Great to see Tim get a shout out, he is such a valuable member of the guitar building community
Indeed, he always has something to add to the conversation.
LOOK AT THAT GREEN SCREEN, youre getting full on, love it
Cheers, it was surprisingly easy to do :)
The axe is really looking sweet. Also, you continue to raise your video production game. Thumbs up all the way around.
Love the new look intro to the video. Very nicely done! OK, better get back to watching the rest of the video.
Cheers.
I love these videos man. I look forward to your uploads more than Crimson or the rest of them. Much love from North of the border 🏴
Thanks buddy, very kind.
ok mr. cinematic artiste...nice effect at the intro! this is going to be a real beauty when it's done. enjoy watching each incremental step. a lot to be learned from each installment if you pay attention.
Thanks :)
Great trick: if you have veneer to apply, roll the glue on both surfaces, let it dry to a paste, then iron it on! Dead flat, you can use a piece of brown paper between the iron and the wood, but I’ve found it doesn’t burn the veneer. I’ve done fretboards like this, dead flat, even mixing veneers taped on top, very clean edges. A light board helps with this, if you have one. I worked in a photo lab, they built me a light box a bit larger than 4x8, hardened glass top. Did you know you get the cleanest cuts on glass?
Nice work as always.
Oh, highest setting on iron. You could urn the edges down before cutting for binding. Should still melt the glue.
I'm going to have to give this a go, thanks for the tip.
The fight is on! I think with all that beautiful, natural wood showing it would be a shame to add plastic binding. I think the wenge would look brilliant and complement the laminations in the neck.
Late with the reply I know but Wenge won :)
👌
👍Looking great!
Cheers Dane.
Beautiful as always - Looking forward to seeing what you do with the binding.
Cheers :)
Great tricks as usual, thanks! Looks really great!
Cheers.
Спасибо за видео это было интересно и познавательно, с нетерпением жду следующего эпизода.
The glue roller is referred to as a “weeny roller” on the Texas Toast RUclips channel!
Haha, weeny roller it is then :)
Alright now hear me out on this one with the binding. You mentioned how you had three layers of wenge veneer you were going to use. What if you did a three layer veneer like that for the binding, using a wenge for the middle layer, and another wood maybe like mahogany or something else for the outer two (a middle ground colour for the maple and wenge).
Could continue that cool stripe theme youve got in the middle for the neck thriugh section, except going around as the binding for the guitar. Would continue that lovely laminated look
I did think of doing wnge-maple-wenge to give the effect they use on Gibson customs. Decided against it for this build but the idea hasn't gone away.
Since you used the wenge neck binding.. perhaps you should consider black plastic binding for the body.. the cream might contrast a big too much with the rest, of course not knowing you finish coloring ideas.. or you COULD go with cream binding with abalone perfling on the top???
Wenge won out in the end, glad I did it now as it wasn't as scary as I thought it was going to be.
Double bound! Do it!
Maybe there is still time for that!!
Hi ya Pat,
I’m guessing your change of plan on that Wenge binding is probably going to save you a ton of heart ache? With the way that wood splinters so easily I couldn’t imagine trying to apply it in such a small detailed application ( even though it would probably look fantastic though ). I’m strictly going by what you’ve showed us on your channel too, I don’t have any experience working with this wood at all.
Moving onto to your drum sander, that positioning on which way you feed the wood may very well come in handy for any unwanted guests lol 😂
This headstock is going to look simply amazing, I love how the back and sides are looking as well along with that flamed veneer 🤙
Wasn't convinced by the veneer but it looks good but with all the different woods, plastic binding will be a eyesore! Better with either no binding or Maple, Wenge or both.
Cheers, I agree, Wenge for the win!
I think woodworking isnt rocket science, im doing my own build currently and the most important things seem to be effort and forethought/planning.
I see a very very high amount of both here. Bloody lovley work. I rate this channel above crimson guitars to be honest
Cheers, very kind of you. Planning and having a clear understanding of what order you are doing things really is half the battle.
Hi, man, thank you for the video - beautiful job. As for the binding I vote for plastic - not so risky and easier job.
Cheers, sorry but the Wenge won out in the end, happily it went down ok.
Hi, man, beautiful, beautiful! I was mistaken, but I am a litle older than you and not so brave 🙂Good job! Thank you again.@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
You could also apply veneer on the top of the center section. It would give it more homogeneous look. You would still be able to see the strip work of the neck through on the back of the guitar. I think the Gibson Slash Firebird is made in a similar way.
It is an option, I quite like the stripes though.
I think the binding depends on what colours you have planned for the top and headstock but either a maple or wenge binding after the colour to contrast rather than plastic
I'm really glad I went with the Wenge now, I really like the look.
@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams the wenge is much betterer than the plastic 👍
I watch you all time building guitars love it what was the name of the song you had while working on head stock and who plays it. Jim
Thank you, the song is called Cowboy lullaby by JHS pedals. It's in the RUclips audio library.
It's coming along nicely! I was wondering whether one could use a marking gauge to score the top veneer on the body wings before routing the binding channel, to lessen the chance of tearout?
Possibly but to be honest if it is stuck down well and a nice sharp cutter is used there shouldn't be a problem.
I think a darker binding will look a bit nicer. So wengé or black… plastic.
Me too.
Maple binding a possibility? Also, will you bind the headstock?
Yes, headstock got bound as well.
What about black plastic binding Pat?
Could have done but went with Wenge in the end.
Did the clamps dig into the back of the headstock? I was watching that a wondering if you'd used a caul to save denting it.
No, the good thing about using the foam is it limits the amount of pressure you can put on the clamps. Headstock is unharmed.
@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams brilliant!
