As a soldier, I have 0 trust in my helmet to be bulletproof, because they are not meant to be. Modern helmets are designed to catch artillery/grenade/any other explosive shrapnel, not bullets. Now, they are DESIGNED to, but that doesn't mean they WON'T protect from bullets, specifically ricochets from a perfectly (ish) spherical object.
Modern helmets do quite a good job protecting even against heavier rifle bullets, they're designed to maximize the chance of the bullet ricocheting away from the wearer, it's much less likely to be hit in a way where all the energy of the bullet is transferred into the helmet. Definitely not the kind of odds anyone would like to take but saying you have zero trust in your helmet is dangerous. It's an important safety equipment in almost every modern military for a reason.
.overnight helmets are made to lvl 3a standard, pistol rounds only. And depends on material, polyurethane is better at catching steel cores, but deformation more than kevlar
@@nrk9857 zero trust as in if a bullet comes straight at the helmet you are dead. OFC you trust your helmet to protect you from shrapnel and other falling debris.. Yes they ricochet bullets that come at an angle but you don't trust your life to that.. Its a chance...
@@nrk9857 I am glad you are here to explain to me the infinite wisdom of the modern military equipment that has specific grading in different countries all around the world. I'll bite and I'll explain, without further adressing it. My country's helmets (as most is most of NATO, btw, without getting into the whole NIJ vs. STANAG and national adaptations for local needs) are rated for NIJ Level IIIA. For you, a person, who mystically believes that it does a great job at protecting against heavier rifle bullets, it is a protection that is designed to stop handgun rounds, including - and not limited to - 9mm and .44 magnum at nominal velocity of 430 metres per second. The modern thrend these days - as we even see with the helmets Charlie tested - is that most countries switch to high-cut helmets, which provide better compatibility with communication and night-vision systems, and the usage of modern materials like UHMWPE. Shit, I will even go and as far as to say that even helmets in the 80s and 90s were not designed to stop rifle rounds, and you can easily look up how helmets like the PASGT worked. TL;DR - I can and I will say that modern helmets are not designed to withstand any bullets with an intermediate velocity, which is what modern soldiers carry in their rifles these days and for the past almost 70 years.
I was watching one of those history channel shows about weapons, and they had a "firearms expert" shooting a glock. It gives you a nice closeup of him and his expert grip. Something like this: 👈✊️ bro was literally using his support hand to grab his wrist
They did a pretty long video quite a while ago at the range with his special ops friend who always hides his face. You may have seen that and just mean future irl content, which I really want also, but I thought I'd mention it. At least we have The Other Channel, it's been really fun.
We need a full range day with the whole crew. Someone call the three horsemen kentuckyballistics/brandon herrera/ demolitionranch and get some crazy shit
Former manufacturer here. The cheapest NIJ level 3A lab tested helmet is available for 150 clams. Aramid and UHMWPE is not some magic. It's very simple. Most helmets between 150 - 500 bucks outperform 2-3k helmets from the Military (ops core as example).
This right here. All decent armor can be purchased for a couple hundred dollars. The stuff that is in the thousands is often full systems with multiple pieces.
Opscore(Gentex) and Ceradyne (3M) use UHMWPE (dense milk jug plastic) in their shells with carbon fiber for their top end IHPS/FAST SF helmets. They are better at catching random stray hits from non steel larger caliber threats like 7.62x39 than aramid but deform really badly when compared to aramid. The FBI actually swapped back to an aramid shell from their uhmwpe helmets if i remember right since they are more worried about handguns. Aramid/Kevlar will just let any larger caliber threat straight through. Uhmwpe when pressed correctly atleast gives you a fighting chance.
@@Mcivstx Both helmets aramid and UHMWPE have a chance to stop a high caliber bullet which flew thousands of meters and is already sub sonic (slow). But UHMWPE is better at stopping projectiles with sharp tip like 7.62x39 or .308. UHMWPE has worse backface deformation than aramid on handgun calibers. Like you already said! But as long as they meet NIJ 3A requirements, it doesn't matter. Now the problem. Gentex/OPS CORE doesn't meet NIJ requirements! The Chinese 170 bucks helmet does. Tested in the US at Oregon ballistics lab (OBL). Gentex has very very bad back face results because of their weight saving program. The Chinese helmet weights only 200g more but gives you 3A protection up to 44mag. The US helmet gives you level 2 protection. Only 9mm. Ops core produces helmets for shrapnel protection. For explosives. So they don't care about NIJ requirements anymore. Their biggest mistake was to discontinue the ops core Maritime helmet which had NIJ 3A. They replaced it with the ops core SF which has only level 2. Very bad 9mm protection and 44mag will fold the helmet to a Frisbee. They did it because of night vision, strobes and other additional weight. But they should offer two options. The Level 2 with reduced weight, and the level 3A with 200g more weight. I have the the maritime, SF and the Chinese clone Maritime. And I personally don't feel any difference while wearing them. For long nights with NODs, the SF is still the way to go. That's the only scenario where the 200g weight saving are worth the reduced protection.
@@Mcivstx yep, the deformation on the FAST SF from actual rounds is not survivable. But that's not what's the helmet is designed for. I don't understand why they discontinued the level 3A maritime though.
Lmao bruh i really had to question life decisions after realizing i watched 30 minutes of this but still the worst part is you left me wanting more! That’s what I call art… thanks Charlie and other guys and chick filming that totally had the jump scare perfect when Charlie shot the bolt gun 😂 so good
27:00 that’s pretty much exactly the issue. The Kevlar should be ripping out if there’s penetration cause that’s it trying to stop the round. It just punching straight through is a sign it’s not even trying to stop the bullet.
Lots of things in a warzone produce shrapnel but not very many enemy soldiers are pulling off 360 no-scope headshots. If they were, then military helmets would cover your whole head and face.
It's also worth a mention that modern-day helmets offer improved weight, concussive resistance, and direct small arms deflection due to the lighter/softer materials used nowadays. And also the modularity offered for NVG's and cameras and the like. There's a really interesting video out there from I believe Afghanistan where a Marine takes a direct headshot from a sniper and didn't even appear to take a TBI from it.. Not that this would be the normal case, even people's bare heads have been known to deflect bullets around the skull on occasion lol
@ICanHazRecon911 yeah, Marsoc marine/force recon sniper Cody Alford was shot in the head with 7.62 AK round and basically only got a pretty gnarly concussion but no penetrative damage. That was close range fighting in Fallijah though so you're probably talking about another case.
@@shaunnormandy exactly. Especially after cqb became more prevalent in battle. But the OP is correct that helmets originally weren't designed for small arms fire. Ww1, ww2, Korea (and even Vietnam) were heavily ordinance centric. Hell, even the flack jackets we were given in the Marines (Vietnam era crap) were JUST rated to stop a bayonet. Like wtf lol. I served from 97-05, when is anyone coming at me with a damn knife or bayonet? *we were issued modern plate carriers in 01 and Kevlar inserts.
Best guess having seen other channels test this in a more... ehh, controlled manner: The WISH helmet is likely an older style steel or ceramic helmet, whereas the "official" one is kevlar. Against pistol calibre rounds (which both are seemingly designed for) you actually want kevlar that actually "catches" the bullet rather than a hard helmet, since the concussive force transfers through a hard helmet far better than through kevlar, meaning the WISH and official helmet will both stop bullets, but the WISH one will leave you with a concussion whereas the official won't. A helmet is designed to do 2 things: Keep things going through and absorb as much of the force as possible. The official one does both, the WISH one only does one of those. You want your helmet to take as much of the punishment so your noggin doesn't.
@@Dr.GregHousethe diamond age bastion is/was supposed to be rifle-rated, though it was only available to military customers and the company rebranded to Adept armor. There's also the Highcom RCH and the SLAP plates for the Opscore helmets, which are both rated for certain rifle rounds.

I'm jealous asf of your weather from just 2 states above. Not only winter freezing & dead, but the gulf stream makes almost every single day in east tennessee either rain/snow if not just cloudy every single day. I belong where you are bro. Just simply 100% lol
It’s probably a hard vs soft armour thing, the real helmet had Kevlar or some kind of fiber based armour, and the wish one was probably a soft outer shell material like plastic with solid armour on the interior. The real one would probably do way better if you stuck to smaller less penetrative rounds
Result would be the same. Neither ops core fast no TW are designed for rifle rounds. Everyone with even a passing knowledge of helmets knows this. They are designed for pistol and frag. The weight required with our current material technology to make a rifle rated helmet would be punishing on the neck and completely impractical to wear for hours on end. Even our MILSTD MICH/ACH will be penned like butter by a 5.56 at this range. That's just not their purpose.
Guy must have adopted American culture real fucking fast. He was mostly Europe-based until WWE(2017). And Netherlands seemingly does not do private gun ownership, unless you are part of sports shooting club. Then for over a year he would not be citizen and still not be able to own weapons. He would presumably only become citizen after marrying Thea/Zelina in late 2018. So he got on the gun wagon prety recently presumably.
If you go on his wife’s channel there’s unboxing videos from the company battle box and they send him equipment for his guns and he talks about them with great detail so he was trained how to shoot by someone really versed in it
Hey Charlie, just want to say that you can improve your aim by not snapping your finger off the trigger after every shot. Instead, depress your finger until you feel the hard reset. if there's an obvious wall in the trigger before firing, creep all the way up to that wall before you take the shot.
Fun fact, even modern military helmets are only rated to stop up to a .44 magnum or level 3A. There are far more casualties in war due to shrapnel then direct bullet fire, these helmets are great at stopping a piece of concrete hitting your head at highway speeds
Hate to say it, helmets are mostly to protect against impacts and rubble things of that like, the "bulletproof" aspect is more of a last resort because if someone is shooting at your head, chances are they're gonna aim for your face...or center mass
Pretty much all modern helmets are NIJ IIIA level, so capable of stopping common handgun rounds. Than there are helmets which are more of NIJ III which can stop some rifles.
What they dont know or understand is that there are NO helmets that are rated for higher than 3A - 9mm, .45, and .357. You'd need at least level 3 to stop any type of 5.56 and we just haven't found a way to develop them yet where they won't be waaay too heavy.
I wouldn’t say no lvl 3 helmets, but they usually involve add-ons and are pretty impractical. Like the diamond age bastion, hhv up armor, x-shell, ops-core slaap, etc.
Great that you're getting into guns, reccomend you take a course sometime. You'll be amazed how much better you shoot and handle the weapon when you start practicing the proper technique. Sage Dynamics, Kinetic Consulting, Haley Strategic, Reston Group, Modern Samurai Project, just to name a few.

@@nrk9857As a Marine I always assumed if I got hit in the head with an AK round it was game over, helmet or not.

What’s the 150 one

27:00 that’s pretty much exactly the issue. The Kevlar should be ripping out if there’s penetration cause that’s it trying to stop the round. It just punching straight through is a sign it’s not even trying to stop the bullet.
But don’t rifle rounds just zip through it as they’re not rated for rifle calibers?

"Hey, guys, today we're trying bulletproof helmets!...From Wish."
funfact, helmets were made to deflect shrapnel from artillery (most helmets at least) not bullets.
Originally and mainly, yes, but most helmets you would actually buy today are rated 3A, which is specifically for pistol rounds (bullets).
@@shaunnormandy exactly. Especially after cqb became more prevalent in battle. But the OP is correct that helmets originally weren't designed for small arms fire. Best guess having seen other channels test this in a more... ehh, controlled manner:
The WISH helmet is likely an older style steel or ceramic helmet, whereas the "official" one is kevlar.
Ops core helmets are the golden standard. To be honest having a rifle caliber rated helmet is not worth it.
they don’t make rifle caliber helmets, atleast not according to this comment section

He would presumably only become citizen after marrying Thea/Zelina in late 2018. So he got on the gun wagon prety recently presumably.

An anti-bullet helmet would certainly _cover more of your head and face._
Pretty much all modern helmets are NIJ IIIA level, so capable of stopping common handgun rounds. Than there are helmets which are more of NIJ III which can stop some rifles.
@@Stop_Gooning Ever tried running with a regular helmet on? Or literally anything covering your face? There's a reason we don't use them
