    Another hint would be during the discussion between Ben and Kvoth parents. At first, they talk about Kvoth's hands and her mother says he has his father's, and I quote "perfect to seduce young noble girls". Then, a few lines later, they joke about who is Kvoth father and she says "Come to think of it. There was a night, a dozen years ago. A man came to me. He bound me with kisses... and stole me away."
    I think it's pretty clear at this point.

    I enjoyed the video, keep it up :)
    Another theory I quite like is that Yillish knots are old magic, where whatever is written with the knots people believe to be true. For instance, when Kvothe calls the wind to save Denna, he reads the knot in her hair which says lovely (or beautiful). When she takes it out, he says that he likes it more when it is in. "That is the point" is what Denna says. It makes people view her as more beautiful even if they can't read it.
    Now the 'lockless' box has carvings that are very faded. I think a knot is carved into the box that says 'lock'. If 'less' is added to it, then it becomes 'lockless' and can be opened. There is quite a bit more to that theory, it would be good to see a video on it!

    • @michaelharipersad9882
      @michaelharipersad9882 4 года назад +16

      Wow good stuff. Not to mention that Denna asked Kvothe and his friends about a sort of magic where you write things down and they become true. Also that part about the box, nice theory!

  • @drex8891

    I have a theory as to why Kvothe can no longer do sympathy:
    I believe that after the events of the king killer part, which we have to arrive to, Kvothe does what he tells the farmer boy he would "if he were Kvothe". He fakes his death, and CHANGES his name, but not Kvothe, but his ACTUAL NAME. Elodin looked bewildered when he misunderstood Kvothe talking about Denna's name changing and hinted at how dangerous that would be, as in messing the persons soul in essence. I believe thats what he did, and thats why he cant use sympathy anymore, because he isnt aligned, he is a mess on a essential level. But I believe he did this to save himself. Maybe after the king killer part, one of his enemies learns his NAME and to prevent them from harming him etc he went with this last resort thing, which is the only kind of plans he tends to follow through. Kvothe the more dangerous and crazy the plan the better.

    • @michaelharipersad9882
      @michaelharipersad9882 4 года назад +25

      Excellent idea, i thought this too. But I dont think he lost his Sympathy when he changed his name, I think hes lost all the Names hes learned. Also he might have only locked his name away or part of his name away, in the box that he has at the Waystone Inn.

    • @nielspetterthomsen1710
      @nielspetterthomsen1710 4 года назад +15

      I agree.
      I think that even Denna could be the one learning his name. There are some indications that she might end up on the "bad" side of things.
      And there is that lecture with Elodin where he explains naming by using Fela and Kvothe and "love" to show how difficult it is to learn a name.
      But i think Denna would know Kvothe well enough to learn his name, unfortunately, thus leading to the actions you described

      I don't think he lost his ability to do sympathy at all. I think we find out later there was a showdown with one of the Chandrian and Kvothe learns they can find him when he does sympathy so he comes up with the clever ruse of pretending he cannot. Fooling even the reader to think he has lost sympathy.

But also maybe Lorren knows Arliden because they spoke? We know that Lorren travels to collect books, We can guess thats he probably a member of the Amyr, Maybe Lorren met Kvothe's father because Arliden talked to him while making his song about the Chandrian. Its a stretch but it couldve happened that way.

    About your comment about the door holing back the flood. There's another part of the book that talks about iax (jax) which was the one who started the creation war, being locked behind the doors of stone. The lackless box is likely a key to the door of stone.
    The time that must be right is probably a reference to the moon phases. If the door is an entrance to the fae realm, it would possibly need to be opened on a new moon.

    I'm on the fourth re-read (10th anniversary edition). I'll tell you one thing I know for sure. 'Folly' - the sword that Kote hangs in the Waystone Inn - is actually Cinder's sword. Meaning that Kvothe has killed Cinder - and the name 'Folly' suggests this was a grave mistake. Meaning the Chandian/Cinder are not as 'evil' as they may seem. When we read the description of 'Folly' in the Waystone, it's uncannily like the way Kvothe sees Cinder's sword just after the Chandrian kill the Edema Ruh.

    "A time that is right" has to do with the Moon. Probably the New Moon, while it is in the Fae. Hence the need for a candle, even one that doesn't shed (visible) light. All other Chandrian and fire say blue flame, not black.
    "Lackless likes her riddle raveling" is a direct reference to Natalia running off with Edema Ruh. Or perhaps another Lackless, which would make the Lackless/Ruh ties much older. Remember that "ravel" is not at all pleasant slang for the Ruh, as Kvothe explains in one of his University interviews.
    But I think this is about Kvothe's mother which is why she's initially so upset at hearing it. She's heard it before, either before Kvothe was born or when he was very, very young. Like a human with feelings her initial reaction is strong and angry, but like a good parent she takes a breathe and uses the incident as a teaching moment for her son.

    What if the two rhymes are not two different versions of a story, but what if they are two sides of the same key?
    It's been a while since I read the books, but I do recall wondering if the two little poems were not two halves of a manual for opening or unlocking some hidden secret, deliberately split into two to hide it in plain sight. Individually they are nothing more than poems, but when put together, they reveal the undeniable truth, the secret someone like Kvothe is looking for.
    By the way, Kvothe is an interesting name in and of itself. Remember that in early modern English, the third person singular of a verb ended in -th. This reminded me of "thus quoth the Raven", from an Alan Parsons song that was inspired by the similarly named story by Edgar Allan Poe. This ties into a theory I have had for a while.
    Kvothe is almost certianly not his true name, but Kvothe could indicate his occupation. Maybe he was not just a namer, but also a speaker. Whereas a namer would be a person who would know the name of things, a speaker would be able to use his knowledge to shape the words themselves, maybe in a similar, yet distinct, fashion to the shapers of old. Or, in other words, a namer would name things, confirming their nature, using stative verbs, while a speaker would be able to manipulate things by using action verbs. Thus, a namer would say "this is a door", thereby confirming its existence, and a speaker would say "door, open!". Being a speaker could mean a dangerous life, simply because of the resemblance with shaper magic, for we certainly know that by closing the gateways between the mortal and the fey realm, the mortal realm became the realm of 'knowers' and the fey realm became the realm of 'shapers'. To me at least, it is a certainty that there are more than two possible uses of the magic of naming. This would mean that in addition to 'knowers' and 'shapers', there are also 'speakers'. And possibly there is a fourth group, called the 'singers'?
    It could also be a genetic thing, but this is starting to become fringe territory (for as much as it was not already so), it could very well be that the magic of shaping is slowly being eradicated from the mortal world, especially if the genetics of shaping would involve fey blood. If the last known pools of fey genes are found in the Edema Ruh and the Lackless family, well both are slowly being eradicated. This would mean that the innate shaping magic ability is disappearing from the mortal realm, just as organizations like the Amyr seem to want. That is assuming the Chandrian also made the switch from knowers to shapers, instead of simply turning to evil. Genetics is a funny business, especially when used as a literary device. Robert Jordan did this with the ability to channel in the Wheel Of Time series. Julian May used it in her novels and even Terry Goodkind loosely tied the magic system of his Sword of Truth books to genetics when he made Richard Rahl split the world into two: one in which magic was prevalent and one in which magic was completely absent. Or supposedly so, because we learn in The Law Of Nines, that there is still a speckle of magic in the latter world, namely in the descendants of the Rahl family, even though Jenssen Rahl was supposedly entirely without magic.
    One final note: Lackless is presented as bastardization or a modern form of 'Lockless'. The name 'Lockless' could not only mean that an object does not have a lock, but also that a person (in this case someone with fey blood, like a member of the Lockless/Lackless family) does not need to unlock a door, gate or portal to travel between realms.

A realllllly wild theory that has been floating in my head after the 5th (yes 5) listen of the audio book, is that perhaps Kvothe is not telling the entire truth. He is Adema Ru, the greatest story tellers of all time. Could his whole recollection be a farce? Something to pass down the family line or history? It sounds crazy at first, but really think on it.

    I totally agree, and I was thinking. What if Doors of Stone has him opening the door, which is probably in some really important estate, and when the door is opened, the scrael come out and attack everyone nearby, killing everyone in line to be king (including the king) up to Ambrose? Ambrose becomes king, Kvothe kills him by the fountain in imre.

    Here's a a theory that everyone has thought about. Is Elodin Taborlin the Great ? Also why does he freak out when Kvothe asks him about locking his name away.
    My theory about Auri is that she knows the names of all things and knows how to communicate with nature literally.
    Who is Denna ? and more importantly who is Master Ash ? Is he Cinder/Bredon ?
    My favorite one, we know Simmon is high up in Nobility. Is he the king that dies i.e. Kingkiller Chronicle, if so who killed him ?
    One of the reasons I suspect this is cuz of the way Kvothe talks about him. If you catch it sometimes when he talks about Simmon and how sweet and loving he was is almost a way of reminiscing about his lost friend. Although I think this is false because it would break my heart.

    I always thought that Iax and Kvothe were related somehow because of something about Iax's green eyes that was said by Felurian if I remember correctly. If we have in mind how old the Lackless (initially named Lockless) we could actually think that the family was founded around the Loeclos box a few thousand of years before the story on the books, and that box could be what Iax used to keep the name of the Moon. Also, Iax is somehow related to the Chandrian, as he might be the one who corrupted all the cities but Myr Tariniel. Oh, and he also spoke to the Ctaeh, which doesn't really prove anything but I feel like the Ctaeh has this kind of twisted sense of humor.
    About Auri, I strongly believe that she was one of the original Amyr described by Skarpi in Tarbean. It's a little bit frustrating but I'm not comfortable enough with English so I can't find the words to explain why.

      Okay, I'm gonna try. And gosh, I've downloaded the English version of the book to search the part I remembered and wow it took me so much time to find it.
      So here Felurian was speaking about how Iax/Jax, the most ambitious shaper, stole the moon:
      It might feel too subtle to take it as a possible trail of Kvothe being a descendant of Iax, but let's remember the books emphasizes A LOT on how Kvothe's eyes change depending on his emotions, specially when his eyes turn darker.
      And while searching for this I found another interesting theory about Iax being who started the Lackless family. When Hespe told the story about Iax, he was described as a boy with no luck... with other words, a LUCKLESS boy. Again it might be just quite subtle to be taken as a trail, but I think Patrick Rothfuss presents us his story with a lot of little pieces of a big puzzlesmoothly distributed along the pages, so I really think this theory might be accurate.

      Since the first time I read the books I thought that Meluan Lackless was Laurian sister, though I didn't know if that is relevant somehow, but it creates an ironic situation for Kvothe (although he doesn't know it), as he is always considered to be scum for being an Edena Ruh but he is actually a Lackless. But after reading the books for, I don't know, five times, the idea of Iax having some kind of bond with the family and therefore with Kvothe became more and more plausible for me.

    the Underneath black dress could also be a reference to drraccus. so the thing in the lackless box could be a ring made from the scales of a draccus. as denatured iron is supposed to be so hard to find. and if Lanrae died after fighting one. then it would mean that it was made by his wife. who was said to be a powerful namer. which could have been the reason why we saw Fela out of all people making a ring of stone to plant the seeds in our mind. and she might have been a namer with the same mindset as Denna. as her way of thinking ignores all the rules when applied to music. that and the implication of the way the fae use magic for example when both is told to grab a beam of moonlight/starlight.

    about the ring. i have a theory. remmber what Elodin said about them? that when a namer finds oyt the name of sth, wears a ring made of that thing. and the song whrer the name is mentioned is practically about this very ring thing ideah. now what if k manges to find out the name of naming?! imean everything has a name. naming is like love art music etc. thoes do have names just not knwon and very complex. what if he somhow finds the name of naming and the ring doesnt have a name cause its made of names! what could you call it?! also about Denna's ring's yllish knot, her very very rare knowledge of the knots, her very chanfing name, her unknown obligation to his patron, the very mystery that how she found her patron(who is by the way Brendon himself) and her "acsidental" meetings with K,could she be a shaper? we know K is going to be an special namer, could Denna(remmber her knowledge about a magic coming true with writing?) be an special shaper?

    POSSIBLE SPOILERS!
    In the first book, when Kvothe is accepted at the University, professor Lorren (protetor of the Arquive) asks Kvothe about his father, Arliden. When he asks him that, I think he know something about Netalia and her escape to live with the Ruh. I think he is hiding something (like an Amyr something. Thats it. Lorren is protecting the Door of Stone VALARITAS in the Arquive and hiding the informations about the Amyr.)

      Excellent analysis! I definitely think Lorren is an Amyr as well, actually I plan on doing a video on the four-plate door in the archives soon and I'll for sure be talking about this very thing. I think behind the door there's info on both the Amyr and Chandrian, as well as a tomb of a dead king.

    Wild speculation maybe the candle is half of an everburning lamp? Like a reverse entropy machine that pulls light and heat into it to feed it to the ever burning lamp.

    In the songs about Lady Lackless, "one sharp word, not for swearing" it coud be Kvothe's name. "One a word that is forsworn" this coud reffer something that woud happend after the opening of the door. If Kvothe's name is used to opened the door, Kvothe coud have lost his own name after using it, this coud be the reason he can't use simphaty or play music anymore.

    You cant forget the story about the boy who stole the moon, and kept it in a box, i feel like thats something to do with the lackless box hence a male has to open the door since a male sealed it in the first place, it also takes to reason why the moon is locked away in the fae, maybe the fae is actually inside the lackless box which can only be access through the door of stone, since the moon was trapped inside a box, the moon is in the faen realm

    I always thought perhaps the word not for swearing is the name of the moon, or the part that was used to bind the moon to both realms, which makes her wax and wane in both.

    It has probably already been said elsewhere, but in the last line of the lackless rhyme we hear at the start of the first book, 'likes her riddle raveling', could it be that raveling would originally have ben Ravel-ling, referring in a derogatory way to the Edema Ruh who 'stole' her away from her noble family? I seem, to remember it also mentioning somewhere that Kvothe's father would often set him riddles too, so that could be another thing to reinforce the theory that Kvothe is a Lackless from his mother.

    I'm on board with Kvothe's mom being Natalia Lackless as well as Lyra having been a Lackless too. As for the rhyme, I think the Ring is the Ring of a bell while I think the Right Time refers to the correct pase of the moon, which should be exactly half. That would be when the two worlds were balanced. I don't think we've seen the shadow candle yet, that might be in the barrow with the King of Vintas. Kvothe is obviously the son with the blood. The stone in the Lackless box is also right on. Now the forsworn word is probably Amyr, since they forswore being Alu to become the Amyr. Finally, the door that holds back the flood is barring the way to the Lackless door... but NOT the Lackless door itself. This would imply that the Lackless family is actually older than the Creation war and now the Lackless door is on the other side.. ergo the oldest part of the Lackless lands is actually inside the Fae Realm.

    THIS IS SO FUN there are so much in those books. This was basically like having a conversation with my boyfriend and our friend, those two are always speculating about these books😂 They actually picked up exactly the same things!! We will see how it all plays out

    the last line of the poem is a name i would wager. The sleeping mind can understand names, and kvothe accesses it most when he day dreams and tips into spinning leaf. he can understand names there in the same way he grasps the lethani. so 7 items and then a name to open the door. Could be wrong though.

    So, I think you’re definitely right about Ambrose becoming the King that Kvothe eventually kills. The most prominent evidence of the their positioning to take over the monarchy is when Kvothe visits Caudicus in his study. There, Caudicus try’s to dish out gossip about the Jackiss family after mentioning how he spent the summer with them. Did the Jackiss family put Caudicus up to poisoning the Maer? I think so...

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  6 лет назад

      Yes I definitely think the Jakis family hired Caudicus to poison the Maer! I mention this in my theory about Auri being Princess Ariel, and I think there's quite a bit of evidence suggesting that the Jakis family is killing people off to climb up the line of succession :) At some point I'll make a video directly discussing the king that kvothe kills, and all the theories on who this could be
