Hiking Kauai | Weeping Wall at Mount Waialeale

- In this video, Wild and Growing teams up with our close friends to hike the elusive and very challenging Weeping Wall Hike. Although this hike is not very long, only about 6 miles round trip, or steep about 2,000 FT of elevation, it is challenging for a number of reasons. First, the trail is only accessible by a high clearance off-roading vehicle or a treacherous hike which can approximately double the mileage for your overall hike. Second, the trail is not well marked and you MUST go with an experienced hiker who’s done it before many times. There are guides who you can hire to bring you or if you are like us you have some experienced friends! Lastly, you must have Tabis (a specialized shoe for sea fishing which is designed to prevent slipping in water and on rocks) or any felt bottom water shoe because they grip wet rocks better than hiking boots or sneakers. This is necessary because just about the whole hike is sloshing your way up a river.
The above might have sounded very intimidating and tiring for you, luckily we filmed our experience so you can still witness this spectacular hike! This hike is not accessible for most people so we hope this video will help you experience the beauty of Mount Waialeale and the magnificent weeping wall without getting in danger. You can also experience this amazing site by taking a helicopter tour of the island. Many tours view Mt Waialeale and we saw many helicopters on our hike. This is a much safer option for anyone who is not an extremely experienced hiker with a guide.
PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS HIKE ALONE OR WITHOUT THE GUIDE OF AN EXPERIENCED HIKER. DOING SO IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS

whoa the hike is soo pretty wow, but it also looks so steep and dangerous, too. Kauai is gorgeous! There's literally green everywhere.
It was definitely scary at time. Even for experienced hikers there is no way we could have done it without our guides. Even at times our guides got a bit confused for which direction to go. So if anyone is thinking of doing this hike, please find and experienced person to guide you! So so worth it! Our favorite hike yet.
Enjoyed your hiking guys. Feels like I am hiking with you. Crossing the river looks fun but I bet the water was freezing cold. 🏔
The water was actually quite refreshing because it was so hot out! This was seriously one of our all time favorite hikes. Thanks for watching!
You Should Try Adding Small Clips Of What You Wear When Hiking! Best Was The Water Fall I Think It Was ! I think I Would have stoped to Throw myself in the water as well ! Seems like So Much Fun ! Everything Was Beautiful As Always !
Thanks for the idea! I'll add that to my list of videos to film. Thank you for watching, I appreciate it.
Hippiie LoveOfficial Oh I agree! About small clips of what you wear. That would be super helpful!!
Beautiful views!
Thank you!
Great vid, I love to hike ! And I love interesting facts too! Such a good idea putting them though out!
Thank you we really appreciate your feedback. We hoped that while you took a virtual hike with us you could learn some things about the land too! Glad you felt that way.
That was a pretty dry day you picked, nice, aloha from Kauai
Yes we lucked out! Thanks for watching!
Gosh! I bet this was amazing. I’ve been eating to go to awesome scenery like this!
I highly suggest visiting Kauai, it's considered the most naturally beautiful island since it's less touristy. Tons of pop culture is filmed here from Jurassic Park to Lilo and Stitch (based there). I hope you get a chance to check it out :)
Hannah and The Mushrooms of the World! I didn't realize David made your music! This video is insanely cool!!!+
Yeah Richard's brother, David, made some (not all) of the music that we use in our videos! Thanks for watching, we are very proud of this video and hike!
Great video, coming this weekend and will see if it's possible. Feel like hiking it again? How long did it take you total?
Beautiful views I love how you put facts Threw out the video
Thank you, we try to keep our videos factual to keep viewers interested throughout the video. Appreciate your comment and thank you for watching!
I have personally been all the way to the back wall. #1 you best be in incredible shape and start well before the sun comes up #2 You MUST have a 4WD vehicle and sometimes water crossings will prevent you from access #3 There are many trails that are used for hunting and WONT lead you to the back wall so make sure you stay as close to the river as possible. #4 Your entire body will be soaking wet and muddy within the first 1/2 mile and will remain that way the entire rest of the day. #5 there are many places where if you fall or make a mistake you WILL DIE #6 This is NOT a hike and requires you to be bent over on all 4’s frequently... #7 there are basic instructions in the “Kauai revealed” book but sometimes can be hard to follow, again stick close to the river and don’t be fooled by marked hunting trails #8 if you are moving at a very fast pace you can expect to make it up in 4-5 hours, but remember you have to go all the way back down AND drive out safely. #9 If you do get injured or stuck there will be no help for DAYS... there is no access via helicopter and the 4WD trail can get blocked by fallen trees or flooded rivers. #10 The hike WILL be the most adventurous thing you ever done in your life and is nothing like youve ever seen... with 3 thousand foot walls surrounding you it really makes you appreciate the vastness of nature. The Blue Hole is NOT a real destination and is NOT worth all the effort just to go there and turn back... The back wall IS however worth it and would a once in a lifetime experience. (Use any of these steps at your own risk, you most likely will be injured and be extremely fatigued... you may also have the best nights rest of your life following the adventure)
Yes exactly! We explain this in detail in our description. You MUST have a guide with you if you are not experienced or have never been before. Even with our experienced guides there were still moments when we got turned around.
Glad you got to experience this incredible adventure!
Hey what do you mean by “ the back wall.”
@@WildandGrowing Well, sounds like something my son and I will do. We are definitely not new at back trail hiking. This is now on my bucket list!!! HAHHAHAHAA ❤
I did it last week for the first time. Didn’t use a guide. You really don’t need one as long as you have decent route finding skills.
Do they have guides that go to the back wall haven’t found any
Oh this is so gorgeous, I love hiking! So fun!
This was by far our favorite hike ever. It was so adventurous and difficult but oh so rewarding! We wouldn't have been able to see such raw untouched land of Kauai. Thank you for watching :)
Rad!!! On my list to do!!!
So beautiful. Define my not an easy hike at all. Bet the sites make all the work with it.
Ooh no this hike was one of the most difficult ones for us. You aren't climbing a mountain, but trudging through a flowing river takes a lot out of you! It was absolutely beautiful the entire way and we got to see parts of Kauai most people don't get to see! Truly untouched jungle. Thank you for watching.
beginner question here but in the video it says not to wear hiking boots... what kind of footwear would be good for a hike like this crossing streams etc? Thanks for sharing looks INCREDIBLY beautiful. Probably too difficult for me but I can dream :)
Tabis
Love it! My wife and I plan to hike blue hole on Jan 11, 2020. Do you have a recommend experience hiker guide ? Thanks
Sorry for the delayed response, trying to get the best answer to your question. So hiking the Weeping Wall/Blue Hole can be very expensive because you need a high clearance vehicle. There is a guiding company on Kauai that can do it but the cost runs up to $1k. Here is their website, hope it's not too late! hikekauaiwithme.com
The area where they were dancing in the beginning is the T-rex Paddock from Jurassic Park.
I was just going to post that. I’m surprised how many people mention the JP gates but miss this gem.
Dream hike, do you know any guides that you would recommend?
Our friends (locals) guided us. I don’t think a lot of hiking guides offer this hike as an option since it is very technical and challenging.
@@WildandGrowing thank you for the reply. My husband and I did a bunch of research and did it without a guide at the end of August. Absolutely amazing 😍
Have you traveled to Kauai or Hawaii in general? What was your most memorable experience?
I am a little confused to how the beginning of the trail is accessed. Based upon the all trail map you can start along the river at a water level monitoring station 22.0623868, -159.4679197
But other people speak about going through the Jurassic park gates on their way to the hike, but when I look up the location of the gates they are a 7mile hike in off of a different road. Would you be able to describe what roads you took to access the hike?
@@jessicabrunet2878 So the trail is accessed by a road called Loop Road, which is an unofficial road. If you have an all-terrain vehicle you can drive it (as long as the conditions are perfect) or you can add about 7 miles to your hike. Loop road goes up the hill passed Keahua Arboretum. The trails on All Trails are not accurate because the trail to the Weeping Wall and Blue Hole is not an official or marked trail, which is why it is advised to go with a very seasoned expert.
Done the hike myself would only suggest with an experienced guide
You guys had such clear skies and little to no rain you guys got lucky
As a child I almost drowned in a Kauai rip tide. Eventually was dragged out of the sea, over razor-sharp coral like a rag doll by other tourists. Still one of my favorite places
I tried, but were blocked the stream before the forest… it was too strong I couldn’t cross it, and i might be flooded away if I step in… so sad. But I got some good drone shot…
Btw, these helicopters really annoying and making so much noise, like no any birds can live near blue hole….
We should ban the helicopter!
Unfortunately it’s a huge destination spot for the helicopter tour companies. We don’t recommend going here without an experienced guide. The stream is very treacherous.
