Horror really is the things you don't see. Silent Hill PT proved this when someone debugged it and discovered the uncomfortable fact that there is a creepy ghost floating directly behind you out of your view the whole time you play, totally unawares you are being followed except perhaps subconsciously from the odd noise, shadow or reflection.

    • @chestnut4860

In real life something like this would work because subconsciously we can sense presences behind us. Even though we can't see what is behind us our subconscious can tell through consciously imperceptible details. The problem is that in a videogame these "consciously imperceptible details" don't exist.

Also... a lot of the people watching it (myself included) were very young, partly because of the people who were in it. Sarah Greene and Craig Charles were both on shows that were very popular with kids, and it was pretty common for kids to stay up late on Halloween.

The BBC had a long history of making horror based mini-series by the time Ghostwatch came about... One early example is the 1981 4 part series 'The Nightmare Man' - about a mysterious and vicious killer slaying people on a remote Scottish island. It was adapted from a David Wiltshire novel 'Child of the Vodyanoi' by legendary Dr Who writer Robert Holmes... Holmes was often being reigned in by Dr Who producers for his vivid and repugnant horror elements, which often got dramatically toned down... With 'The Nightmare Man', he had a field day, as did the production team. Again, it succeeds greatly from what it doesn't show. In the first couple of minutes, a dismembered corpse is found in the 'rough' on a golf course - but this is only implied... a bloody hand under a bush, then another hand an impossible camera-pan away [as the actor turns], implying the victim was torn limb from limb without showing any more than a hand caught in a bush. In a later episode, there is a whole segment of photographs from a recovered camera that are projected as a slideshow in synch with the audio from a cassette player of the victim who was recording his daily birdwatching progress as he was attacked in his tent. Again, you see glimpses, blurry suggestions, shapes but the audio is utterly blood-curdling for reasons I won't reveal. The sombre mood of this whole mini-drama, the seriousness and grounded performances of the believable actors and the sparing use of actual horror augmented with implied horror makes this mini-series very effective. I was scared as an almost teenager at the time, and it still creeps me out a little even now, if I rewatch the DVD. I thoroughly recommend searching this out.

This was live TV - you couldn't just rewind to find out if you overreacted when you thought you'd seen him. It completely gaslights you into thinking you didn't really see anything at all and it's done perfectly because this then gives you a false sense of security.

You should do a video on the movie Threads. Similar idea to Ghostwatch. Aired by the BBC in the 1980s, presented in a documentary style, and infamously scared the bejesus out of an unsuspecting audience already primed by TV news with nuclear anxiety between NATO and the Soviet Union. Threads was presented as a frighteningly plausible "what if" scenario except it kept the knife in for longer than is typical - showing how nuclear war would cause a near total break down of society for years and years after the dust settled. Not something that would likely ever allow you to return to whatever normal life you led before the attack. Showing how survivors would be reduced to chronically ill scavenging mobs. Showing cops executing people on site and windswept irradiated farmland being the sole source of any long-term food reserves for decades to come. It exposed not only how hopelessly underprepared the UK was for a nuclear attack at the time,. but also how any sufficiently large disaster can unravel the threads (har-har) of an urban society in an instant. And modern industrial people like us aren't in a position to handle that. The sheer sense of insecurity and dread it created left me speechless. I don't live in the UK, nor was I alive when it broadcast, but I heard about it recently and watched it online, at home, alone, in the middle of the night, and it's the scariest movie I've ever seen in my life! I didn't feel okay for days afterward. Something I wasn't prepared for.
Given your video topics I'm sure you've seen or at least heard of Threads. I would love to see you breakdown the production and cultural impact of this brilliant and terrifying TV movie!

I saw Ghostwatch when it aired - I would've been about 9 at the time.
I think something people don't realise about it is that, because of a combination of the people in it - Craig Charles and Sarah Greene were both popular with younger folks - and the fact that it aired on Halloween... a lot of people who were watching were younger and more likely to be susceptible.
There's also the fact that this was pre-Blair Witch Project (and an inspiration for that movie), and I guess people were just less media-savvy back then. Unless you were one of the few who'd seen Cannibal Holocaust, this would probably be your first exposure to a horror mockumentary.
I think also, PTSD had only started being widely diagnosed a year or so before (possibly because of the Iraq War?), and people might've been a bit trigger-happy with their armchair diagnoses. Claims of PTSD came in very quickly, and as I understand it, you can't really make a PTSD diagnosis at that point because it's just not distinguishable from just being shaken up by something scary.
Still, with all that said, it's just a very well-crafted piece of horror. I watched it again about 20 years after the original airing, in broad daylight, fully aware that it was not real... and it's still pretty damn scary. I think they really went all out because they weren't sure if they were going to be allowed to air it as a mockumentary, and it paid off. Everyone who saw it remembers it, and I think most of us are pretty happy about it, even if the BBC doesn't seem very proud of it.

Orson Wells did a radio show in the 40s that caused wide spread chaos in America. There was a disclaimer at the beginning but most people missed it. Halloween night and Orson Wells with his "War of the Worlds" broadcast frightened an entire nation as it was set up to look like it was breaking news of alien invasions and people dying.

I don't understand how people think things are real like this. Acting is very obvious when it comes to being filmed. People speak too perfectly, there's no stutters, no misspoken words. No fillers, no ums. Just super obvious that it's a rehearsed line. Also, actors rarely bring their whole face into acting. Especially back then lol. Now, some start to. But many don't, you can see it in the eyes. So it's weird to me that people ever fell for this. And none of them react as most humans do to situations. I dunno. It's like when you watch ghost investigation shows or RUclips videos, you can always tell when the crews are faking stuff.

What I've never heard about Ghostwatch is... did they advertise? I mean, were there commercials? And if so what were they like? I was thinking that if they showed GW an hour later, maybe fewer kids would've seen it, and it wouldn't have been that big of a deal as far as scaring children was concerned. But there WAS a disclaimer saying GW wasn't real, but apparently, a lot of people missed that as they tuned in while it was already on. So I'm wondering, did they advertise? Print or commercial? If so, then everyone would've known when to tune in, and some would've missed the disclaimer anyway, but if they advertised, then I feel more people would've tuned in early enough to catch the disclaimer. Or was this something that just popped up on the BBC that night and no one knew that it was going to be on? I feel bad for those kids. But still, GW was awesome!

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

No TV show or movie should EVER be held responsible for the reactions of the public. Those actions are the responsibility of the individual. I don't care what happened; it merely means that they weren't strong enough, smart enough, or mentally sound enough in the first place. It's called separating the wheat from the chaff. That entire 'trust in the media' experiment angle worked perfectly and made it's point. You can't put your full faith in something like that, you have to think for yourself. It's all a process of natural selection, really.
It only goes to show how easily manipulated people are and how fragile they are/have become by hanging on every word as gospel. Which, ironic word usage, I realise now--as religions do the same thing. It's all manipulation and brainwashing for power, control, status and being able to 'other' yourself or group as something special/blessed by an all seeing force, OR othering groups of people that don't share your beliefs by shunning them, hurting them, and sometimes downright killing them. All while operating under the guise that they're doing the right thing and/or doing the will of their God.
And not just cults. All religions.
