- CORFE CASTLE DORSET - A Full Tour of Corfe Castle Village
Corfe Castle is a picturesque village near Minehead in the heart of Dorset, England, dominated by the ruins of its namesake castle. The village and castle stand strategically on a gap in the Purbeck Hills, a route between Wareham and Swanage. The name "Corfe" comes from the Old English word "ceorfan," meaning "a cutting," referring to this very gap.
The castle's history stretches back to the 10th century, with records indicating it was the site of the murder of Edward the Martyr in 978. However, the castle as we see its ruins today largely dates back to the 11th century, built by William the Conqueror. It was one of the first castles in England to be built at least partly of stone, marking its significance. Over the centuries, the castle underwent many changes, with additions and improvements made by various monarchs.
Corfe Castle played a significant role in the English Civil War, serving as a Royalist stronghold. It withstood two sieges before finally falling to Parliamentarian forces in 1646. The castle was then slighted, meaning deliberately damaged to prevent its future use as a fortification. The dramatic ruins we see today are a result of this destruction, a poignant reminder of the tumultuous times.
The village of Corfe Castle grew in the shadow of the castle, its history intertwined with the fortress above. Many of the buildings in the village are constructed from the same local Purbeck limestone as the castle, creating a cohesive and charming aesthetic. The village offers a glimpse into a traditional English way of life, with quaint streets, historic buildings, and a strong sense of community.
Today, both the castle and the village are popular tourist destinations for visitors. The castle ruins, owned by the National Trust, offer a fascinating insight into medieval history and architecture. Visitors can explore the remnants of the castle, imagining its former glory and the lives of those who lived within its walls. The village itself is a delight to wander through, with its charming shops, tea rooms, and pubs. It's a place where history and modern life blend seamlessly, offering a unique and memorable experience for all who visit.
