Tactics or dumb luck? My first Road Race Experience (West Head Road Race C Grade)

  • With a few crits under my belt I was keen to give a road race a crack, and what better road race to do than the one hosted by Manly Warringah Cycling Club the West Head Road Race. This race is characterised by punchy climbs, lots of rolling hills and plenty of action in the last lap. This was much different to the group rides I've done as well as the crits, with its own tactics and dynamics. Check out the video to see how I placed in this race!

    Awesome stuff again Josh, the difference in dynamic between a crit and a road race is really interesting. I reckon I'll be hitting my first road race within a month in line with the season change, I'll try to keep your tips in mind! 🤙

      @@joshkwan They run crits at the Regatta centre over the Summer season which has just ended, apparently they run a Winter road race series but details are pending. Parramatta cycling club also run races at Oakville and apparently Kurrajong from April, but again details pending. I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for these details then I'll have a crack!

    First road race and you got on the podium! Great job! That fog and light really makes it look dreamy. Hmm doesn't the insta have similar battery life to a (new) gopro? You shoulda just bought one for your birthday.. good excuse to buy a new gadget! Happy birthday too btw.

      I think you read my mind. I purchased the Insta360 this afternoon as a gift to myself :P
      It’s got much better battery life, but maybe also a function of my GoPro being almost 4 years old. I’m glad I got a lot of use out of the GoPro but I think it’s time it got relegated as secondary camera on the back of the bike.
      Thanks for watching and the birthday wishes!

      @@joshkwan Haha good purchase! Worth it for the nicer colours and better low light. It's something you'll actually use frequently too. There are too many gopros that just sit in drawers unused after the first 2 months or so.

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  11 месяцев назад +1

      Funnily enough that’s one of the reasons why I started making the videos. Because I had the GoPro sitting in the drawer. Bit of a sunk cost fallacy haha

    Nice race! For filming the whole race, I suggest taping a small power bank (eg. Anker 622) to the top tube and plugging it into the GoPro directly (obviously only for sunny days).

      I purchased one this afternoon haha. The battery life is much better and it also has much better low life performance. Very keen to use it.
      Might put the GoPro on the back of the bike for an extra perspective of the race

    Nice race! My first road race was West Head C grade too, the one last month actually. Are you planning on racing out at the Newington armoury anytime soon? That's a fun short crit with one very punchy corner 😁

    my advice is C GRADE sometimes can be harder than A GRADE
    my point is once you work up push the fitness boundaries be it time in VIC ALPS or MOUNTAINBIKING
    the A GRADE guys if they a orderly its fast but a good fast but yes if you drop a wheel then its game over
    its a TEMPO thing what I am trying to say
    so C GRADE is no slouch ride

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  11 месяцев назад

      I acknowledge the C grade field is much larger and chaotic than A Grade. Perhaps A grade is a bit more smooth riding. I lack the top end power to survive in A grade. I will try B grade soon though.

      learning process
      don't fear A GRADE is my point
      but it takes a year or 2
      see where your strength and weakness are
      A GRADE hit climbs with momentum and the tempo was my point
      once you get that rhythm together with fitness group is flying

    That looks more like a crit course on the road.... up down up dowm..... Where did the young gun finish?

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  11 месяцев назад

      Haha no idea, but somewhere behind me. We’ve added each other on strava now.
      Coming up to the finish line he was actually second wheel, but there was still a good 300m left so he copped the wind a bit too early.

    What's the difference between a watts/kg climb and a power climb?

    • @joshkwan
      @joshkwan  2 месяца назад

      It depends on what is governing the resistance.
      For example a 5% climb during race conditions you can easily be going 30km/hr. In this scenario the you are mainly pushing against wind resistance. This would be a power climb.
      For something steeper, over 10% and going slower speeds, it would be mainly governed by gravity. In this scenario the amount of watts you’re pushing per your weight is the determining factor.
      Hope that makes sense.
