Definitely one of my favorites too. Watched it many times. Some brothers at work were talking about the Temptations movie and I brought up the Five Heartbeats as being one of my favorite movies. They told me the Temptations was good too which I haven't seen and still haven't so maybe I'll look at it soon while it's on my mind.
FUN FACT: the choreographer who taught the Five Heartbeats how to dance is played by legendary dancer Harold Nicholas of the dance duo The Nicholas Brothers. There are a plethora of videos on RUclips of Harold & his brother, Fayard, in their youth professionally dancing. The Nicholas Brothers performed with other legendary entertainers such as Dorothy Dandridge, Cab Calloway & Lena Horne
I’ve worked 25 years in Hollywood and I owe a lot of that to Robert Townsend, the director. As a black kid it wasn’t something that you thought was possible. We’re talking late 80’s early 90’s. I had the opportunity to work with Robert Townsend sometime around the Mid 2000’s. Dude is mad humble and doesn’t get his respect as a director. He also directed “Hollywood Shuffle”, his first film which he financed himself on credit cards. No joke.
Jimmy's wife Eleanor was played by Diahann Carroll. In 1968 she became the first Black woman with her own show (Julia) who didn't play a maid, nanny or a servant.
Man. You saying those films makes me realize even more how important this one was. A lot of people didn't even understand what was going on back in the day with things like the album covers from Black artists with white couples/families on them until this film explained it. Then, things like Jay noticed where the label execs would buy the artists cars, jewelry, etc. but not pay them fairly. The incident when Red hung Bird out of the window was based on something similar that actually happened to legendary singer Jackie Wilson the members of The Dells told Robert Townsend about when he was researching for the script. This one wasn't that successful in theaters but paved the way for certain movies like the ones you mentioned and especially 'Dreamgirls,' which all reaped way more benefits both commercially and critically. This one tops them all to me easily, though.
Leon from ‘Above the Rim’ also plays David Ruffin in the biopic about the Temptations. Leon can sing as well as play basketball like you seen in ‘Above the Rim’. You guys should react to the Temptations biopic as well. I’m not sure if you guys know…although the Five Heartbeats are a fictional group, they are based mainly on the real group, ‘The Dells’.
Great movie! The guy that played their choreographer was Harold Nicolas. He danced with his brother in vaudeville shows and so many movies throughout the 1930's until the 1950's. Harold Nichols was also married to singer/ actress Dorothy Dandridge. That another must watch "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" played by Holly Berry.
I had a huge crush on Troy Beyer (Baby Doll) as a kid. She’s an amazing woman. She had a tough life as a kid, being molested by her step dad and her mother was a drug addict. True survivor story.
Y'all should react to a couple other Robert Townsend films. 'Hollywood Shuffle' that he made independently in the mid 80s he wrote with Keenan Ivory Wayans and 'Meteor Man.' That one might be the first Black superhero film.
I’m so happy I have my food ready! This is a 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐂 you hear me! I know it word for word song for song and 85% of the choreography … tell me The Temptations is next 😭👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Some kids don't get to have 2 parents in their home, the divorce rate is very high in the US. I was raised in a one parent home and did well for myself and my sisters too, don't understand all this 2 parents stuff, you can't make a man who's miserable in his marriage stay there. Most of the people I grew-up with had 1 parent homes and succeeded in life, they didn't let such a small issue hinder them in life.
I agree with you. Having two good parents is the ideal environment for children to grow in. But what I have seen also is that what if one of the parents is not so good. Let's just say the father isn't so good. Not loving or even abusive. Or is not their supportively or emotionally for the children. That situation can be worst than having no father around at all. Their are single mothers out their who are holding it down as best as they can and succeeding. I know it's not easy but they do it. I've got sisters who has done it.
@@kerry-j4m As a single parent who raised two boys, what you say is true, but I also know from experience that one parent is not always able to represent both points of view. I grew up with both parents. I think it's better to have both. I was married and miserable so I left, but I wished that we had been able to make it work.

They were called the 5 heartbeats because the one Playing the piano was not a singer he was just the writer and producer he just start singing because the other guy didn't show up

Another fun fact he abandoned Dorothy Dandridge
@ I forgot about that and the disabled daughter if I’m not mistaken
Plus Harold was married to Dorothy Dandridge and they had a daughter, Dorothy was up there with Marilyn Monroe
True, forgiveness is a good thing. So I guess eventually Kendrick and Drake may forgive each other.
Duck is Robert Townsend who wrote and directed the movie.
He actually co-wrote it with Keenan Ivory Wayans
And Baby Doll wrote BAPs with Robert Townsend some years later in case they check that out too.

There is always an "Eddie Kane JR" in every group!
