I am joined by Shar Dundred for a cooperative playthrough of Dawn of War II. This sequel is a stark divergence from the original entry and expansions of the build & destroy variety. Instead, the players choose the units to be used prior to beginning a mission, cannot build new units once the mission begins, and has only limited reinforcement options.

Jay is on the correct track there: ogryns are too dumb to fall to Chaos, but they will just keep following the unit commanders that do fall to Chaos out of puppy loyalty

Was going to the comments to mention this. From what I know you are 100% correct. From what I gather from playing Warhammer Darktide, Ogryn are not smart and won’t normally down the path of Chaos, but they are extremely loyal creatures. In Darktide the lore I have been told is that when their best friends or commanders go down the path of Chaos, they trust their now-fallen friends too much to leave and become victims to the whims of their now chaos-bounds buddies.

In any case they are "inhuman beasts" as someone from a different franchise would say so they are just tolerated for usefulness

Puppy loyalty, or whoever is in charge of giving them their daily food, as shown in the siege of vraks.

This was probably the hardest mission you two had so far in Retribution, but it worked out in the end.
Glad Jay agrees with me on how awesome the autocannon sounds! They are a nice all-round weapon too - great against infantry and decent against vehicles.
Ah yes I remember liking that Heavy Bolter weapon Shar got for Merrick. No setup or tear down times is a lot more handy than it sounds since you can quickly start suppressing enemies. Coupled with a firing line of Autocannon Heavy Weapons squads and Stormtroopers, enemy infantry stand no chance.

Said so before, ogryns were humans forced to adapt to high gravity world(s), which did a number on their constitution and intellect(they were first in line for muscles but last for brains).
Never insult the autocannon, just think on the ones we have in our world, both mounted on ifv and attack helis and used as ww2 main guns for most tanks, that's between 20 and up to 75mm in caliber.
To the mission at hand, eldar have an interesting dialogue here:
Kayleth(the autarch hero, think eldar generals/field marshals in rank, usually have taken at least 3 aspect warrior paths in their long careers, as shown what she can use) discusses their failure sofar, upon which Ronahn(ranger hero) suggests they strike here, kill them all then dutifully wait for the transmission. She commends him on the brilliance of it - accomplished 3 things at once, probable success, something called ingress/egress and one more thing i forgot.
Veldoran(warlock hero, think combat psyker) remarks how the ranger learnt alot during his time running. Upon which ranger claps back with this gem: do remember your ancestry, veldoran. All eldar alive today are those who ran(the fall of eldar empire and birth of chaos god slaanesh)".
To explain a bit, they belong to alaitoc, which is considered as the strictest of the eldar craftworlds(the no-nonsense, rules to the letter kind of life), and at same time is the craftworld with the most eldar walking the outcast(ppl who seek freedom from mentioned rules) path. Those are represented by the rangers, who while away from home craftworld, do still retain links with by providing scouting, gathering information from outside and warning of stuff etc.
Edit to add: orks have a conversation about learning of kyras being on typhon: nailbrain(the mech hero) informs the crew that he's (supposedly) alone there. Bluddflag is incredulous, wondering why and where are his "mob". Nailbrain asks: we still goin' ta kill 'im? To which kpt Bluddflag answer slightly dejectedly: yes, we go. Maybe we get lucky and it's an ambush or something". They also got a funny interaction for the next optional mission, which I'll share next time.

Oh I see what happened with the enemy tanks. They have their 'To Whom it May Concern' ability and used it to great effect.

The Autocannon is a bit weird. It's technically a soft anti-everything weapon, because it deals anti-everything damage (same damage type as the Leman Russ's default cannon, I think?) with a small splash. This means it does limited damage to vehicles, and a lot of damage to clumped up infantry. Several autocannons together will put out as much anti-vehicle and a lot more anti-infantry than a lascannon, but it's a bit of an investment. They're okay if you like drawing the enemy into the teeth of your set up squads.
Remote detonators were massively nerfed in this expansion, which sucks and kinda means that all of that investment into Merrick's will isn't super worth it. He works better as a ranged weapon beatstick with some durability, and good firepower, unfortunately. Not to exciting. You can still make use of infiltrate, of course, but it's not as good as what Cyrus could once achieve.
And yeah, Ogryns are not really 'smart' enough to be 'seduced' by Chaos. They can still fall to Chaos (and many do) for other reasons though. Some just fall alongside their fellows. Some are so unhygienic that they just get sick and fall to Nurgle by contracting things like Nurgle's rot. Some are very aggressive by nature, and end up falling to Khorne without really realising it by just being really angry and getting angrier and angrier till they're just constantly angry and want to kill things. Some are born on non-Imperial worlds where Chaos worship is less rare. Some are kidnapped and experimented on till driven mad, or broken into service of Chaos.

Nah, that title belongs to another, one Endryd Harr, the Riven Hound, loyalist World Eater from horus heresy and one very very angry marine without the butcher's nails most of his erstwhile brothers got.

I’m digging Jay’s fisting arc. From disliking Bern’s fist to liking it. Can’t wait to see where it goes!
