  • In this episode of I walk through the "My Kind of Town" photo zine and tell you exactly what I was thinking when laying out and designing the project. I also share a couple reasons why I prefer going through a local printer rather than a large online commercial printer.
    I get asked asked questions about zines on a daily basis through facebook, youtube and instagram. So we are doing an entire series revolving entirely around the topic of zines. If you have any zine related questions, be sure to leave them in the comments below, and I will do what I can to answer them.
    I by no means claim to be an expert on the topic, however I experienced quite a bit through the process of making my first zine, and am happy to share the highs and lows of what I experienced.

    Man, your channel is really good and inspiring. I have been so tired of looking for useful and inspiring videos on RUclips and only finding some cool dudes with very poor and repetitive content or even some not so cool characters exhaling arrogance through their skin but again, with really poor , repetitive and in many cases, not talented at all... Finally I found something that took my attention and inspired me in my photography. Thanks a lot!

    Great video. I was a printing pre-press manager and graphic designer for 20 years. I can relate how a project like this goes together. One of the most important things is to find a local printer who knows what they are doing and what their equipment can do. Sounds like you are woking with some great folks. It's a nice looking finished product. Congrats!

      Dude that makes me so excited to hear! Thats exactly what I had hoped for when putting these videos together, that they would help people take that next step in their artwork and push passed any fear, doubt or any other struggles with putting a zine or book project together. I would love to hear more about the zine you are going to be working on. Feel free to share on the comments here or shoot me a DM on instagram. Lets connect more!

      My wife and I just bought our first house and are moving to a different part of town. I'd like to put together a project focused around putting down roots. Getting your bearings and feeling out new surroundings. I'm interested in exploring the transitions that change a geographic location to your hometown

    Nick!!! Buddy!!! Wow! I just saw this episode and wow what an amazing concept of mixing layers of Chicago city life and jazz together! First of all I am a huge jazz fan and always have been since I was a young boy. When I majored in music I studied jazz and classical piano. So I am a huge Bill Evans fan! When you added his quote to your zine, my mouth dropped open! My favorite jazz pianist of all! I also dig Davis and Coltrane among others. The whole concept is just brilliant and for someone who isn't a musician I am very impressed by your explanations about jazz music and how it set the mood for your images and the layout of your zine. As a musician myself I can really see the imagery of jazz that you are trying to express - great job!! Jazz definitely has lots of highs and lows melodically as well as dynamically. It's also smooth and rough, and yes harmonically it has lots of dissonance or tension. Love how you brought all of that in. One thing that I want to point out as well are the more blurred out-of-focus images especially the last image of the bird is of more impressionistic by nature to me - like Monet and Renoir paintings. There are also impressionistic composers such as DeBussy and Ravel, which Bill Evans ironically was hugely influenced by as he was classically trained. I also studied and played their compositions and I in fact can hear a lot of Debussy and Ravel in Evans music which is why I like him so much. Anyway sorry for the long comment, but YES YES YES I see it and hear it - the sound of jazz my friend! I wish that you had another copy of your zine as I sure would like a copy. Looking forward to talking later this week! ~Jonathan

      Wow! What an incredible comment to receive! Man this brightened my day so much! Hearing that the concept came across well from a musician and student of Jazz like yourself is so rewarding! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words. Also I totally see what you mean about DeBussy's influences on Bill Evans now that you say it. DeBussy is one of my favorite composers as well. I could listen to Clair de lune on repeat for hours!
      Anyways, thanks again for your comment. It made my day!

    Hey Nick, I'm yet another subscriber come across from the Matt Day interview. I'm really loving your videos and I'm now really inspired to put my own zines together now! I absolutely loved this walkthrough of yours, it's really cool to see the thoughts and processes that went behind the final design which I may have missed on an initial viewing of your zine and it also makes me think more carefully about how I want to put my own zines together. Great job! Thanks!

      Good question. At first I didn't really get it at all. I was expecting a chronology following the course of a day, as the lighting tends to follow a day to night pattern for the first portion of the zine. Then the spread of the people walking towards you, where you shot into the sun comes up, evoking night, or end of the story. The story continues after though, which made me think again. I didn't know where to go from there.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 лет назад +1

      Valid feedback! I can see where that could get confusing if you were looking for a typical chronological story. Thanks for sharing that!

    Hi Nick. I have just had chance to watch this. that is so cool . My thoughts of my zine have not been nearly as layout focused, I think that may be because I don't have you design skills and want to put my images more as stand alone images. I think this maybe the way I have to go until I gain more confidence. Thank you so much, I really enjoyed walking through your zine with you. I'm off to order some paper for my next effort. M

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 лет назад

      Hey thanks Martin! I actually just got your package in today and love the zines you sent over! I can see what you mean by having the images stand on their own, and I definitely that that is successful in the booklets Ive now seen of yours. I am going to be doing a mail video later this week or early next week, and would love to cover your smaller zines a bit more in depth in the video, I forgot to mention the folding technique you used with yours in my other zine video (mainly because I didnt have any in my possession until now). Let me know if you would rather me not, but I hope you allow it because your work is truly wonderful!

    • @martinscarland831
      @martinscarland831 7 лет назад +1

      Of course you can use them, if you think they are up to it.
      I have ordered some new paper today which I am excited about. I think for me zines are a bit more about the right amount of imperfectness if thats a word, and making it look like you haven't tried and yet you have thought of everything. I hope that makes sense.
      I'm glad the package arrived ok. all the best and have a great week. Martin

    • @NickExposed

    Nice video, but it leaves me wanting for more detailed information regarding the relationship with your local printer. For instance, I'm guessing they had to set up their presses in order to create the proof print. How long do they give you to tweak your images and pages before they do the final print run? What was the cost breakdown for the print job? How much does each proof print cost? Maybe this is all stuff you'll include in a future video. Digging your channel. Keep up the great work.

    • @NickExposed

    Nick what kind of printing process did you use? The blacks are so dense and glossy! I liked the tips about the great city of Chicago, I've never been there, but our English teacher at our high school (ages ago), once said while handing out our rated papers: like we say in Chicago, tough!

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 лет назад +1

      Haha I love that saying. Im not sure the exact printing process, but the papers were a satin finish to keep the deep rich black. I was extremely picky on which papers we moved forward with, for that exact reason. I also have liked the uncoated papers Ive seen some other guys use. Similar deep blacks, but with a bit of texture to it, which I really like.

      A fair point. But - half of a zine is in the design. Sometimes we crave more than just to print the images themselves. Sometimes it's a dance.
