Lovely compilation, Lady Karen! Ian Astbury was probably the most handsome man in rock back then! I have big love for The Cult! They're amazing live, I've seen them several times.
This track is one of my all time favorites, the riff beginning around 3:35 is one of the most muscular hard rock sounds. you did a great job with the visuals to go with this; thanks so much for doing it.
As for the meaning of the song, here's Ian Astbury's own words: The Cult's front man, Ian Astbury, explains the inspiration behind this song: "When I wrote 'American Horse,' I had an image in my mind of a black stallion with an American flag draped over his back, being whipped by some kind of dark figure. The horse and his mane have an eagle feather, and Indian beadwork, so I kinda took this to represent the American Indian nation." Astbury is fascinated by Native American culture and has been known to wear feathers in his hair on stage in nod to the culture. When Astbury was boy, he moved to Canada from England, and it was here that Astbury was introduced to Native American culture first-hand: "I travelled to a six-nation reservation and there I was exposed to a native people in their own environment. I later became fascinated with Native American Indian religious and political systems. I saw a whole lot more truth and wisdom there than in what I was being taught by my white schoolteachers." Astbury's interest would manifest itself most prominently on The Cult's fifth album, Ceremony, which was highly influenced by Native American culture.
i haven't, but wish i had as this is a conversation that a friend and i have had a few times, the awkwardness of brittish artists in the 80's being obsessed with native americans, adam ant etc
Have re-discovered The Cult after walking away in 1989 after a "disagreement" with IA at The Scrapbar(NYC) The most under-rated band ever, this was the soundtrack to my time in New York, Thanks for your videos! Love the new CD, see you in ATL June 17. Viva La Cult!
I saw that tour and the previous one for Electric. Man it's so god damn good it still gives me chills. I saw the following tour, and then again a few times. Even Ian with the Doors which was awesome as well! Jason Bonham was opening for the Sonic Temple tour in Montreal. And we were all on magic mushrooms! lol... quite an experience!
One of my favorites from Sonic Temple. I remember several friends of mine in different cities along with music reviewers of the time reported that Ian was getting shitfaced throughout this tour. And while I'm certainly not against rock and roll or the insanity that can come with it, I can't help but wonder if "less lubricated" sets on that tour might have pushed The Cult to the next level? Either way I love them and consider them to be one of the all-time greats.
And I miss Jamie Stewart. I feel he influenced the music more than we think. For the Electric tour he was on rythm guitar and they hired a bassist. It was POWERFUL to say the least! Wild Flower was crazy! And a certain band called Guns N Roses was opening!
I tamed the American Horse. Six months of smokin' that shit, and I gave it up, cold turkey. I'll admit that seeing a guy on a motorcycle get killed right in front of me on the freeway was a powerful influence to get off the poison. I danm near freaked, and that was that. No more black tar.
Ooh yeah... Yeah, yeah, yeah Well, well, well, well Stick it in your ear 'Cause it ain't exactly clear What you people hear I tell you that's right, oh yeah Sucker in the middle Blowing hot and cold Cracking his whip On the American horse He's gone crazy, completely crazy Trying to tame the American horse, well He's gone crazy, completely crazy Trying to tame the American horse, well Feather in his mane Showing no fear Of a twisted shady fool I tell you that's right, ah-ha, that's right Truth's a mighty clear Forever on and on Never break a spirit Of the American horse, well Don't you shoot him down He's gone crazy, completely crazy Trying to tame the American horse He's gone crazy, completely crazy Trying to tame the American horse, yeah He's gone crazy, completely crazy Trying to tame the American horse He's gone crazy, completely crazy Trying to tame the American horse Yeah, yeah, yeah Crazy On the day they tried to tame the American horse, yeah Crazy On the day they tried to tame the American horse, ow Riding on a pony Riding against the wind And in came Brando And he told it like this
He’s not who he think he is ..??? U once told me ... (sking) ... I know that John ... I do have Native American in me as well .! I am Gods Queen for ALL of them 2... !!
Fucking Gorgeous... Dammmm...!!! Hot . I am not who u think I am either ..!!!! And I know who he is ...!! I am Gods Queen and amongst the living ... love
Well, you'd be better off trying to tame the clouds above a mountain one would suggest; which, ironically, the Hellenes of Athens tried one year to do, just prior to their recent Olympics, the suggestion being blow the damn thing up. (They didn't end up doing it though.) Alternatively, grant Statehood to Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. and allow Democracy takes its (more Democratic) course.
I bought this LP in 1988. And now, 2020, during the quarentine time, I can feel the same energy. Great song!
I've been quarantining with the Love and Ceremony albums.

I stumbled on this song putting my workout soundtrack together. I don't remember this song ever getting any airplay when it came out in 1989.
One of the best band's underrated big time 👍🇺🇸

One the best bands I ever saw hands down. They were so loud and good and the show never seemed to let up for the 2.5 hours they were on stage!
I mean, seriously. Wasn’t my favorite song on the record when it came out, but it is now.

Ian dropped the ball with his goofy spiritual shaman type thing. Missed the mark so sales didn’t go big.
Zero people suck! WOOHOO
Russian Horse not American
This album was kind of badly written and badly BADLY produced, Mr. Bob Rock from the Payolas! They mighta got a little carried away.
