I remember this video, this message was so important back then and like you said that this message is so relevant today. These were the east coast rappers talking about Self Destruction there is a video with west coast rappers talking about the very same thing the name of the song is We're All In The Same Gang. I loved hip hop back in the eighties but now not. I loved X Klan and Public Enemy KRS One and Ms Melody When NWA came out I was done with hip hop.

When did this song come out? Never heard it. I used to listen to the old school rap. Rap took a different turn later on, and I don't care for it anymore. This has a great message. I wish more people had taken it to heart, regardless of race. I know quite a few white youngsters who try to live the thug life. I'm going to look up the song and share it on my facebook.

This was the song (along with its West Coast equivalent "We're All In The Same Gang") that changed the face of Hip-Hop: Not only did it unite various rappers - (in order:) KRS-ONE, Delite, Kool Moe Dee, M.C. Lyte, Daddy-0 & Wise of Stetsasonic, D-Nice, Ms. Melodie, Doug E. Fresh, Just Ice, Heavy D, Fruit-Kwan of Stetsasonic and Chuck D and Flavor Flav of Public Enemy - with a very positive message to our youth, but, after its release, "The Powers That Be" decided to push Gangsta Rap or songs that promoted "Jinglin'" or battling and killing one another and no longer allow any song with a positive message to hit the airwaves! By the way, the samples (by D-Nice) were of songs relevant to the artist speaking at the time. Big Daddy Kane and others were also featured in the video.

    • @KelzKelz

It didn't change hip hop, it was warning us where hip hop.was going as well as life because they imitate each other. You heard Chuck D said we got to keep our self in checks or else its self destruction.

Im a 50 year old white guy who has raised my children to value character over race or religion. All my brothers come in many colors. I love them all the same. All or blood is the same color. All of us have hearts and souls. Damn the division. We are all family in Gods eyes.

MRM, don't let the haters discourage you, continue to do you and be open to all kinds of music, whether it be rap, rock, country or whatever. As far as positive messaging in rap, you kind of answered your question. When 'gangsta' rap first started to catch on, there was still a balance within the hip hop genre, but the industry realized that it could be marketed as the more rebellious form of music to a younger audience (roughly around the same time that 'grunge' upended the rock genre).
