- HOW TO KILL JAPANESE BEETLES ORGANICALLY
Japanese beetles are a small bug that is a big threat to hundreds of different species, it is one of the major insect pest in the Eastern United States. Japanese beetles can do monumental damage to crops each year. You can identify the Japanese beetles by their metalic looking blue-green heads, copper backs, tan wings and about 1/2 inch in length. These japanese beetles emerge from the soil as adult beetles and begin feeding on around 300 different kinds of plants, usually roses, beans, grapes, raspberries, etc. Around June is when this starts happening,. IBe watching for sheletonized leaves, meaning only the veins of the leaves are remain. I suggest many ways to get rid of japanese beetles, including hand picking them off of plants and flowers, using neem oil, using a dropcloth method , orgainc insecticides, something i call the fruit cocktail method, but what i failed to suggest is using Geraniums as a bait plant that will attract the Beetles and allow your more expensive plants to be protected as you kill the beetles on the geraniums. Also if your roses bushes are swarmed with japanese beetles, nip off the buds of the rose bush until the threat has passed. You can introduce Milky Spore in to your lawn to help control grub worms that become japanese beetles for up to 10 years. Also try companion planting garlic, rue, or tansy near your plants that you want to save, be sure that your plant is companion friendly with the suggested plants. Last but not least you can try attracting parastic wasps to do the work for you, in this case the wasp would be very beneficial as a japanese beetle insect killer. Along those same lines, you can drench your turf grass with parastic nematodes (heterorhabditis species) to control the larvae, that turn into grub worms and eventually japanese beetles. Very last organic method i can think of at the moment to organically kill japanese beetles is to mix 2 tablespoons of baby shampoo into 1 gallon of water and apply this solution on to your lawn per 1000 square feet, during late spring or fall when the beetles are still grub worms and once you spray the lawn the grub worms will surface to the top of the soil, once the grub worms surface i usually attract more birds by throwing out a few pieces of bread on the lawn to attract the birds to come and eat the bread and the grubs.

I used that organic 3 in 1 spray - fungicide etc that you held up. It worked. I sprayed my flowers and the next day I found a pile of dead Japanese beetles on the ground near the flowers I sprayed. I found a couple during the day and they were dying. I happened to have 2 bottles of that on hand and I just want to share this. It works!!
SHORT VERSION ....fruit cocktail fermented for a week in can. Put can in small pail with dish soap and water. Bugs are attracted and drown in soapy water solution. I am going to hang a small bucket in a tree so dogs/pets won’t get into it.
THANK YOU! 💜
I have been following your other channel for awhile... Til you brought it up a week couple weeks ago I didn't know you were here... I'm a farmer and I know a lot of stuff chemical wise for weed control and bug control but I have to admit I'm learning from you... Yes I have been binge watching this channel the last couple days now... Lol... Can't help it... I may be 61 years old but I still learn daily from people like you and RUclips... Thanks for all the tips Rebel...
You are just the best...love the "baby" shampoo for kids and dogs...even the extension office lady could not tell me where those beetles came from! Good work!
thank you, see Japanese beetle / gurb worm life cycles, to have a better understanding of where they come from, aka hide, lol, hope this helps.
I had no luck with Garden Safe Neem in 2019. I later found out it is not 100% cold pressed Neem. This year trying Neem Bliss. Much more potent and solidifies to Carmex like under 60 degrees. I mix with Dr Bronners Castille Soap to break tension then warm water. Peppermint or Lavender Bronners works well. I have peaches so Lavender is more effective on Peach Moths. Also, only buy enough Neem for 1 season for freshness. A 16oz bottle goes a long ways! I use this concoction on everything now! A light Spring dose is 1 Tbls of Castille to 1 Tsp Neem per gallon. Increase as you are comfortable. Again, stir Castille and Neem in a bowl until creamy, add some warm water, stir, then full amount of water. This stuff clogs sprayers so do hot water flush afterwards. I spray Peaches every 2 weeks after petal drop and fruit set (or more after rains.). Capture test of Japanese Beetles after Neem/castille spray -- 1 hour dead. I even gave them the leaf they were munching. No interest, crawled away.
Very helpful. I'm hopeful and will give your recipe a try!
Yes Grapes are a favorite of theirs as well. We're over near Rock Hill and fight them every year. If you hold a bowl of water right under them and just bump them they'll roll right on in it. Make your rounds with that bowl and hopefully the vine or whatever they're raiding can recover. Great video👍🏾!
Some people are so rude. Thanks for all the helpful info, it's appreciated
your welcome
Well, here you are trying to give people helpful information and FOR FREE, and instead of people thanking you they say "get to the point" unbelievable to me, so yeah I'm going to speak up about that. I'm sick and tired of rude people, sick and tired of spoiled people. Maybe those same demanding people should go try living in a country where the internet priveledges are not the same or free. Thanks again for your helpful info
@@kendall00012 100% agree... The camera is shakey... Get to the point... All that is uncalled for... The man is trying to help people out and they nit pick him... Sorry but it sickens me how rude people really are in this world
57 RED ROOSTER that is exactly right. He’s offering free advice, some people are so spoiled and so demanding. It does make you sick. We have life here better than many other countries why can’t people just be appreciative and say thanks. Grrrrrr
what is the shelf life of milky spore powder? i found the lost box in the shed, years old, expensive error. is it still useable?
Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video and share this information. I have a major JB war going on in my yard. You’ve given me the tools to fight them. Thank you.
Your welcome, i might also recomend Milky Spore too, for your lawn and shrub areas :-) hope this helps, let me know how it goes, thanks
I’m doing this first thing in the morning. My pole beans !!!
Mine too...I have caught and drowned at least 30 in 2 days...
100% love the smile at "also kills spider mites"
Hmm. I'm gonna have to try the fruit cocktail and soapy water. Thanks for the tip!
Our ducks are super helpful the grass and my Rose's are groomed daily !
Ducks eat Japanese beetles? I’d never heard that. Wonderful. I heard they eat garden slugs.
when there are so many that soapy water cannot do a whole back yard vineyard and neem oil just does not work... 7 dust... works wonders for me. not organic but nothing else ive tried thats organic and obtainable to me has worked.
Thank you so much!!!! My mom and I are so afraid of beetles and we’re looking for a way to prevent them. We are getting a pool this summer, and want to make sure we can have fun without the bugs. Luckily we have no plants where they can feast and don’t have to worry about them!
Try some Milky Spore too, hope this helps
My grandma did this method for years on their farm it really worked! Fast forward 40 years later I started using fruit cocktail and I see now how right she was!
Can u explain that method to me please? I’m a little confused. Do I fill up the bucket and just put the fermented can of fruit in there?
Man I had a few come into my semi truck and ugh I had these annoying bugs I use dawn the blue dish soap and just clean a few times a day. Is there another natural home remedy you guys use?
Great ideas! Worth a try, as squishing daily is a chore.
They are devouring my Morning Glory's! AHHH! Thanks for this, great help 👍
I like to fry these on those hand held bug zappers. It stinks and draws an audience (flies) and they land on the zapper and get smoked which draws more. Sometimes I use my pocket torch, hella satisfying hearing them pop and smoke.
I'm experimenting with planring four o'clock flowers under my roses. So far, it seens to work.
Wow, yes, when they don't check what is getting from plants etc..thanks for the tips, cheers
I don't quite understand using the fruit cocktail. I understand fermenting fruit cocktail & filling a bucket with water with baby shampoo. But exactly how do you set it up? You mentioned a brick. Do you set the fruit cocktail on a brick in the bucket? I am assuming you don't put the fruit cocktail in the water.
Also, what else is attracted to the fermented fruit cocktail?
Yes, placed the brick into the bucket, Place the fruit cocktail can with the lid missing on top of the brick, filled The bucket with soapy water, it’s very similar to Using soapy water to drowned fleas, and having a candle or light for heat to draw the fleas to their watery death. Fly’s May be drawn to the Sugary fermenting fruit aka fruit cocktail. Hope this helps
Organic over chemicals any day. Appreciate your thoughts on controlling the Japanese Beetles.

Thanks so much Lonely Prepper
I put dish soap and water mix cause it was getting out of control. OUT OF CONTROL. I am a Organic grower but sometimes, you just have to do what you gotta do :(
They stay away from the area you spray, so I spray the whole bush, i’m gonna check the rose now cause it’s 8am.
@@MintyyIsOdd Yep I think every beetle in my neighborhood is on my one rose bush. Very frustrating.
Cherry Void
Yep, there’s other rose bushes at other people’s front yards but when I look at theirs only 1 or 2 beetles. Then I look at my bush. BEETLES. EVERYWHERE.
@@MintyyIsOdd Same here I've never seen so many, flowers packed with them. They have caused SO much damage and what should be a nice blooming bush, is empty buds and stripped leaves. What spray do you use? I'm getting some today.
Its truly devastating to see the damage.
I have a cat. He goes after and kills the Beatles. Unfortunately my plants are suffering damage and thank you for this video
I have two acres of lawn how much milky spore would it take to cover that much? Ives seen it in the stores and it’s quite expensive
Milky Spore was expensive forty years ago too. If my memory serves me,when you use Milky Spore the larvae eats it and dies. So the Milky Spore is repurposed so to speak. With each larvae eating it,it’s a cycle from year to year. If you could afford to apply the M Spore in an area you prize then eventually it will spread further and further each year. Read info on the container to make sure I’m correct. It has been many years since I used it. Good luck!
How much dish soap per gallon of water? Assuming you are "surrounding" the can of fermented fruit cocktail in the pail with the treated soapy water.
I use seven dust and DE. Both those products have tripled in price
I'll tell ya I was getting ready to scream first then treat!
I have buckets out for rain catchment and the Beatles go to drink and drown🙌.
I thought it was by chance but I used all the water up and with new rain more Beetles dead. I'm so pleased. I was worried about mosquito larvae but no sign. Give it a try.
JO JO IN VT 💕😄
I have a bird bath, found some drowned.
Good coverage. Can you do a DIY of your idea of the fruit jar, etc. I can't seem to picture it. 🤔😏
I will try!
What is the name of that beautiful rose?Great video.
I'm in Canada and we have those annoying Japanese beetles here to. Idk if it's true but I herd if you kill one say by stepping on it will attract more do u know if that's true? I will try your method this year I'm at the point I feel like ripping out the rose bush, but I won't.
You are right in that squishing them in that it releases (if it's the female) the sex pheromone and will attract other males. The best and safe method I have found is to go out early in the morning with a 2 gal.bucket with a couple of inches of water and a table spoon of dish washing detergent to break the surface of the water. The beetle are not as active early on. Put the bucket under the beetles and shake the plant where they are clustered. Their defense is to fall down into the grass and you will drown them in the soapy water. It's a daily task, but works.
I found a few of these in my garden turnips and okra. So nothing eats them? Birds, Dragonflies, Mantis?
Used neem oil with very little luck. Using bag-a-bug now but too early to tell. Those pesky beetles love my butterfly bush and burning bush.
Thanks for the tips! Would this work with any type of canned fruit? Or does it have to specifically be fruit cocktail?
It has to be generic fruit cocktail from aldis…for whatever reason they won’t touch walmart or sams club brand
😂😅🤣@@2cthetruth
wow this is actually pretty interesting!! So OK I subbed here and going to the other videos!!
thank you
japanese beetles are my number one fear and its summertime,,,im going to hibernate inside my house to avoid these things.
Milky spore is an organic solution to the beetles, is long lasting
agreed
Have you ever tried to use wood vinegar as a natural pesticide? It is a natural pesticide popular in Asia but not in North America. I never used it but I am curious
I haven't , i have heard of it, i am not sure if i also mentioned Milky Spore in this video, 1 treatment and it's good for at least 10 years to get rid of grub worms, Japanese Beatles. :-) Paenibacillus popilliae is a soil-dwelling, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium. It is responsible for a disease of the white grubs of Japanese beetles.
Thank you so much for the video, it helped so much!
Thank you for the tip of using Milky Spore, that stuff is amazing!!! I have had no grub worms this year or Japanese Beetles! Thank you , Thank you, Thank you!
My mom has a Rose of Sharon bush that these devil beetles like to destroy. However bees also like this bush, how do I keep from attracting the bees to the mixture?
Bees are very important to human life ! I could write a huge article on the matter, lol. But I recommend using neem oil on the Rose of Sharon and if there is any lawn, Grass, turf grass near this Rose of sharon, put down some Milky Spore on the turf grass, to help stop the Japanese beetle / gurb worm life cycles, be sure to put this out at the correct time (season and temp) and follow the directions on the bag :-) hope this helps,
They destroy my Rose of Sharon every year
Diatemaceous earth works good. Just have to reapply after rain. Its pretty cheap too.
They are a big problem with my plants in Wisconsin
Very important info u shared here bro
It’s July here southern Ontario and I have Japanese beetles there are so many never had them before. My sunflowers are so tall but no heads yet. The beetles are putting holes on the leaves of them, what to do? I want to get Uber control before I get the heads. I also have tomato plants no damage yet to them. I don’t want to us chemicals in my plants I have kids and pets. Any advice ? Thanks I have a lawn company going to spray in August for my lawn for the larva
It's my first year gardening. I just moved to a large property and planted 5 fruit trees. These guys a devouring the leaves. I did a treatment of milky spore in the lawn. How soon can I reapply it. The packaging says 4 times a year but I want to be agressive.
Good video on these little beetles...thanks for sharing...Came and bussed your channel from #greenbaywacky
A little confused about the fruit cocktail one… So we just dumped a whole can into the water or we have it on top and they fall in to the water? 🤔
Great info, do you know how to get rid of Geico lizards ?
my beetles are just a dark brown they come out at night and eat my sunflower plants no skeletons bc there is nothing at all left to the plants , just totally eaten
try some Milky Spore
thanks i used some soapy water which the beetles didn't like but the problem then became that it was hot out and the plants died it seems the soapy water blocked the leaves from breathing which they needed to do over 80 degrees. thank you for the suggestion appreciated !
Japanese beetles have unmistakeable emerald green. I know the brown bug you're talking about, many were released by universities and they're currently raging and pillaging.
thanks for the information it's good to know how to deal with them
Thank you
So it is the Japanese beetle that destroyed my roses I thought it was fungal. The leaves turn yellow with brown spots. Also this Spring and early summer rain, rain, and more rain. My poor Roses looks horrible I can't even look at them without feeling bad.
Same here, I have a rose bush and they have done so much damage I'm worried it won't recover. They seem really bad this year.
@@cherryvoid5238 Every morning and evening I go out to all my garden with a cup of soapy water and flick the bugs into the water/ Apparent they are lousy swimmers I haven't seen as much recently. I'm hoping I'm getting them under control without pesticides. There are still some around but few and far between. My husband thinks that the season might have something to do with it. July heat but I still going bug hurting every morning and evening.
@@cqammaz53 same here and I am seeing less each time. Finally some roses are emerging too~! I know my neighbors must think I'm crazy lol
So what's wrong with seven dust? Japanese beetles hate that stuff. Got rid of 95% of ours and we had them bad.
Awesome!! Any tips on getting rid of those pesky wood bore bees?
have you tried the carpenter bee traps? Also try plugging the holes during the fall months where they are boring, also you can set up something that makes lots of vibration noise where they are boring, like putting a vibrating solar mole trap near them, or play loud music near that area too, that will usually distrub them enough to make them move, Also try spraying some Citrus, (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit) or tea tree oil on the area, the bees will not like the citrus oil, or citrus spray you mix up, also Almond oil works to repel carpenter bees. If you don't care about using chemicals, there are lots of solutions, let me know and i will tell you those too handi.

Awesome tips. Thanks my friend 👍
A long time ago somebody told me to stick a mothball in the holes and then plug them up with aluminum foil It got rid of
them😊 Of course I did this before they came to burrow back in
Spray the wood down with WD -40 and they will leave.
Plant a Rose of Sharon, they prefer them to roses. Or anything else it seems.
Great info! (Better to show us than tell us.). 👍👍👍👍👍
I thought Japanese beetles look like lady bugs. We have beetles in Mo, that look like lady bugs but are bigger and bite hard, one has made me sick leaving my forehead swollen with a gross bite that spread to my neck and scalp. I have bern feeling very sick.
Sorry to hear that. Get well soon.
sixpackbinky That sounds like Asian Lady Beetles. They look a lot like Ladybugs, but can bite and will try to get inside your home when the weather gets cold.
This video would be so much better if you reduced the video to 3 minutes. There's a lot of unnecessary but friendly chit chat and repetition.
I like your fruit cocktail idea. A photo of lots of dead beetles in the container next to the fruit cocktail can would have been a super ending.
Check out how quick and to the point Laura of Garden Answer is.
JBs are really bad this year. Thanks for sharing!
How do I keep them from inserting larva into the grass?
You can't stop them, but you can treat your yard with Milky Spore or nematodes.
More transgenderism studies in Pakistan will solve most every problem.
Seven dust works too
If I use the neem oil on the tree will the fruits be poisoned?
Neem oil is practically non-toxic to birds, mammals, bees and plants. Neem oil is slightly toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Azadirachtin, a component of neem oil, is moderately toxic to fish and other aquatic animals. It is important to remember that insects must eat the treated plant to be killed. I have only heard about some rare crazy cases, where people drank neem oil, and etc, here are a few links from the American Journal - www.ajnr.org/content/31/7/E60
medind.nic.in/ibv/t08/i1/ibvt08i1p56.pdf
The severity of symptoms was dose dependent.
Exact toxicity level doses for humans are not
known. aka don't drink it, lol.
I feel that Monsanto's Weed Killer (ROUND UP) is far more dangerous, California is making them put a cancer warning label on the products sold in California, starting very soon.
hope this was helpful.
Isn’t neem oil toxic to bees?
great video
Glad you enjoyed it
I cut all my roses down- no leaves or blooms, but they skeletonized my ornamental cherry!!!!
Good video! Keep it up!
I've got to try this
:-) Let me know, thanks
Great tips, thank you.
Birds and spiders. I see birds in my yard daily catching them. But I guess it’s not their favorite. Lol
they love grape leaves too!
Do beetle bug traps work?
They do work, my sister kills hundreds of beetles with them. BUT They also attract more beetles to your property. Not really the results you want.
I put them on the outskirts of my property to draw them away . They do work great.
Where would I find neem oil
Reena Jennhatton --Amazon has it. That's where I bought it. They sell different size bottles. Shop for the best deal.
Amazon, wal-mart, lowes, home depot, anywhere online, hope this helps.
agreed!
nice video like thanks
They say to pick them off but as soon as I approach the grapevine that they are eating, they fly away.
Early morning and right before dark. They don’t move much.
Great video thanks!!!
That's my biggest problem in my backyard.
Shark stick vacuum then let them die in the the vacuum in the heat or dump them in soapy water
Thats the only reason I would buy Fruit Coctail. Because I got so much of it in my ratios in VITENAM I can't even stand the look at it!😒
Apply Milky Spore In The soil
Mine just fly away when I shake.
Thanks

I am rather suspicious of that spray you advertise. Sounds like another chemical that is marketed as "organic", which is an unregulated word and anyone can use that word. So I would rather stick with the Neem oil and soapy water idea.
