One of my good friends is from London and has explained that garden centers in the US are very different from garden centers in Great Britain. She does love her Boden, though! I have yet to try it, but it sounds right up my alley! Thank you for the video, and glad you’re back and feeling better!
I live in the states and discovered Boden 20 years ago! I STILL wear the dresses, skirts, and sweaters I bought from Boden decades ago. I appreciate that when I wear Boden, I won't see anyone wearing my same outfit. Boden is not afraid of color. I love, love, love their clothing. They always have sale items, if full-price is prohibitive. Liberal returns too. Free shipping!! Give it a try, ladies.
I don’t understand all the rude comments? Why watch if you don’t want advice!! I so appreciated this video! It was so helpful as none of us have ever been this age before! lol I love your style and very much value your opinion! 🥰
Thank you so much. I think it s only one rude comment, unless I've missed something. People seem to have kindly put her in her place for me. Largely this is a lovely supportive community.
Charity shops / ebay / resellers / vintage, all day long! To me, standard retail prices are ridiculous. As for so-called 'high end' / designer / luxury - not on your life - bonkers. In my experience, there's no need to pay standard retail. I can never *not* find things I like, that are nice quality, at gratifyingly low prices. I seldom pay over £10 for a piece. For me, the hunt, and the homing in on a bargain, is a huge part of the satisfaction with, and enjoyment of wearing, the item - that's clothing, accessories, and jewellery. I think my brain is now wired to be actively repelled by pieces over, say, £20!
Actually this year that’s what I’m going to try to do. I have far far too many clothes. I’m going to try really hard not to buy full stop. But second hand when I do if possible. I really can’t afford to keep buying.
@trishhickson1550 good luck with your resolution! I hope you find the process as enjoyable and satisfying as the purchases themselves, in the same way I do ♥️
Great advice, I really enjoy your videos and it is important that clothing companies recognise that people over 60 want to stay current and looking nice. You are a good role model for us. We're not dead yet! The days are long gone when women resorted to having their teeth in a glass by the bed, the iron grey perm, the crimplene floral dress, the 20 denier thick 'American Tan' tights, the colour of stewed tea, with white sandals in summer and leather lace-ups in winter. I could go on . . . I just wondered if you liked or had tried 'Nobody's Child'? I bought quite a few pieces of their linen mix items in the summer eg. wide legged trousers, maxi skirts and nice tops and blouses. They washed and ironed really well. Maybe worth a look? M & S stocks 'Nobody's Child' too. Thanks for all the suggestions and advice.
I'm 57 and I particularly love Mango and also have a fair few pieces from Zara. I think if you buy from Mango particularly you are unlikely to look too dated. I also love Other Stories. Cos and Arket are also great places for good quality modern clothes.
Agree with Marks and Spencer’s! I lived in the UK in 2003. I still have some Mand S tops and sweaters I still wear! Talbots on the other hand you are correct. Guaranteed to look like you are in your 60s, 70s and 80s! Some good basics and they USED to be very high quality. But many styles there will definitely date you! IMO.
For the next three months I have picked out 30 items plus shoes and boots. If I need anything I'll write it down and have a look later. Your advice about brands is very good.
I've never heard of Boden since I'm in the US. I also never heard of buying clothes in a garden center! I like to shop at Talbots (they offer a good selection for petites), Chicos, JJill & QVC
I’ve been shopping Boden for years. They make the best of everything I ordered summer dresses I’ve had for years because of the quality. I also buy their striped shirts when they’re on sale. I have a brown velvet coat. I bought fromBoden 10 years ago now it’s really trending because of the color and the style. It’s a classic.😊🇺🇸
Firstly, I love the way your hair looks!! Secondly, this is a fabulous video! This 56 year old Canadian girl loves your channel!! ❤🇨🇦 another great shop is the Loft! I love M&S and Quince as well! Chicos is often touted for women, but I find most of the goods look too mature!
Every thing I wear is from my favorite store Walmart. Weather it is old or new. I do buy my Vans at the Vans store. I buy my rock tees at concerts. Th is all I wear and I am happy and I am 70 years old.
Ive Boden items 20 years old and they wash and wear so well. Ive let some Boden skirts go because they were too short 20 years on. Never liked SugarHill Brighton, the sweaters remind me of the patterned ones i was forced to wear in the 70s.
Hi, I live in Australia, and from what I’ve seen online is that “garden centre clothing” is suited to gardening👩🏻🌾. I think Annemarie was simply giving an example to make a point. There’re many more interesting options out there, if we so wish, for our clothing than what’s available at garden centres. We’re welcome to buy what we like. Thank you for the interesting video. 😊
I love Boden and it fetches a good resale value if you decide to sell it on, M&S are great too and I no longer shop at Zara or H&M as the quality is very poor - love a bit of Uniqlo too!
😂 Clothes in garden centres had me laughing. I couldn't agree more! 😂 I usually shop online and Next is my go-to as they sell so many different brands (including Boden, Fatface and Seasalt!) I try to buy in sales as I think clothes are very overpriced and just not worth the money - the Next online clearance section is my addiction! I think many places trade on the premise that people will believe it must be good if it's expensive. In the end, I find there's little difference quality-wise once you get beyond the fast fashion brands.
Excellent list, I do LL Bean for their basics(watch the prints) which truly last but maybe pricey, Uniqueglo for t shirts-they do shrink a bit and occasionally Lands End for basics(again watch the prints). I am definitely going to take a look at the stores you mentioned because I am tired of basics and need a bit of pizazz. Thank you for your honest content.
@@alisonschooley5459 I often get complimented on my LL Bean jeans. People are surprised when I tell them where I got them. And the have functional front pockets!
Great video. I've got the cold too. I think Uniqlo is worth a mention for their HEATTECH range - just what us OAP's need in this weather. I've been a bit disappointed with Mint Velvet recently. They used to do lovely tops but I went to the outlet at the weekend and thought the materials looked rather cheap. It could be that things are bought specially for the outlet. I've always liked Phase 8 and Hobbs but as our department stores in Portsmouth have all closed, I don't get to look at a variety of labels. I don't find buying online easy. I end up sending a lot back.
I love watching your channel for ideas but can you sometimes make allowances and suggestions from less expensive places as not all of us can afford these prices. Next and M and S or even Matalan have done amazing styles and prices or New Look and there are some of us that go into larger sizes. Fat face is nice but not particularly cheap unless during sales. Also TU at Sainsbury's! Thanks
Great advice & style! , my sister and I still work full time, we are in our 60s and we need your channel!! We are style desert lol Do you have a video on shirts - comfortable, stylish and cool fabrics & colours? Thank you love from New Zealand 🇳🇿 p.S. I have already found a nz store selling the sugar hill sweaters etc
Banana Republic has become way too expensive. When I was college age, young 20s it was a very popular store and affordable. I looked the other day at their site and was shocked at the prices. I didn't see anything under $100 and most were way more than that
My local garden centre Van Hage used to do great clothing lines like White Stuff unfortunately it’s been taken over by another GC chain and the clothes are now just as you’ve warned us
I love your ideas but I’m afraid a lot of these stores might be out of my reach price-wise. I’m in the states and have recently found a few things at Chico’s Outlets.
Funny you should mention garden centres, we’re clearing out my mother in laws house and found 14 hideous garden centre handbags with the tags on😂I have a friend who buys jackets and other items from there too and she’s firmly in the eighties.
Not fond of Talbots because their clothing often seems geared towards what they think "women of a certain age" should be wearing! Even the items you highlighted look garish and frumpy in my opinion. Especially those bright colors you talked about! Hideous! To say nothing of those "old lady pastels" that are always pushed on us older women. I prefer Macys for clothing that is varied and not especially geared towards a specific age group. Their sales are great and their customer service is professional. Or the Gap and H&M are nice for just basic pieces. I looked up Bodens (which I'd never heard of or shopped at) on my phone and see that they've got a good sale going on now, so I'll be checking them out this evening. And you are spot on about clothing at garden centers! For some reason our local garden center thought terrible looking and frumpy clothing was something gardeners really, really wanted!! Their buyer must be so out of touch with the reality of what women want to wear! LOL! Awful! Thanks for all your hard work on this informative video!
Where you are saying to shop, are very expensive for us normal women!!! If we like it and it suits us and it’s affordable, we will buy where we think fit.🙄
I personally do not like Boden, Fatface or anything with stripes, they all end up looking frumpy on me, so given away to charity shops. I think they look fine on some people my age (I am 70), but they seem to be a different shape to me. I am a tall hourglass and need quite a lot of shaping, anything with a lot of patterning or oversized jumpers look awful too and a bit like I am a big girl dressed in little girl clothing (not sure how to describe what I mean)! I live near Inverness and most of our shops have gone, so I depend on M and S, I wasn't a fan in the past, but they seem to have better cut, more stylish basics nowadays, trousers and jackets and some lovely bias cut dresses for going out, that shape is ideal for me. I hate buying online, as 9 out of 10 items don't fit well and it takes much longer up here to receive and send things back - you can add on a week! One store we do have is Matalan and it is surprisingly good if you really sift through the stock. They are good on palazzo pants, which suit me and have great fitted jumpers, I usually go a size down to get a good fit at the waist, otherwise I look like a tall shapeless sack! I have found some great bias cut midi skirts and palazzo pants, also jumpers from Tesco, of all places and my jeans always come from there, they are the only ones that fit me!
I disagree on two points: 1. I think your hair looks great, 2. it's rather easy to find classic items as blazers, slacks, buttondown shirts and Tee's for our age group as well at Zara's as at Mango.
@@garmtpug that's so weird, who would think "i think I'll go to a garden centre to buy clothes!"... rubber boots, rain coat, BBQ apron, gardening gloves, etc...yeah... real clothes..nope!
@@janicepym5158 secondary market, all the way! Thrifting, resellers, charity retailers. As for Boden... I think I will forever associate it with a certain type of nice, middle-class, home-counties mummy, with whom I don't qui-i-ite fit in... 😆
Unfortunately, Talbot’s quality has significantly declined over time. The cashmere sweater I bought this season began to pill on the FIRST wearing and after 4-5 wearings it’s much worse and will not be a lasting piece; the fit in petite is way too long through the body. Jeans and corduroys with stretch break down and begin to bubble across the front and upper thigh ( note, the fit is pretty good initially and not pulling or too tight in these areas.) Black jeans fade to grey within months. Another sweater (wool blend) looks 10years old after first few wearings - it’s pilled, matted and looks like it was poorly cared for. I could go on but, in general, fit and quality is nothing like it used to be and prices remain high -e. g. cashmere sweaters around $200 are no bargain.
You mentioned Canada. Unless items are actually manufactured in the US, Canadians have to pay duty on them. Also shipping is very expensive. Fortunately there is a Talbots here in Nova Scotia, however the store doesn’t carry the full line of products. I particularly like Chico’s which is now associated with Talbots but no stores in Canada.
Loads of Canadian on line stores that are independently owned in Canada. I like Shepherds in Ottawa and Lousje and Bean in St Catherine’s. Both have free shipping over a certain dollar amount.
Clothes in a garden centre???? WHY????? I like Boden but everything runs small. Talbots is excellent for blazers. J. Crew has fallen off quality wise but the tissue turtlenecks are excellent. I love M&S. Ralph Lauren and Goielia are too small for me.
I didn't know sea salt or fat face. I am going to order from sea salt. Unfortunately, fat face doesn't ship to Portugal. Only Ireland and US. Thank you 😀
You can find the odd thing in Zara. H &M used to be good but now EVERYTHING there is black, white or beige. So boring. Talbots was great but no longer in UK.
I always end up with junk at TJs and Marshall’s. I have a friend who’s a real shopper. She finds some good deals. You have to be careful. A lot of their brand names are made for them.
Yes. I have a few things. Some items are popular but can look dated. Others are what they call current. The Tina sweater in a bigger size I’m looking at at the moment. It comes up larger according to reviews but I want a relaxed fit so just dithering whether to get small or medium
Agree. Some basics are OK but a lot of Kettlewell looks dated and the Jersey shows every lump and bump. It is good quality though and customer service is great.
I've been frustrated with Kettlewell. I like the concept but I could never find pieces in the same shade and in my size. I think they do too many colours. I've just sent for a dress from them in the sale but I'm not trying to match it with anything else they have.
I’ve just ordered a belt in the sale and corduroy trousers. The sale is the way to go. I really don’t like the elasticed wrap tops and so on. Too dated. The concept needs modernising I think.
I've bought Talbots pre-loved on Vinted, great quality. Unfortunately, I'm in the Netherlands.... but will be visiting the US in May, so I'll try to shop at a Talbots store. Next is great for EU citizens as well; they ship from inside the EU so we can shop for some of the UK brands too.
I guess we all will shop where we can afford to shop. Many of us in our Senior years love thrifting. At 81 I’m not going to spend a lot of money on any article of clothing.
I'm now 71 and have shopped with Boden since I was 45, so where have you been😅😅 I find they run a little small, and recently the " tongue in cheek" advertising from them has left a lot to be desired. I recently had to contact them ,objecting to their use of the "f" word on a brochure sent through the post. Very tasteless
I find it mixed on line . Some quite aging items but a few lovely pieces. Maybe because I've never been in a store I have a different impression. I'd certainly feel like that with a shop we used to have here called Country Casuals. I always walked straight out buy may have missed the odd good piece. I found them snobby too 😀
@ to be fair I do have a couple of older blazers that I picked up second hand, they are classics. But otherwise no. I wonder if “Casuals” should be a word to avoid in a store name? 😃
At 77 you have no right to tell me where, what when etc. re clothing. I wear what I like and trust me I do not have any sneakers, frumpy clunky footwear that do nothing to make my feet look attractive. I’m so pleased you mentioned your hair, saves me! No excuses please. Oh gosh. Talbots. Surely you jest.
Wow, someone has got their undies in a bunch! Calm down! LOL! Why would you click on this in the first place if you feel so strongly about someone giving their opinion on where to shop? And I'm 74 and welcome the opinions of what other women think. I learn from others...
I think poor Glennis had just trudged home from the garden centre with two bulging carrier bags, put up her aching (but attractive) feet to watch this with a cuppa, and then realised with horror that she'd lost the receipt for all the stuff she'd just bought. All this and a bad hair day too! 😮😅

I love the length of your hair. It looks very feminine ❤
I love Cos ………suits all
Yes another one perfect for us but pricey as well.
Yes you are right re Uniqlo
If you like Talbots and JCrew, I’m wondering if you are able to buy Ann Taylor and Loft in the UK. Similar audience and prices.
We used to get Ann Taylor in Debenhams. Loft ship to UK but I hone in on Loft when I visit USA .
We can order in Canada but if it’s not manufactured in the US we pay duty. Makes it very expensive.
Thanks
Seasalt! Bought breton tops and a raincoat last year. Love them.
Me too
Great advice & style! , my sister and I still work full time, we are in our 60s and we need your channel!! We are style desert lol
Do you have a video on shirts - comfortable, stylish and cool fabrics & colours? Thank you love from New Zealand 🇳🇿 p.S. I have already found a nz store selling the sugar hill sweaters etc
Oh fantastic re Sugarhill. I have a video on styling summer tops
Thank you!
Banana Republic has become way too expensive. When I was college age, young 20s it was a very popular store and affordable. I looked the other day at their site and was shocked at the prices. I didn't see anything under $100 and most were way more than that
Love your videos.
The quilted flowery new trends remind me of garden shop clothing! Won't be wearing them!
There is a J Crewe shop in Eastbourne !
Really! Or is it crew clothing? It's not the same brand. I hope it's J Crew . I'm not far from Eastbourne. Crew clothing is another good shop though.
My local garden centre Van Hage used to do great clothing lines like White Stuff unfortunately it’s been taken over by another GC chain and the clothes are now just as you’ve warned us
It's Nottcuts in my area but I've seen one near Worthing stocking Joules so it's quire piecemeal
I love your ideas but I’m afraid a lot of these stores might be out of my reach price-wise. I’m in the states and have recently found a few things at Chico’s Outlets.
From Denmark; love Boden. ❤
You do have to be selective at Talbots.
I live in the U.S. (Los Angeles, CA), I’ve never heard of clothes being sold at garden centers(I go to several once a week).
Garden centres in Britain are quite different from North America.
Here in Wisconsin, unfortunately, garden centers do sell hideous clothing! :-)
@@garmtpug that's so weird, who would think "i think I'll go to a garden centre to buy clothes!"... rubber boots, rain coat, BBQ apron, gardening gloves, etc...yeah... real clothes..nope!
@@garmtpug who would think to go to a garden centre to buy clothes!!??? Rubber boots, rain coat, BBQ apron, gardening gloves.... but clothes???😂😂😂
@ I was shocked to see them at our local garden center a few years ago. I guess they thought they were going to expand their offerings. 😂😂😂
Nonsense! Buy clothes from the place that YOU like buying clothes from…and Boden is very expensive and comes up small.
Yeah, not really living in the real world
I only buy from Boden unless they’re offering at least 20% off. The quality is good and I find they’re true to size.
You get what you pay for Boden has quality clothing I’ve had for years. I buy less because I buy quality.
"I don't agree" may be a kinder way of saying "Nonsense!".
My gosh! I love your hair. Just as I thought that, you say to ignore your hair. Naw! Looks great. Elegant, even. Oops!
Clothes in a garden centre???? WHY????? I like Boden but everything runs small. Talbots is excellent for blazers. J. Crew has fallen off quality wise but the tissue turtlenecks are excellent. I love M&S. Ralph Lauren and Goielia are too small for me.
Biden runs really small and pricy
I didn't know sea salt or fat face. I am going to order from sea salt. Unfortunately, fat face doesn't ship to Portugal. Only Ireland and US.
Thank you 😀
You can find the odd thing in Zara. H &M used to be good but now EVERYTHING there is black, white or beige. So boring. Talbots was great but no longer in UK.
Boden isn’t here in the U.S. Macy’s, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s and Bealle’s are more popular here in the U.S.
You can find some Boden items at Nordstrom and Boden ships to US, or they did in the past. I assume they have warehouses here.
I always end up with junk at TJs and Marshall’s. I have a friend who’s a real shopper. She finds some good deals. You have to be careful. A lot of their brand names are made for them.
Have you come across Kettlewell in the UK? If so thoughts please.
Overpriced!
Never heard of boden lol
Boden is good but the supply chain is all from China. M&S has a higher quality supply chain.
Horizontal striped sweaters no
I guess we all will shop where we can afford to shop. Many of us in our Senior years love thrifting. At 81 I’m not going to spend a lot of money on any article of clothing.
Yes thrifting has great benefits. I do it too but it's not easy to share as thd audience can't get that item. 😀
I know, right. Why did I buy only 2 things in my 50s frim them. The big bonus is they don't wear out or date. Just in our forever wardrobes.
What nonsense…how about shopping where you can buy the clothes that you like yourself. Boden is very expensive and the sizing is very small.
Another company your subscribers might like is Chicos.
I prefer quirky like Lucy & Yak, dressing our age can be so overrated lol
I have a few dungarees from there abd I like their trousers. I'm a quirky dresser unless I have to be classic. Currently in a USA flag T shirt 😀
Merely walking into a Talbots will age you ten years. It’s not what it used to be.
I was just thinking how much I like your hair, and then you said for us to pardon your hair because you’re in need of a haircut. ?????
Thank you. It’s getting a trim today 😀
At the end of the day this is someone else's opinion .
Move along then. LOL!
Is there a competition I’m not aware of for rudest RUclips comments? I bet you’ll win!
I think poor Glennis had just trudged home from the garden centre with two bulging carrier bags, put up her aching (but attractive) feet to watch this with a cuppa, and then realised with horror that she'd lost the receipt for all the stuff she'd just bought. All this and a bad hair day too! 😮😅
