  • Back in 2001, Peeves was amongst the many characters that got cast for the big screen adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. So why isn't he in the movie?

Shame we never got to see what Rik Mayal was like as Peeves. I would've liked a scene involving Peeves tormenting Filch with lines like "Shan't say nothing if you don't say Please."

He was cut because he kept making the kids laugh during filming and there was far too many retakes. However this could easily have been rectified by filming him and the kids separately

I remember when I was a kid, Peeves terrified me.
I was playing the PC version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, I was at the level when I was practicing the Skurge Spell, and then suddenly Peeves appears. We fought each other, he ran away, and I thought that that was it. It wasn't until later, when I discover a treasure crest during the Diffindo Spell lesson, and I decided to open. AS soon as it opened, Peeves jump scared me and attacked me. Since then, I was terrified to open another chest, cause I was afraid that Peeves was in those treasure chests. And sometimes, I was right.
It wasn't until years later, I realized that I could use the Alohomora spell to open the chests at a distance, of which I use that tactic in order to prevent myself from being jump scared by that bastard.

Hey Suspect. I think I may have found something interesting relating to Peeves being in the film. According to IMDb for the Philosopher’s Stone, I found this sentence on the trivia page and I’m quoting it:
*“The troublemaking poltergeist Peeves (played by Rik Mayall) does not appear in the movie, nor in deleted scenes on any home editions of the film. However he can be seen for a moment in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. When Harry and his friends go to the Gryffindor common room after dinner the first evening. He is seen 'walking through' Dean Thomas. Mayall claimed he didn't find out that he was cut from the film until he saw the movie. Mayall claimed that he was cut because the young actors and actresses kept laughing at his performance.”*
Now I am not saying this is 100% legit since IMDb isn’t to be trusted, but i did try and watch the scene this was referring to to see if Peeves does appear and it’s quite hard to spot. Just thought you’d like to know seeing as how this is quite interesting.

I’m loving these discussion videos- this and the ‘25 things I hate about movie theatres’ are great additions and I think you should do more of them. Rik Mayall would have been great in HP, I just know it: Hell, maybe for a 20th Anniversary release in 2021 we can get the deleted scenes released. But that’s just wishful thinking.

    "never plot relevant"
Okay, tell that to the Vanishing Cabinet which he interacts with in several scenes including in the Philosopher's Stone. He also drops it, causing it to break and being put into storage in the Room of Requirement.

    • @charcharbug
      @charcharbug 2 года назад +1

seeing the vanishing cabinet in the philosopher's stone would've been insane foreshadowing!
and the movies never really went into detail about how or why the RoR was changed into a storage room, except for maybe one line Ginny says in HBP. little context details like that would've made it feel so much more coherent and connected

There actually are extended cuts of the first 2 films, included on the wonderful Hogwarts collection boxset, and they’re pretty cool. It’s just bits and pieces here and there, though Chamber of Secrets has some alternate takes too, and yes that means CoS is over 3 hours long in its extended form aha. It still would be cool if Rik's footage got released one day. I also heard that they apparantly shot footage with the other ghosts to use for the first four movies. (Simon Fisher-Becker A.K.A the Fat Friar told this at a panel) Talking about the ghosts, does anyone know if John Cleese actually shot something for Order of the Phoenix, 'cause there was rumour and some news reports, I believe, that said he'd be back for that movie, but he never appeared in it and I wonder if he ever came to set and it was cut or if they intended to film with him, but never got to it.

I hope this isn't a false memory, but here in the US, the Young Ones was first released on a DVD set called "Every Stoopid Episode." My sister had this set, and I have memories of the special features including interview clips with Mayall. He was being interviewed about the young ones, but the interview was conducted on the set of Harry Potter and he was in costume, When I moved out on my own, I bought my own copy of The Young Ones on DVD, but by then "Every Stoopid Episode" was out of print and had been replaced by the "Extra Stoopid Edition" which is objectively superior because the episodes are complete (the previous release struggled with some music copywrite clearance) but the special features were all different and these interview clips were absent.

A poltergreist is not Ghost but a spirit that appears in houses/buildings. It similar to a klabauterman in boats, is the spirit of the boat/house that is there to protect it from people who are disrespecting the place.
In Scandinavic/norse belief you have the character Nisse/Tomte/haugvette, which is a small version of the original owner of a farm/land that protects the living resident, often (In Norway) wearing a red pointy hat and with a beard (not too different looking to a dwarf/santa clause)
Other similar creatures: Kobold, a Germanic sprite/spirit

Time to guess the next movie review if you said you are halfway through writing it:

    Indiana Jones Temple of Doom
    Star Wars A new hope
    The hobbit An unexpected journey
    Spider-Man Homecoming

i was so glad that they included him in Hogwarts Legacy, the devs of that game are either true harry potter BOOK fans, or they did their homework. In the game, peeves looks and sounds almost exactly how I imagined him all those years ago when I read the books on launch. As a testimont to his range, he also voiced The sorting hat, Nearly headless Nick, Fat Friar, Gladwin Moon, Professor Binns, some of the goblins and some of the Centaurs. Amazing job.
