I finally received my Ifi Zen Stream.
Suddenly we understood how this device works with its connections and different functions (I'm new to the world of streaming...), the sound reproduction is the equivalent of my records... and that even with my better versions in DSD or 24 bits.
This is where this device really shines.
It's true that with Tidal MQA via Denafrips Ares 2, Hegel H190, Focal Aria 926, I'm served to perfection.
You are a bit the reason for my purchase, thank you.
I must say that I was reluctant to come to the world of streaming, considering that it was a regression in terms of sound. I was mistaken.
I compared a DSD version of Patricia Barber, Café Blue on my USB key plugged into the Ifi and the Tidal signal (not even MQA...) and the difference was minimal. I did the same thing with Diana Krall, Turn up the quiet in DSD vs MQA version... I couldn't really tell the two apart!
From now on, the convenience and immense discotheque of streaming will outweigh the minimal sound difference. We got there!

The Ares II does not support MQA. How are you doing this with the Ares II? Myself, to play back a SACD in DSD natively I use a digital breakout box with my Oppo BDP-83 to strip the DSD signal out of the HDMI output to send that native DSD signal to my Ares II via coax, the sound is phenomenal. My CD playback, is also cleaner, I cannot tell the difference in tracks I play on the Oppo vs my 2021 Node which I run through the Denafrips Iris DDC via USB out to the Ares II via coax.

Great review. Really enjoyed it. I have the Node 2 with a SF Line 1 preamp and an Adcom GFA 555. Using the built in dac, it was okay playing wireless, but when I went from a hard drive through the usb port and coax through my SF SFD MKII, it really came alive. Blue OS is the primary reason I went for the Node. It’s very intuitive and just works.

I have the new Node. Usually run it through DAC in my Marantz Ruby CD player, use Node’s DAC only for MQA on Tidal. Two questions. 1 Does the Zen easily stream Qobuz? 2 And if I purchase and install Roon on my iPad am I good to go with the Zen, or does Roon need to reside somewhere other than my iPad?

    • @vilipmak3973
      @vilipmak3973 2 года назад +1

To use Roon, you need to run Roon Core in addition to the Roon Endpoint App on an iOS device like an iPad. Roon Core needs to reside on a "Server" - could be a desktop or laptop computer, could be something like a Linux NUC (Roon Nucleus is an example), could be an Innuos (Zenmini, Zen, Zenith, Statement).
Otherwise, qobuz needs to be supported by the software you use to control the Zen Stream. We'll see what streaming services the upcoming ifi App supports.

Yes - the top USB port can accommodate a formatted drive. The rest will depend on your software. It will interesting to see how ifi structures their app for playback of local files. The Volumio-based web page setup will allow you to catalog music files accessible to the Zen Stream. If you're referring to the Node, it can also be used in the same or similar ways.

I compared it to the Blue Sound Node 2. Hands down the Moon was way better in all regards as far as sound quality. Btw IFI has a new power supply. The Ipower Elite is excellent. It’s replacing higher priced power supplies I used from other manufacturers. I use them on my modem and router. I suggest you give them a try. They put out more amps than than then the little wall wart power supply from ifi which the modem and router need.

Here are my experiences after 1 hour with the device: Set up is indeed a bit confusing. You have to connect first via ethernet and update to the latest software before attempting to connect via wi-fi. The instructions and set up video should certainly be improved. BUT, once it's up and running I can say it's definitely a big improvement over the Bluesound Node 2i in terms of sound quality: clearer and more detailed, with a deeper soundstage, and just more engaging. I'm running the Zen Stream into a Denafrips Ares ii via USB, whereas with the Bluesound Node 2i I was using the coaxial output from the Bluesound. One user left a comment that he thought the USB output from the Zen Stream didn't sound very good but that has not been my experience at all.
I've heard that another significant increase in sound quality can be had by upgrading the stock power supply, either to an ifi product (too bad they don't include a better power supply with the unit), or to a linear power supply. So that's my next project.

Hey Joshua! Obviously feel free to wait for a reply from the creators of a video, but if it helps, I'm actually doing a direct comparison of the Bluesound Node (newest version) and ifi Zen Stream in my own highly sensitive system (DAVE, Mscaler, Focal Utopia, etc). I cannot stress enough that the two outputs on the Zen Stream (USB vs Coax) are VERY different sounding. Note in the video they use the coax out. The coax out on the zen stream is fantastic, and clearly better than the BS Node coax out. The USB, however, is quite bad on the zen stream. One of the worst USB outputs I've heard. The BS Node has a better USB, though neither is spectacular. By better, I mean a blacker background and less digital "glare". Hope this helps!

@@zemessargs Hi Andris. Thanks for sharing your experience. That's quite odd about the USB output sounding bad. My understanding is that the USB with the right DAC should sound the best. I'm basing this understanding from this video by British Audiophile (ruclips.net/video/3tKWWs-OMxw/видео.html). So, hearing that the USB output is bad is disappointing - makes me want to hold off buying the Zen Stream. Have you thought about using something like a Denafrips Iris to turn the signal into an I squared signal before going into your DAC, assuming your DAC is compatible with that? That apparently is the best.

    • @zemessargs

@@joshuaschneck I've thought about it, but am trying to avoid yet another box. I'd be more willing to spend more on an exceptional source streamer rather than add a digital-to-digital in the middle. For what it's worth, I also have a Chord 2go/2yu which has the best USB of the Zen Stream / BlueSound Node / Chord trio - but it's also WAY more expensive. But yeah, I'm bummed too about the Zen's USB. For context, I'd rank them about like this: Zen Coax: A, Chord Coax: A-, BSNode Coax: A-, Chord USB: B+, BSNode USB: C, Zen USB: D. I'm debating myself whether I want to keep the Zen, which has amazing coax performance, esp for that price point, but essentially sacrifice my ability/willingness to ever use USB from it. My alternate choice would be the Chord 2go/2yu, knowing it's the best USB and almost the best coax, but I have to always know I let the slightly better coax go...

I just bought the Node less than a week ago. I wanted a DAC since I didnt have one and didnt want to spend more than $500, I saw the streaming capabilities as a bonus. After getting home I realize, you cannot use the Node as a DAC. I cannot connect my laptop to the Node and play youtube through my stereo because the USB port on the Node is digital output only. I felt a bit cheated as that was the primary purpose. But as I started trying the BlueOS app with a Tidal test subscription, I really like the simplicity and easy access to music through the presets you can add, whereby you can just walk up to the Node and push one of the presets and it instantly starts playing that radio station or Tidal playlist. So I really like it and for the money it is probably a better deal than buying the Zen stream and a separate DAC for the same total budget. But it would be nice to hear how the internal DAC stacks against some external DACs, like for example SMSL M300. Or would the iFi Zen Stream + SMSL M300 sound significantly better than the Node?

Not too many reviews comparing the Node’s streamer section but luckily for you there are quite a few out there comparing it’s DAC. Never tried the M300 but did try quite a few. In my experience, I found it very hard to beat that internal DAC without spending more than $500. Otherwise you’re not really getting “better” but perhaps a sonic signature that you prefer or that suits your system better. For me until I got to a Burson or a Bifrost I can’t say that I saw improvements all around without some compromise.

@@audiorick841 Okay, I never tried any other DACs and frankly my system isnt very developed and my general experience of HIFI niether. For a pure DAC around the $4-500 range I understand that the Chord Mojo is highly regarded but I dont like the look and portability, I want something stationary that doesnt look like a toy. And I feel Bluesound made a much better looking product than the iFi as well. I was hoping to achive Chord Mojo DAC performance with some streaming capability as a bonus, do you have experience with the Mojo to make a comparison to the Nodes DAC?

    • @audiorick841
      @audiorick841 2 года назад +1

@@bingoberra18 I have no experience with the mojo. I read that it is a fairly resolving DAC, The only experience I can share is that I made the mistake to pair an overly resolving DAC with resolving efficent speakers (PS audio Stellar with Tekton DI), it was too harsh on the top end. I had to reconfigure.
All that to say I would also take in consideration the system you have, do you have a very mid and treble oriented amp and speakers. If the case, the mojo might be a bit much. Otherwise if you have a neutral or laid-back gear set up, the mojo might do well. Just a thought.
On the other hand if you need some thing still resolving but a bit more laid-back I find my Modi Multibit and Bifrost are good. I run into an A B configuration the multi bit and the Node DAC. Slight difference but you really have to pay attention. At that price it’s hardly worth investing from Node to Modi. To Bifrost though easier to notice the improvement.
If I needed more top end clarity I would try the mojo if my system was already pretty resolving I would try the Bifrost.

    Great point at 11:58
If there’s one thing that holds the Node back it’s the cheap built in power supply. There are numerous options available to upgrade that shortcoming that really makes the Node rise to another level sound wise. I recently installed one from PD Creative on my Node (N130) It was cost effective, very easy and the sound change is very noticeable which was a win win for me. Does it put it to the level of the Zen? I don’t know as I’ve never heard it but if you’re a fan of ease of use of the BluOS interface and want a one box sub $1K streaming solution the Node is still a wonderful option……notably as it’s currently on sale for $100 off
*Note: My understanding from other user reviews is the iFi Zen Stream no longer ships with the high quality iFi SMPSU and has been replaced by a generic SMPSU instead. I’m sure it will still sound great as the key is not having that built into the unit but the generic SMSPU is likely not as clean as the IFi unit it replaced so a slight degradation in sound might have occurred.

It gave me an opportunity to try to work with Bluesound support for a few months before getting rid of the Bluesound Node and Vault. It is not like Apple support where you simply call. You email Bluesound, then they try to help by trading emails. Of course days goes by when they give up and make an appointment to call you at home. Also I couldn't connect to the ifi zen stream with my phone. Seems to be built for a computer on the same network. With fiber optic so common in many of today's electronics. I’ll have read more about the Zen Stream and watch your review again but I don’t remember hearing either of you mention what phone, tablet or computer application to use for streaming Qobuz, Tidal etc on the Zen. The BlueSound BluOS is second only to Roon in my humble opinion and I haven’t had any issues that you’ve had when using Roon. Maybe this is because I use a Roon Nucleus as both the Roon Core and streamer. It’s connected to my router via Ethernet cable and the Nucleus is connected to my PS Audio GainCell DAC preamp via an AudioQuest carbon USB cable. Sounds wonderful. In fact if you have a Nucleus in the shop hard wire it to a router then connect it via USB to a DAC or integrated amp with an internal DAC. I bet doing this you’re uses with Roon will disappear.

    • @audiorick841

I have a similar set up to you minus the Nucleus +6 other zones. I also had Roon instability issues until I hooked every endpoint to a LAN cable. Even if every end point’s wireless was showing full signal. As fantastic as the bluesound products are, I find that their wireless is not the best. Maybe they need a mesh system like Sonos LOL. And Roon is picky if one endpoint misses a single beat (or data packets should I say), it stops all zones.
Once everything was hooked up to a LAN cable and dedicated Roon server (NUC) no more issue. Even using a Microsoft surface dial for volume control and it never fails.
I have to say that Roon is seriously challenged by the “free” BluOS app. The only difference is that Roon doesn’t tie you to Bluesound/Nad products only.

Thinking about the Gustard too. Im currently running node 2i straight into my naim. X26 pro and Zen stream should offer a nice upgrade judging on the reviews…

Summary: If you do have an external DAC, use Zen. But if you don't have an external DAC, the Bluesound Node is a great option that won't break the bank.

Great video! Any thoughts regarding the Zen Stream compared to the Lumin streamers? I was considering the Lumin U1 Mini but the Zen sounds like a viable alternative for a much cheaper price?

The Zen Stream is not as good as the U1 mini. But it might be good enough. However, if you have the means, spend more.

An external power supply for the Node 2i made a huge difference in my system. Even using the internal DAC. The sound just bloomed. When the new Node gets the 3rd party upgrade available I will get one and move the 2i to my office system,

@@geraldgreene5563 PS is built into Node - so, any better PS would require either replacing or bypassing the internal ps. Essentially it is not worth it. Buy a better streamer.

Well, It is your fault you guys, I bougth this unit and listen to it for these last few months....coming from Sono lended to me, it is night & day , it is as you mentioned a physical improvement, but you better have the amp and the rest of the system up to the level of this unit to realise it. Thanks for your video, actually the only one reliable I found, I am a happy camper, it is what I was after.

I'm watching two years later, were you talking about the NEO streamer?

Great to see a really good way to get into streaming without breaking the bank for something that will probably be obsolete and worthless in a few years. But I’m guessing that the younger generation that insists on being paid in Bitcoin doesn’t want to be eavesdropped on by their devices.
