A few words about this masterpiece:
Brahms began composing this piece in 1854 and finished it in 1876. The reasons for delaying finishing it are probably two. First, Brahms' self-critical fastidiousness, and secondly, the expectation from Brahms' friends and the public that he would continue "Beethoven's inheritance" and produce a symphony of commensurate dignity and intellectual scope, an expectation that Brahms felt he could not fulfill easily in view of the monumental reputation of Beethoven.
The premiere of this symphony, conducted by the composer's friend Felix Otto Dessoff, occured on November 4, 1876.

Brahms spent 20 years to write this symphony, listen to it for 45 minutes its worth a living
And spent two weeks writing the 4th which is sooo much better
@@maelperron_guerra4946 Listen again to the 2 magnificent central movements of the first
2nd 12:43
3nd 22:12
And the symphony would often be called Beethoven’s 10th in its first performances because this symphony was thought to be a continuation of Beethoven’s symphonic legacy at first.
@@galahadthreepwood i find them rather boring. nothing special really.
@austin M since when do i have to write symphony myself before i am allowed to find a symphony rather boring? before i make a movie myself i have to like every movie that exists? LOL
This is just...
Perfect.
I love reading the score while I listen.

Yeah just omit the fourth movement
Not the hero we deserved, but the hero we needed
First time in my life I hear a conductor who conducts the 1st movement's allegro as a true *allegro*. To my greatest surprise he is Karl Bohm, who was, in many cases, considerably slower then his colleagues. Thank you for the post !
Exactly my thoughts. And so little pf traditional ritenuto corners. Sirprising
That second movement made me feel an emotion I've never experienced. Amazing composer
yeah especially the Oboe part
6:50 goosebumps
It is such a gift and education for aspiring players, composers and conductors to hear orchestral music with follow along scores! Thank you!
the first flutist is taking so much liberty with playing high notes that brahms deemed impossible and i honestly love it!! it’s great to update pieces to fit the theoretical modern narratives of composers based on modern instruments
34:46 Dvorak cello concerto
Joy Long Chan lol should be Dvorak copying Brahms
@@nobots7709 a little tip of the hat for sure.
0:07 Movement One (Spares you seven seconds of waiting:))
Bean Sprout thx
Those 7 second are important though
If you can't wait 7 seconds for a symphony to start, looks like seeing one live is out of your league.
Thanks. When I listen to this symphony another 514 times, I'll have saved one hour! :)
This was the symphony I first heard played by a major orchestra, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, many years ago. I was only about 13 and it made such an impression it started my appreciation of great music - literally a life changing moment! Thanks for the upload of this great performance.
2:14 i think thats the most beautiful melody in all of classic/music
t0mcc that part with the oboe solo sounds so sad...it's like all hope is gone.
Now the Allegro section of the first movement is my favourite part of this symphony. Am I alone in seeing a resemblance in it, and Paul Dukas' scintillating "Sorcerer's Apprentice"? They're both written in the same 6/8 metre, with the same tempo and rhythm.
@@timothythorne9464 Yeah the exposition is insanely good. It has such a violent passion and rhythm and it sounds great
It's good, but even Philip Glass has written better ones!
Really a magnificent performance! Karl Boehm is not perhaps an "inspired" conductor, but he follows the score scrupulously and draws wonderful tone from an orchestra that has wonderful tone to begin with, and he has the great gift of letting the written music dictate his interpretation rather than *vice versa*. It's entirely fitting to use this performance for a video in which the score itself is the visual, since the performance sticks so closely to the score (without losing personality or natural flexibility).
Beautiful comment.

Thank you, jenny. I know next to nothing about music, but I love this piece. Seeing the notation that invokes the sound is very enlightening.
Dude thank you so much. We have to learn the allegro non troppo and adagio part for a festival so listening to this and adding the sheet music really helps with reading the music.
Like Schumann's works, namely the piano quartet, the constant harmonic twists and turns fitted into the traditional sonata structure, like an intricate yet perfect puzzle, as displayed here, tend to go over the head of an inattentive listener. He may not have been as melodic as other composers, but he sure as hell was harmonic.
¡ MUCHAS GRACIAS !
Brilliant to be able to follow along with the score! Thank you so much.
The last Movement seems to be inspired not only by Beethoven's 9th, i also hear Schubert's "Great" C Major Symphony and Mozart's Jupiter Symphony in it.
31:32 Ode to joy 2
Best part
the heavy use of timpanis may be inspired by Schumann's second symphony.
The opening in the last movement is emotional

meh. not really,
@@modestoney1577 Its a bit boring tbh
@@jackminto7062 You have to listen carefully. As a critic once said about Brahms's music, its charms are not democratic.
The first and fourth movements are really great. I can understand if some people find 2 and 3 boring.

CODA (C minor - C major)
Sinfonia impressionante.
wonderful video! Thank you. These score videos are extremely useful :)
Thank you so much! I really appreciate what you do!
It's my favourite piece of music from any genre. I've got this on CD somewhere. Brisker opening than most, but all in all a tremendous performance.
Check out Seiji Ozawa with the Seito Kinen orchestra at the BBC proms late 80's. Breathtaking
Thanks for uploading!
Epic opening of a superb work

My favourite part.

Thanks for the upload. Some slight audio problems at the end.
That third movement tho!!!
increible, te mereces un premio, esta muy bueno
One of the few performances I've heard where the first movement is played as a genuine ALLEGRO. So many recordings of this work take the first movement at a lackluster MOLTO MODERATO and the musical line constantly sags and breaks. The Giulini version of this movement comes in at a glacial, unsustainable 19 minutes. Kudos to Bohm for an exciting, powerful opening movement that doesn't drag all over the floor in some misjudged attempt at profundity. Brahms' music is already profound - just follow his instructions.
Poor quality towards the end; clicks and interference, otherwise superb.
At least, some of the clicks near the end, are on time! :P
it's possible correct this noise with click pop plugin (izotope) or adobe audition

I still get disturbed by the Ode to Joy thing.
I am thrilled by the effect of the tempo of the first movement. Does anyone else find the third movement too fast? The middle section comes out alright but the pizz. cello in the A section is just a little too busy for my taste.
Wow! Brahms really brought it home AND knocked it out of the park with his first symphony! This is CLEARLY Beethoven's 10th symphony! 😀😀😀😀

I don't undestand very well Brahms music. Could anyone help me?
(It happened to me with Stravinsky and now I like his music.)
I didn’t understand it at all but after learning a bit of history his music finally (kinda) made sense.
Brahms was thought to be the inheritor of Beethoven’s greatness. So, this symphony is kind of like his homage to Beethoven; he uses motifs which he expands, syncopation, and even the four note motif of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 (there’s a lot of heavy use of the motif from 7:15 to 8:24).
Watching the score multiple times also helped. I was able to point out the motifs that he expanded on, as well as the tiny nuances that might not be as noticeable if it was played in the background.
Yeah Brahms is a really difficult composer to understand, but after you finally get him, it’s a really satisfying aha moment
@@AP47735 Thank you for the response, I didn't see it until now sorry. :/
