racetrack....great times trhings have changed for the worst.....
I woke up one morning with this stuck in my head and couldn't remember where I last heard it. later that day I had this incredible urge to watch Almost Famous and there it was
I was at SB 66-71....this was right after I left....but got to see Duane a few times there, inc their 1st show with Chicago as the headliner ( on a Thursday night) ;-) EPIC ! eg The 2nd set they played last and did the MT Jam to 50 of us left in the Gym ! CHANGED my Musical Life to this Day :-) ! So much so , that the Mt Jam is my signature piece !
What a loss for music that Duane would be taken from us just 40 days after this was recorded. (But Heaven's music got a little better I bet!) @sempcompellis: Rolling Stone has ranked Duane as high as #2 behind Hendrix (more recently demoted to #10). Not bad recognition. He is my favorite guitarist. He may not have been a Malmsteen shredder, but so what right? There's thousands of the rapid-fire scale climbers out there. But man Duane played with so much soul and style and pizazz. And how bout dat wicked SLIDE!! Been playing guitar for a long time and I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll never be able to come close to how he made it sound. (P.S. Dickey is the one I think gets truly overlooked. Duane would agree too if he were here I think.) Peace
In not so short: Duane was brilliant...in his short years, he left us with a huge body of music and a sound that is purely Duane. Yes, Rolling Stone rated him 2 best guitar player in America and most likely the world, second only to Jimi Hendrix...a couple of weeks after he was /discovered,; l, it is told, was to put a band together where each player was better than the next and all of them better than him. So, he must have thought VERY highly of Betts. Gregg says that Betts had never, ever been seen playing slide on an electric guitar. But, after Duane's tragic death, on a 3000 mile flight across the country (5 hours?), Gregg watched him put slide to electric and have it down by the time they landed. Now, not Duane down...no BODY will ever be a Duane...but there is a recording here of his first show....and he is damned great. Recently, Duane (I believe) regained his 2nd place standing in America and 10 in the world....we are talking a short life here....the numbers are astounding and the music pure brilliance and light.....Thanks to Gregg and the rest of the band for keeping thr unmistakable Allman sound alive....!!!
Duane doesn't play slide guitar here. That's what we mortals do. He attacks the guitar, bitch slaps it, and makes it scream and do things that no guitar should be able to do in polite company. Damn that good ol' boy could play!!
@HendrixClaptonSRV No kidding - can you imagine . . . Duane had been playing guitar for barely 10 years when this was recorded; imagine just how good he could have been. A cryin' shame. One of my three favorite guitarists, ever.

"That's my brother singin!' : ) you can hear that pride in Duane's voice. IMHO this is one of the most smokin' versions...Thanks for sharing.!

This is what the original band sounded like. Incomparable. I was there from Piedmont Park on. Damn, I miss those days.
