Hell I went to a tech school in my city ran by a former animator who claimed he was going to show us all this, we all quit and demanded our money back after a few months because we hadnt learned anything. I just learned more in 1 hour than in 8 months at a ripoff tech school.

This was so thorough. I truly do appreciate this as a digital artist myself. I think traditional methods are something that digital artists take for granted since they figure that the gradient tool and a few blend modes will cheat them to a masterpiece. Without a firm understanding of art theory, Photoshop becomes merely a retouching application with a few cool filters for pushing pixels.

Brother Bear's art was so fantastic. I think the movement and stylisation of the bears was a cut above. The fact that they could create two moose characters with all their complexity and animate them so well still blows me away. Criminally underrated Disney film. I'm not a fan of the soundtrack songs, but the art is just top notch.

I can't believe it! I've been playing around with Photoshop and came to the same solutions before ever seeing this video. I even knew what tool he was going to pick next like warp to conform to the art and then eraser to eliminate residual texture at the borders, etc. The one thing I did learn here is how to make the imported textures transparent. My solution was to add value over the texture and use photo filter to match the colors.

You have demystified so much with this brilliant tutorial. Now I know that experts make things look easy, and there is really so much foundation and years of experience in concept and form apparent in just the base drawing. But--you make this seem so much more doable than other artists and tuts.
I really appreciate your PS workflow and the way you leverage its tools for shortcuts in textures, backgrounds, etc. I think you have just unlocked something I've been trying to unlock for a long time. So thank you! It's like a new plateau of creative possibilities!

Fricken genius! Sometimes, I think that digital painting is much better than hand drawn animation. It just takes time to feel in the details with technology and know all the effects of the switches and buttons. This is the definition of creativity.

Well, for me, I download speedpaints, those who allow me to see all of their windows (like layers, colors, etc) then I replay it again and again, in around 25% of speed, so I can study exactly what are they doing. if needed, frame per frame.. and it really helps me a lot

I love the fact that you use photographic textures, in your paintings, and to me, it's definitely NOT cheating. If I'm not mistaken, most digital artists, either photograph their own textures or use stock. I live in the Florida panhandle and often chase bears, black widows and snakes so I can photograph awesome textures lol. Art can be so much fun.

Wow! That was amazing! I have been working on white and DID always find that I had trouble with the lighting when adding any kind of background. I'm going to try it with the grey now. And your use of textures! I haven't done too much in the way of that either. Mostly because I couldn't figure out how to get them to look right. But you explained the change of exposure and I think that is going to be VERY helpful in the future.

At the 41:00 mark you should try playing with the layer style with the texture layers, especially if you use the "Blend If" options you can control the texture based on its levels in a very controlled way when tweaking the "Underlying Layer" controls. It will take fewer steps then adjusting the exposure of the texture layer.
