Lovely bird. Beware of the cold. Could be extreme. Safety first. Take good care of yourself. Have some happy holidays. Want you to survive. Lovely days enough next year.
Always do. Many layers on in this weather.
Winter is my favorite time for photography and the most challenging :)
I subscribed! Awesome video. I like the snow! 😄❄
Thanks and welcome
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always. Merry Christmas and Happy new year 🎄🎅✨👍
Thank you! You too!
Nice - these little guys are pretty twitchy. Great shots in the snow though. It’s amazing how these creatures survive in the cold. Can’t imagine diving into an icy water pit to get breakfast and then sitting on a branch literally freezing.
All the best,
Scott
Yes they are interesting birds to say the least. He outlasted me in in the cold for sure. he was still around the pond when I left.
all kingfishers are twitchy from my experiences. Currently have a mated pair of Sacred Kingfishers no more than a 2 minute drive from my home, so I'm paying them regular visits. Can't get close enough yet and don't really want to set up a hide (it's in a suburban area, and let's just say the locals are well, not of a good socio-economic high crime background).
I would have never guessed that Belted Kingfishers would be up there this time of the year. Great image of him in the snow.
Thanks. Ya as long as they can find open still water they will hang around.
Oh did the print get to you. was supposed to be there yesterday, but it is the holidays.
@@WILDALASKA I will go to the Post Office later today and check. We have had bad weather, for us anyway, snow and last night and into the early morning we had freezing rain so the area is kind of at a standstill.
I didn't realize how tough and hardy these little birds are!
Yes they are
Awesome! Surprised this guy is sticking it out so far north! Must be super cold since you're actually wearing gloves.
It wad about -3 when I was photographing the Kingfisher and warmed up to balmy 0 by time I did the Vlog lol
They stick around Anchorage in the winter. If you can find open still water then you have a chance to see one. He just really surprised me as it was not what I was expecting yesterday :)
Love these little guys, have one that visits the pond out back, have yet to get a good pic of him or her they are really shy. Love the short vid still get chilly watching but not as bad today, was 4 degrees this morning with wind chill of 15 below. I know that’s not comparable to your locale but I’m in Alabama and we ain’t used to this crap.👀👀
Ya they are a bit on the spookish side.
You were colder than me today. Was 10 here but we had 50 mph winds that wreaked havoc on the roads with blowing all the snow berms back into the roads.
And yes 4 for 'Bama is crazy.
Wow, I've never looked into it, just assumed that they were a species that would go farther south in winter. Nice find and opportunity!
Yeah. If you can find open still water here then you can have a chance to find them, but rare.
Wow Scott, those are such amazing shots!! Mostly liked the one at 3:05 with all the sloping snow around. In my native language Dutch (as well as in German) a Kingfisher is called "Ice Bird" even when they really need some open water because they starve when everything is frozen ice.
Thanks. And yes it was an excellent opportunity yo capture the bird in a different perspective with the 4 feet of new snow we got;)
@@WILDALASKA The belted kingfisher has perfect colors for these conditions. The classic kingfisher with the orange an blue would stand out way too much in that much snow! The most snow we ever got was just shy of 1 foot back 13 years ago ..
How awesome! I love Belted Kingfishers. Tough to photograph in flight. How are you liking your Z9? I spent the morning yesterday photographing an Eared Grebe in NJ. How it got here, who knows. We do get vagrant birds all the time. Have a great holiday weekend. Merry Christmas! 🎄🎅🎁
Yes they can be tough in flight.
The Z9 is great. Still learning it as its my first Nikon.
We got a duck stop in last year that was supposed to only be in China that caused a stir up here. Silly birds.
Merry Christmas to you also :)
Thanks for this video. Have you tried the latest Z9 Firmware (3.01)? How is it in your experience if you tried it?
Yes im using the 3.0 firmware. The AF got a little better. Its a different system than the Canon so Im still learning it.
@@WILDALASKA Nikon released a new firmware 3.0.1 two days ago I think. It has some autofocus improvements. People are saying it's showing improved autofocus performance over firmware 3.0
