And the symphony would often be called Beethoven’s 10th in its first performances because this symphony was thought to be a continuation of Beethoven’s symphonic legacy at first.
@austin M since when do i have to write symphony myself before i am allowed to find a symphony rather boring? before i make a movie myself i have to like every movie that exists? LOL
First time in my life I hear a conductor who conducts the 1st movement's allegro as a true *allegro*. To my greatest surprise he is Karl Bohm, who was, in many cases, considerably slower then his colleagues. Thank you for the post !
Really a magnificent performance! Karl Boehm is not perhaps an "inspired" conductor, but he follows the score scrupulously and draws wonderful tone from an orchestra that has wonderful tone to begin with, and he has the great gift of letting the written music dictate his interpretation rather than *vice versa*. It's entirely fitting to use this performance for a video in which the score itself is the visual, since the performance sticks so closely to the score (without losing personality or natural flexibility).

the first flutist is taking so much liberty with playing high notes that brahms deemed impossible and i honestly love it!! it’s great to update pieces to fit the theoretical modern narratives of composers based on modern instruments
t0mcc that part with the oboe solo sounds so sad...it's like all hope is gone. Now the Allegro section of the first movement is my favourite part of this symphony. Am I alone in seeing a resemblance in it, and Paul Dukas' scintillating "Sorcerer's Apprentice"? They're both written in the same 6/8 metre, with the same tempo and rhythm.
The last Movement seems to be inspired not only by Beethoven's 9th, i also hear Schubert's "Great" C Major Symphony and Mozart's Jupiter Symphony in it.
Sinfonia impressionante.
Like Schumann's works, namely the piano quartet, the constant harmonic twists and turns fitted into the traditional sonata structure, like an intricate yet perfect puzzle, as displayed here, tend to go over the head of an inattentive listener. He may not have been as melodic as other composers, but he sure as hell was harmonic.
This was the symphony I first heard played by a major orchestra, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, many years ago. I was only about 13 and it made such an impression it started my appreciation of great music - literally a life changing moment! Thanks for the upload of this great performance.

As an amateur violinist this was the first great symphony that I played. It was a thrill then, as it is now, to hear it so well done. Aside from the German Requiem I think it is Brahms greatest work.
One of the few performances I've heard where the first movement is played as a genuine ALLEGRO. So many recordings of this work take the first movement at a lackluster MOLTO MODERATO and the musical line constantly sags and breaks. The Giulini version of this movement comes in at a glacial, unsustainable 19 minutes. Kudos to Bohm for an exciting, powerful opening movement that doesn't drag all over the floor in some misjudged attempt at profundity. Brahms' music is already profound - just follow his instructions.
Dude thank you so much. We have to learn the allegro non troppo and adagio part for a festival so listening to this and adding the sheet music really helps with reading the music.
This is so cool! thanks so much. I was a music major in college, but didn't spend enough time reading scores. This is the total immersion method! Brahms is a challenge because he's always "off-beat," Haha. Thanks for posting!

I didn’t understand it at all but after learning a bit of history his music finally (kinda) made sense. Brahms was thought to be the inheritor of Beethoven’s greatness. So, this symphony is kind of like his homage to Beethoven; he uses motifs which he expands, syncopation, and even the four note motif of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 (there’s a lot of heavy use of the motif from 7:15 to 8:24). Watching the score multiple times also helped. I was able to point out the motifs that he expanded on, as well as the tiny nuances that might not be as noticeable if it was played in the background. Yeah Brahms is a really difficult composer to understand, but after you finally get him, it’s a really satisfying aha moment
What happened to the repeat in the 1st movement? At about 5:52, there is a repeat indicated, and we should be taken well back before the marking "B" in the score, but instead the piece races ahead, into section "F". Hasn't anyone else noticed this?
