Joseph’s story occurred before Moses. It is told in the book of Genesis the 1st book of the Bible. The Joseph story is how the Jewish people ended up leaving Ancient Isreal/Ancient Palestine and ended up living as a tribe in Egypt. While Joseph lived the Jews and Israelites coexisted peacefully. After 72 years in Egypt, When Joseph died at 111 years of age the new Pharaoh of Egypt, who did not know Joseph, enslaved all the Israelites in Egypt. The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt 400 years. Then Moses was born as per Exodus the 2nd book of the Bible. The Prince of Egypt story then occurred.

@Riley Garraway The movie creators forgot there is a span of 472 years from when this movie ends and Moses is born. The Pharaoh who Joseph (i.e. Potiphar’s slave Paneah) interpreted the dreams for was Thutmose the II OR III. His son was the father of Thutmose the IV who became Akkenaten (i.e. the monotheistic Pharaoh who believed in one god) It is believed that ZaphenathPaneah (I.e. Joseph’s elevated name) who remained a great advizer, is also the actual same vizer advisor known as AYII in the historic record. [His death matches the death recorded for Joseph in the Bible] Supposedly Joseph taught Akkenaten (i.e. Thutmose the IV) which is why he was monotheistic. The Hyskos invaded after and took over being pharaoh, enslaving the Jewish people. The Rameses line comes from them.

@Riley Garraway There is nothing wrong with Ramses the first, being the father of Seti the first, and grandfather of Rameses the II / adopted father of Moses, In the “Prince of Egypt Movie”. The Prince of Egypt pharaohs are a different Egyptian Dynasty, than the one in “Joseph King of Dreams” based on the biblical timetable. The mistake the movie makers of “Joseph King of Dreams made” was that Joseph’s story in the Bible found in (See Genesis), and Moses’s story in the Bible (found in Exodus) occurred during 2 separate Egyptian Pharaoh dynasties. Joseph was born at least 511 years before Moses. Joseph came to Egypt, sold by his brothers at 17 years old during the rein of Thutmose II or III. If I am remembering correctly. Joseph was elevated by Thutmose III. Joseph was 30 when pharoah elevated him out of slavery. Joseph was 37 when the famine started. Joseph was 39 when his people came to Egypt. There was 72 years of peaceful coexistence with the Egyptians. The grandson of Thutmose the III was Thutmose IV who then became Akkenaton the Monotheistic, only 1 God pharaoh. Joseph died at 111 according to the Bible. After Joseph’s death, the Hyksos or Hkysos people, with new WAR chariots conquered Egypt, re-established the Egyptian Gods and goddesses, and became the new Pharaohs. It was the Hyksos, or Hkysos pharoahs “who knew not Joseph” as noted in the Bible, and enslaved the Jewish, or Hebrew or Israeli people. (Joseph’s people). The Rameses pharaohs are descendants from the Hyksos or hkysos pharoahs of Egypt. There was a 400 year time span between Joseph’s death and Moses’s birth. FYI Film makers often mix-up history. Just understand that the Pharaoh in “king of dreams” was not an ancestor of the Pharaoh from “Prince of Egypt”. Two separate Egyptian dynasties spanning more than 511 years. While the Pharaohs who knew Joseph lived, the Hebrew people and the Egyptians co-existed peacefully. When Egypt was conquered by the hyksos or Hkysos pharaohs, the hebrew or Jewish, or Israeli people were enslaved. The Bible states that the enslavement was 400 years in duration until the birth of Moses. Then the events shown in Prince of Egypt, the story found in Exodus, occur. Rameses the III was born 2 or 3 generations after Rameses the II. [My own biological daughter is an actual descendent from Rameses the III, via her dad’s DNA. (Proven by 23 and me genetic testing)].

@Riley Garraway When it comes to internet or Wikipedia, check wikipedia, and multiple internet sources, then verify with 3 to 5 other distinct sources. People on the internet and wikipedia are each capable of making mistakes. Also known as Google it then Verify, verify, verify. No one is right or correct 100% of the time. The universe will make sure mistakes happen occasionally, to everyone. In the cartoon universe of these movies Yes Ramses the 1st was the father of Seti the 1st, who was the father of Rameses the 2nd and adopted father of Moses. If the film makers wanted Ramses the 1st to be the Pharaoh who Joseph interpreted dreams in their version they can choose to have it appear that way, but in reality Joseph was dead centuries before even Rameses the 1st was born. For their universe the film makers may have changed it, just do not take movies to be accurate or truthful. Movies are summarizations at best. Have a great night

Joseph's brother, Levi, becomes the ancestor of Moses, Aaron and Miriam in Prince of Egypt.
God gave Joesph the gift of dream interpretation, and at the end, when the brother's find out he is Joseph, they apologise, and Joesph says, "what you meant for evil, God turned to good." Joseph realised that because he became a slave etc, he became governor of Egypt and was able to save everyone. so though his dream as a kid was of them bowing down, Joesph hadn't realised it was because God had meant for Joseph to save everyone during the famine. something like that anyways :)

Joseph was the 1st son of Rachel. The only wife Jacob loved. Born when Jacob was in his 90’s. Joseph was 17 when betrayed by his brothers. He was 30 when he interpreted the pharaoh’s dreams. 37 when the famine started. 2 years into the famine is when his brothers came to Egypt. The time Joseph spent in jail is debated either 7, 9, or 11 years. Most sources say 9 years in Jail.

2 years after he interpreted the dreams of the 2 other prisoners, he was freed. Joseph was also favored in Jail and given the position of assistant warden for his honesty, humility, and sincerity. Yet Joseph treated all prisoners as if they were above him in status because he was only a slave, not even a rightful citizen of Egypt. So he was very well respected in the prison as well.

Jacob/Israel's story is my favorite in the Bible. He loved Joseph's mom Rachel, but her father tricked him into marrying her older sister Leah first. Is why Jacob had 2 wives and why he favored Joseph. The 2 sisters always fought to earn their husband's favor and give him children. Is classic sibling rivalry. XD

That story is even deeper, because even though Leah wasn’t loved like Rachel, many great biblical figures came from Leah’s son Judah. King David. King Solomon. Jesus. All were of the line of Judah, so even though man may not favor us, God always sees us and loves us and chooses us.

His entire life has a good theme as well of lying and cheating, but ultimately getting his due penance and coming back to being good. He lied to steal his brother's inheritence and for that, God had Laban trick him with Leah and Rachel and then later on his own sons lied to him too with the bloody coat. His first name shows how he was a supplanter and liar his whole life, but God was willing to give him a new name which would then become the name for the entire people of Israel

If I recall when Jacob wanted to marry Rachel first and for that he needed to serve 20 years to her father and work on his land (could be less if I am wrong). So after the years of survice on the wedding Rachel's father switched her for Leah - her sister and Jacob did not know until the deed was done, so in order for him to also marry Rachel he needed to serve another 20 years.

Joseph married Asenath the daughter of the high priest of On (Ancient Heliopolis in Egypt). Potiphar (Joseph’s master) came for Joseph in prison after his wife Sagira died. Joseph’s name was changed when he was a slave. His given slave name was Paneah (He Lives) because Joseph nearly died as he was being brought to Egypt originally. When Pharaoh elevated Joseph he renamed him as ZaphenathPaneah which means (He, The Unknown God Speaks and He lives),

It wasn't until I was older and watched this again that I realized Potiphar imprisoned Joseph out of pride. Cause how would he look to others? His wife coming onto a slave? It would ruin his image if he let that slave resume his post. So he put Joseph 'out of sight, out of mind'.
That's why Potiphar was so shocked that Joseph bore no grudge or anger towards him.
Well, the reason why Joseph wouldn't have been able to see his mother is because of his position. Since he's controlling all of Egypt under the pharaoh, he's very busy making sure the country survives the famine. He can't just up and leave.

Joseph didn't really give in to the hatred. He wanted to test his brothers, to make sure they didn't treat his younger brother by the same mother Rachel, the way they treated him because he knew that Benjamin was bound to be Jacobs's favorite as well, after him. Benjamin was actually born before Joseph was sold. Even though the Bible indicates that Jacob favored Joseph not only because he was the son of his favorite wife, but he was also the youngest because he called him "son of my old age", in that case, you might wonder wouldn't it make more sense for Benjamin being literally the youngest, as well as the son of his favorite wife, to be his favorite, so why Joseph? Because Joseph was the firstborn of his favorite wife. Because he chose Rachel as his rightful wife, and Leah was forced on him through deceit, so in his mind, the firstborn son of his beloved wife should have been his rightful heir. But since he can't have that because he is one of the youngest of his kids, Jacob tried to compensate for that by favoring him above all his other children.

It's always worth remembering that slavery was a huge part of human society. No culture has their hands clean of it. From the Mayans to the Native Americans to the Holy Roman Empire. French Scotland. They all had their own type of slavery and servitude. The Egyptians by most accounts treated The slaves that they would buy from Rome and Greek and other cultures very well. Were rarely known to take slaves themselves. It's also worth noting that the Egyptians allowed the Hebrews to live in their country after they lost their own land and most of the Hebrew slaves that the Egyptian had were sold from the Hebrew people themselves.

Definitely and what made the brothers even worse on top of all that, is that at one point, they wanted to go as far as to murder their own brother! It was only their oldest brother, Reuben, who persuaded them not to carry it out.
But yeah, God's grace and love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8), so even God forgave Joseph's brothers in the end. I also love what Joseph said to his brothers in Genesis 50:20 (which is easily one of my favourite verses in the whole Bible): "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to keep many people alive."

Joseph actually was one out of 12 brothers and because of him I believe close to 70 people in his family got saved from the famine when they moved to Egypt because of Joseph. This story is a prequel to the Prince of Egypt. Levi was one of the brothers and he is the ancestor to Moses. So if Joseph didn't go into slavery he wouldn't be there to interpret the pharaoh's dream and prepare everyone for the famine, thus preserving Egypt and his family.

I don't think Joseph could've gone back to see his family.
He was a slave for a good portion of his life in Egypt, so he couldn't just run away or he would've been punished/killed.
The only time he would have been able to was when he was granted power second to the pharaoh but that power was conditional, he had a job to do to keep Egypt from going to ruin so I'm guessing that he was kept under watch so he didn't run away with whatever wealth he would've had access to.
Joseph is a better man than I.
If my siblings had done to me what his had done to him, I would NEVER forgive them.
I wouldn't kill em, but I wouldn't lift a finger to help them either.
Which is odd cuz the children of Jacob are a big part of the religion I was raised in growing up.

The first change that occurred was with the Jewish people, part of the laws in which Moses gave them spoke of how they should treat slaves, the change is that when they had them they should treat them with respect and technically as a family member, and at 7 years they had to give them freedom, it was the slave's decision whether to want to stay with them or not, that was a revolutionary change for that time since the rest of the world treated slaves as less than animals, there are people who use this text to speak badly and say that God approves slavery, but you have to put it in the context of that time, not in the current time

JV, thanks so much for reacting to this film! Honestly, I will say that I loved at least “You Know Better Than I” more than the other songs in this film, whereas I loved pretty much every song in The Prince Of Egypt. Still, even if that was the case, I still lived this film for sticking really close to the Genesis account in the Bible. Yes, like Prince Of Egypt took some liberties. Still, Joseph seemed to take less liberties than Prince Of Egypt. I also loved how the brothers changed, and that Joseph forgave them in the end. Man, did Joseph learn to forgive, and do other seemingly impossible situations. The ending is one of my favorites as well. I’m actually planning to ask for this one for Christmas, believe it, or not. Anyway, thanks again for reacting to Joseph: King Of Dreams!

Actually, Joseph’s story occurred before Moses. The Joseph story is how the Jewish people ended up leaving Ancient Isreal and ended up living in Egypt. After 72 years, When Joseph died, the new Pharaoh of Egypt who did not know Joseph, enslaved all the Israelites in Egypt. They were enslaved in Egypt 400 years. Then Moses was born. The Prince of Egypt story then occurred.

18:28 I mean, I don't entirely blame Potiphar for what he did to Joseph. Imagine if you had an employee that's only been under your employ for a short time but you've come to like and trust him in that time. Then one day Jane comes to you and tells you that this guy tried to rape her and he denies it. Who would you believe? Jane or the guy? NOT that Jane would ever lie about something like that, just hypothetically. I see Potiphar's position.
A little context for the Bible story. Jacob was actually married to his wives Leah and Rachel (who were sisters and his cousins) at the same time. I don't know when Leah died, but Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin. Him and Joseph were her only children. Leah and two servants were the mothers of all Jacob's other children (which is why he had so many).
Also, unlike in Prince of Egypt, not all the slaves in Egypt were "Joseph's people." At this point Egypt enslaved all kinds of people, even Egyptians I'm pretty sure. It wasn't until Joseph brought his family to Egypt that they started to enslave mostly Hebrews which is where the Moses conflict comes in.

Joseph’s father actually had I believe a couple of wives. His first wife, at first, was barren and could not have children, so she gave her husband a couple of her servants to have children with.
Then when both of them were old, an Angel came to Joseph’s dad and said she would have a child. She was like late 60’s or older when he was told.
She then had Joseph and the dad spoiled him and gave him education, and his mother spoiled him with the coat.
(But then again, when you are past child bearing age and then have a child, it would be normal that the child would be special to the parents.)
And cool fact: Joseph was such a good prisoner, that the chief of the prison elevated him to a high station to help the other prisoners.

I’ve gone through things that are beyond forgivable…Maybe not every person agrees with how he went about tricking his brothers in the end, but for me personally I agreed with his decision. I’m no longer religious and do not believe that forgiveness should be given out freely to everyone….For me I can only forgive someone if they are actually remorseful of their actions. I have forgiven many people that didn’t necessarily “deserve” forgiveness simply because I believed the remorse they held inside was real. And their are those that I choose to continue to resent because they do not have any guilt for what they have done…I’ve tried for years to forgive someone who neither deserved it, and didn’t want it, and it only caused me further pain. The brothers in this movie definitely do not deserve forgiveness, but the way I see it forgiveness is possible because they regret their actions and have lived with the guilt for so long. If they had no regrets revenge would still be wrong, but holding onto the anger would be understandable

I could never really root for Joseph in this story because I related more to the brothers. They were older and from a different mother, then came along a new brother from the wife the husband was actually in love with (which in itself is messed up to realize, that your dad didn't even really fully love your mother he just was doing it cuz that's what he was told), THEN the parents gave that kid special treatment and put all their attention on him! Like yeah, i woulda tossed Joseph in a hole too probably 🙄

Absolutely adore this movie. The sad and ironic truth to this story is the jealousy of those brothers sent Joseph to Egypt, saved the current generation during the famine by bringing everyone to Egypt due to Joseph's position but once Joseph died, their descendents would end up as slaves for multiple generations after. That would lead eventually to Moses and the need for him to free his people.
All sparked by sibling rivalry and jealousy.

I always thought that creators took much more liberties in "Joseph: King of dreams" than in the "Prince of Egypt", but your commentary made me realize they really butchered the original story. While the movie shown most events mostly truthfully, it shown very little of what Joseph and others were really like, how they were described in the Bible and what their personalities were or what roles they played in what have happened. And, as you have noticed, they almost completely skipped God in the story.
Still, I like the movie 🙂The music is nice, especially "You know better than I". I also like the message about forgiveness, letting go of the past and working hard to make the most of what we have. So I would recommend the movie for entertainment. I just wouldn't recommend to take it as a true story of Joseph.

Jacob (Joseph’s father) had a similar story in that his twin brother Esau was the one to be firstborn but Jacob ended up taking his brother’s birthright. He and his mother, Rebekah, tricked his father Isaac into giving him the family’s inheritance and Esau wanted to kill him. Generations of brotherly fighting! Isaac also took the birthright from his older brother Ishmael (who became the father of the Islamic nation) and Jacob became the father of Israel. The first part of the Old Testament is basically one giant family tree 😂

The Biblical Timeline is that Joseph and his family came to egypt and there made a home. Skip another few generations and we are at the Moses story.

    Fun fact about Joseph’s Dreamcoat:
Donny Osmond has incurable giggles. So when it came to the brothers begging for Benjamin, the brothers were told that making him laugh would be a paid break for them.

If you want to react to more Biblical movies since you don't know the stories, there are several live action ones. Some better than others. There's the Charlton Heston classics from the 50's, and then there are more modern versions that are good too. I would recommend the Bible miniseries from 2013 as it highlights many major stories that happen in the Bible and it's only 10 episodes long.

    Fun facts:
    1. Joseph foreshadows Jesus being betrayed, broken, and then rising to power.
    2. Joseph was 17 when his brothers sold him into slavery, and he became the prime minister of all of Egypt at the age of 30. Jesus began His ministry at the age of 30 as well.
    3. Joseph was sold for 20 silver pieces; Jesus was sold for 30 silver pieces, and Judah was the main instigator of betrayal in both cases.
    4. Joseph had 2 sons, and Jacob gave them a blessing, putting his right hand on the second-born son and left hand on the firstborn; this is significant because the firstborn was usually the rightful heir. By doing this, Jacob basically gave the blessing of the firstborn to the secondborn, thus foreshadowing Jesus's statement, "But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.” (Matthew 19: 30), also subtly hinting that God always chooses the weak, the broken, and the rejected to be His heroes.
