The internet is a wild place. The best and the worst of humanity in one place, all hidden behind a screen. Luckily, most of the trolls move on and forget about you. Your channel is fantastic and I am glad you stuck it out. Your personality seems like one that can handle it all because you are so grounded in your own values. Appreciate you Dave and all the insight, adventures and photos you share with us!
The world has some horrible people Dave. I love what you are doing. Super genuine, honest and real. You are producing some great work and it’s a big inspiration for me.
Thank you Dave for all the videos, I really enjoy them, and continue to learn from your photography journey/experience. People are people, and some can't help themselves from being jerks. I'm very glad you stayed with RUclips etc. Thanks again!
I have to say I always look forward to your videos because they inspire me to go out and shoot. Shooting for me is peaceful and rewarding. I'm not out there to be the best, I'm not competitive that way. I try to step out of my comfort zone to hopefully produce something to be proud of. As Pablo Picasso once said, "Learn the rules like a pro, then break them as an artist" I try to live that daily. You are an inspiration to so many of us, keep up the great work!
Great for speaking out about this. People need to think about how they represent themselves online and the impact it can have on a person. What you're offering your audience and the value you offer are important. I'm glad you kept going. #hopeyouheal
I learned a long while back that if I had no haters, it meant nothing I was saying was worth note. Imposter syndrome stinks. It's just not fun, Dave. I'm so glad you shared this perspective. As for championing other people, I'm out here commenting and liking everywhere I can. Same way you're doing. So, I'm on team Dave.
Man, this is rough. I can’t believe just how disgusting people can be. This would absolutely make me want to quit RUclips (if I had a channel). I’m really sorry that you have to deal with kind of thing. It would be great if RUclips had the ability to prevent those types of comments from even being posted at all. It’s beyond freedom of speech, especially because that type of behavior on the internet could literally be the final straw that leads someone to take their own life. The fact that you’ve been able to not let it get to you too much and are bringing awareness to it is a big win for the RUclips community. Thank you 🙏🏾 and, I love your work!
People hate others who look or act differently than them it has nothing to do about what you do, they just hate the target doing anything in general, if group A has been living in a lie, they can't and don't want to hear the truth, to completely overturn an established perception requires a leap of faith, unfortunately, faith is something haters don't have. Education is the cure for this world. Only by studying, and constantly learning can humble a human being, even if he/she was a hater. The skintone of this video looks awesome, Dave.
I remember that video and the courage it took you to post it. Any successful healthy person will deal with imposter syndrome at sometime in their life. Unhealthy people project their issues onto others and don’t take responsibility for themselves. I’ve shoot Leica for 30 years and I still don’t understand the insecurity others have toward the brand. It’s just a tool like a paint brush or a potters wheel. Perhaps though Leica is something more, a tool you earn and haters haven’t taken the 100,000 crapy photos you need to get the rare keeper. Haters are jealous of the courage of the artist because the artist writes history and they don’t.
Hello Dave, I've been following you for a few weeks, your videos are very inspiring and relevant as well as your photos. Regarding haters, I would simply answer them with: "criticism is easy and art is more difficult". Thank you for your work.
Im someone who use to practice a martial art almost religiously until a group of girls at my gym made it very clear they did not want me around. And... I let myself get pushed out of something I loved because I was too hurt to ever go back. Sometimes I miss it, but photography has become the thing that brings me joy now, and any chance I get I try to include new photographers in my photowalks, and celebrate people just starting to fall in love with the art. I love what you said about championing others. Thank you for making this video
It’s pretty tragic when the treatment of others influence us to leave things we love. Glad you have photography and you are inclusive of others. Nothing like watching someone fall in love with something you love.
Good on you for rising above this nonsense and providing guidance for those who may experience it for themselves. This world fkn shits me at times, however we all need to maintain clarity and integrity whilst observing the positive aspects... you've done the latter admirably.
I’m glad you’re on this platform promoting common sense and photographic beauty. It’s so wild what people say about thing that have nothing to do with them
Great video, thanks for posting about this experience. I have no idea who the “in crowd” SF photographer is, they can’t have popped up on my radar as someone worth following. But I’ve been following your channel for the last year. Keep it up!
Right? I have no idea who they are either haha. Further supports that commentator doesn’t know me, the local photography community, and is just looking for acceptance from people he’s trashing others with. So sad. Thanks for the kind words and comment!
F*** the haters. We will keep creating and keep shining through the darkness. Also I’m starting to put all the haters on blast. If they are bold enough to spread hate, they are bold enough for the world to see them and face their consequences. Don’t need to block out their usernames 🥳
I subscribed recently because of how relatable your channel is, really enjoy the content, pictures, and the gear is something to aspire to, hope to get me a 35 and 50 summilux one of these days. Once in a while I take me a long drive from Houston to San Fran and bring my M-A and M8, you are fortunate to live so close to such a beautiful city.
Ive hit the wall recently and it's defiantly difficult to get through but I can honestly say that your videos have been an amazing source of inspiration to me, I needed to hear this today so thank you and please keep doing what you do........
thanks for the pep talk! yeah i did not know much about leica before following you but there is def something about it that rubs people the wrong way and it emotionally sets them off
I would like to think that there are more of us supporting you instead of the ones hating you. I'm glad that you were able to turnaround it and keep sharing your videos/ideas with us. Btw, your Portra800 VG Presets are so good that im even using it to color grade my actual Portra 800 scans 😂
I’ve found that the outside persona does tend to reflect the inside. Insecure people with low self esteem hiding behind a screen and looking for validation and acceptance. I own Leica cameras because shooting them gives me a feeling that I value enough to pay for. Pretty much everything we do in life can be worked back to a feeling and people spend their money on what they value and what makes them feel good. I enjoy your content, it helps me switch off and for that I thank you.
Thank you! I enjoy Leica for the same reason. I love the feeling of using them, and the feeling of the photos I get with them. Appreciate your comment!
Yes, well, always haters out there.. just keep doing what you do - you do it very well and your honesty and sincerity shine through, your subscriber numbers deserve to be higher. ✌
I’ve gotten a bunch of hate on videos in the past and I leave all the comments up. I never take it personally - I’m just glad they took the time to watch my video 😂. If we don’t allow people to express themselves - whether we agree with them or not - things can get dicey real quick. I think the key is to not give them any more oxygen to breathe, which is essentially what they are looking for - and what you’ve done with this video. Ignore them, and let them move on to someone else…
I typically leave up negative comments so there are receipts, but I don’t tolerate insults, personal or against others. People are fine to disagree with me. But meanness gets blocked.
Oh man, I feel you. That’s why I quit RUclips for a while. But I recently came back and it’s been a great reminder that there is a great community despite all the trolls. Can I join your SF clique? lol jkjkjk. Am in the bay also.
Hey Dave, this is a perfect example, but I think you have something special to offer the photog fanbase in addition to your “normal” content …. Really embracing your experience and gifting in the emotional/psychological side of creating images. Everyone who’s been doing this long enough knows it’s an internal battle at times. The noobs need help too as they will give up quicker after the pile of trash images we all have to grow through. And yes it’s not uncommon for channels to talk about this, but I think FEW could go as deep and personal than you could. If that’s what you want. There’s a big demand for such a lack of supply in that area. Just a thought. Not saying get rid of other content. But would love seeing more of this. As far as what you covered …. the way I see it, is if the greatest artists in human history can be subjectively despised, why am I not going to experience the same thing when I’m certainly not at their level and likely never will be? Even Jesus was and has been criticized for 2000 years so why would I somehow experience a life free from hateful criticism in what I do? It still hurts though yes. Until we learn how to live with it, and I think there are healthy and unhealthy ways of living with it. For me. I strive to do the best with what I have to work with. Because can I really do better than that? Why would I expect myself to do more than I’m Capable of? And if I need to grow, then grow. And though spite and revenge can be very powerful fuel for growing as an artist, it’s super dangerous as it will turn into bitterness and hate and will rob us from what really matters. We are then enslaved to “proving”. Anyways. Lastly, for me, I just accept that I don’t NEED to be perceived as “great” as I will likely never be. Isn’t that ok? That the world won’t revere me as special? As long as I’m Helping others, who cares! I mean. It’s a bit arrogant for me to think I am so superior to everyone else that I am going to be the next “great”! That then takes a lot of absurd internal pressure off and actually frees me to make better images. Oh. And my Canon setups cost more than my Leicas. 😂😂😂 Anyone who has pro-level gear and especially does this professionally knows that you can spend absurd $$$$ on Canon and Sony -- and even more if you are filming with cinema cameras / lenses. 😂😂😂 I think a lot of the Leica hate comes from hobbyist who’ve never dropped $4k-$5K on a camera body nor $2K+ on a lens ……. from Canon, Nikon, Sony etc.
Thanks so much for sharing all of this. I founded my channel wanting to share photography and philosophy, with philosophy being a wide catch-all word to encompass philosophical thoughts about self, creativity, emotional connection, business, etc. It’s tough to navigate the balance of gear, general photography, and philosophical videos, but I try to make sure they’re all there. From a technical standpoint, there are thousands of better photographers to learn from. But from a cultural / philosophical standpoint, I hope I can bring some unique value to the creative community. I’ve got +20yrs of success and more importantly, failure to draw from! :-)
@@davidherring that’s awesome man. I mean this was a perfect example of going deeper than it seems most are willing to go. So keep on keeping on and wish you the best. Like if this video helps change the trajectory of one person’s life? Isn’t that worth the $40 ad rev and any hate? 🤣😉
lol those comments- there’s no way those aren’t teens. so sorry you had to endure all that! i’ve definitely been hated on for my opinions on movies, politics- but photography i didn’t know there were haters of this caliber on such a niche topic
I am saddened by the progressive loss of civility our society has experienced. there is so much we can achieve with politeness and understanding. Thank you for making a really good channel.

here's another idea for coping - just keep getting older; its remarkable how much less you give a fuck about other people's opinion as you age 😅
Haha wise words!
Amen.
yep, I'll be 59 by the time July closes and that's exactly where I'm at...
so true! I"m 64 and I give a rats ass about what others say about me or my work.
