Just like their parents from generations ago ours carry on that same migratory lifestyle. Call em what you will, we call them Steelhead because we also have landlocked resident rainbows that are not migratory. This helps us distinguish between the two variations. Just like in the south they call bluegill by bream and crappie by specs. The word "Steelhead" has no scientific recognition at all. It's just a common name used to describe a fish. You can try to spin the definition around to mean they have to go to salt water, that's on you and your opinion. But the word is open to interpretation and as such it can be both. We here in the Great lakes will continue to call our rainbows that migrate Steelhead and that's just how it is.

AP! I've been fishing Lake Michigan salmon from Muskegon for 20 years and have only caught ONE hatchery fish. They're pretty much all natty babyyyyy
