Hey Lionheart, I don't know if you noticed but when you hire mercenaries some of them have your factions sigil in the top right corner of their unit card. This means that those mercenaries are unique to your faction, which basically means they are cheaper to hire and maintain.

matthew swigert Actually since patches 9 and 10 the performance has been much improved, I can run the game on Extreme settings at 50-80 fps down to 30-40 in big zoomed in clashes which is perfectly fine to run on.

Lionheart, i just wanted to say thanks for your commentary, both in the vids and the comments! It's great for a RUclipsr to keep in touch with his fans. I can't play R2 to it's full extent yet because I have severe graphical issues like others, but from what i have it's been awesome and I can't wait till that patch comes out! In the meantime, your vids more than suffice!
Lion, if you hold Ctrl + drag your units in battle, they will walk to the position. Just saves having to press the run button every time to stop them. I mean it's either Ctrl+drag or drag + r. Not much difference but it might help haha.
3:46 I would like to think that when the ships were seizing and about to attack, they sent out one ship to talk to the general and see if he wanted to help

Sadly I only got to play the prologue campaign when I was at CA so I really didnt encounters y issues with the game hence I was very optimistic about it as the build I played seemed very good. Had I had a chance to play the grand campaign then I may have been more critical.
DinoOpsGaming First of all, it wasn't 300 soldiers. That's Hollywood, buddy. It was 1400 royal guard mixed in with athenian soldiers and standard spartan warriors. Also, not all of Greece is cliffs. In fact, most of it is mountains, but nobody lives on the mountains. Greece is a shore-based country. The city-states lived on the shores, so they had good navies. The terrain is very accurate, is what I'm saying.
That's i think not true beacause you see persians were made of millions and only 300 and 1 spartan mustve killed atleast 10000 persians i know this seems impossible but i like your hypothisis
+Santhanam Iyengar The Persian army didn't number in the millions (again, Hollywood). Herodotus says they did, but a more accurate measurement would be around 250,000. Herodotus also estimated there were around 5,200 Greeks at Thermopylae. A modern estimate is around 20,000, but personally I like Pausanais' estimate of 11,200. The reason people keep carrying on about 300 Spartans is because Leonidas dismissed most of the force to fight another day, and he led the remaining 300 Royal Guards in the pass. It was the time that Leonidas bought at Thermopylae that led to the Battles of Salamis and Plataea.
Brandon Korner Man, millions of soldiers in an army, that would be so crazy back in those days, the world probably only had like 400 million people or less lol
no the game needs to be optimised for a lot of machines and drivers need game patching first before new updates can be released. Its a game issue not a player one.
while in battle the hoplites should always be in phalanx. you get a huge armor bonus and the only penalty is speed. the big advantage of the hoplite phalanx is that they will attempt to stay in formation while under attack basically making a shield wall preventing the enemy from breaking through
@ Alex Lindwall If you read this, just want to let you know that the real Spartan tactic was not to first do a wave and run away. It was that they had like 15 000 men and then they just attacked and destroyed the enemy and their archers etc. fired above their spearman etc. heads. Don't get me wrong lion's tactic is AWESOME!!!! It would rly work with real Spartans, too!!
port locations are locked in to regions if they can have them they will have them, you cant dismantle then below their lowest tier. so if the settlement or provincial capital doesn't have a port it never will, and if it does it always will.
If always woundered why didn't make it so you could attack a city that's already being sieged and attack both army's or enter a siege or battle as an ally and then betray your ally. Stuff like that would be cool in games like this since stuff like that did happen in war.
+Alex Martinez Hence its a game one should not bother in doing what seems right but what is most advantegous, thats the glory of games where you can tell modern day standards to go take a walk
Most people wouldn't do that Because news would get around that they did that and it would be really hard to get an ally when you are known for backstabbing
Lionheart, just a tip that i found in other total war games, if you let another faction fight the enemy and go straight for the capture point, then you can win the settlement, even if the other faction besieged the settlement, however be aware that this can go both ways, many a time i have spent alot of time in siege only for AI reinforcements to steal the settlement
Also, it's really made to have you try and have all the province, since edicts are really good and effective overall. So if you have every settlement but one, go for it, it's worth the extra trouble:D Have fun!
Mine has severe graphical issues prventing me from playing it fully, but from what I have played, it seems to very a LOT of fun and has a LOT of good new features. I also love the new UI, very minimalistic and allows to to look at the campaign map more, keeping you immersed in the environment/ world.
Yeah of course there's the plague etc haha. But that's nothing compared to to losing 10% of your troops every turn, especially on longer campaigns. I forgot to mention the huge costs that usually went into supplying your forces, keeping your lines intact or letting your fleet supply from the coast. Rarely any army could survive for too long on it's own supplies.
I remember my first custom battle. I had was. Going to play the as Rome and have Egypt help me and we had massive amounts of troops. We're attacking Britain and I made the game crash. LOL
So far, loving the game. Very different game experience with every faction, very different campaign gameplay, agents and their uses, and I'm hoping the diplomacy turns out to be similar to games like Civ IV, eventually. I liked when I killed captives and it gave me a bonus to all the enemies of that faction.
He is working on a military victory. Most likely he is building up his military tech so that late game he can heavily focus on civil. Or he could be roleplaying and focus heavily on Military Tech because Sparta didn't focus on civil that much.
Sorry forgot to put a meaning.. meaning that they fought against eachother but they did make a band of warriors which were called The power of thebes or something but it consisted of rome and sparta but they only fought against smaller clans in secrecy...
I'm in the same boat I'm playing Napoleon and empire now ( because your average computer can run those games now) I just have to wait a few years when Rome is a older game and average computers can run it
Darth_Vader has, unless he has since made an announcement I missed, stepped down from modding Total Wars. He continues to update his mods, but stated that he will make no more. He is however making a game based around the American Civil War.
Your culture spreads through characters like Dignitaries, buildings and faction traits. The happiness of a settlement is not shown, but rather the happiness of the whole province. So the more cities you control of that province, probably best for you. One thing that I haven't tested is to intentionally destroy culture buildings on a enemy city on the same province and see if that helps my city.
Fascinating. Thank you for the upload. I used to be a huge Total War fan, but I've recently moved away from it - or bought a mac, whichever came first. But that was back in the Shogun days. I'm curious, if you advance technologically, is there a supreme warrior like in Shogun? You could advance enough to train a Geisha - the indestructible assassin. Is there an equivalent to that in the Spartan expansion?
Hi LH, If you want to form a defensive line playing Rome do you just line them up waiting for the attack? There seems to be no defensive posture/guard mode. Or would you be better of counter attacking them as attack stats seem higher than defence stats I hope you get what I mean :) Also seems you can only use your pillum when attacking and break formation. It seems when you attack with your Roman army it becomes a frantic messy mob (looses formation) Thanks

Hey just to let you know lion you dont have to have your general to the back because the spartan general are really strong i joined them with my spartan army sometimes in the middle of the line or in the front of the whole army when they charge in so far i did not lose a general IN A BATTLE otherwise many were assasinated haha
Cyprus is op late game they held off my strongest fleets for 24 turns and after I landed they kept their city for 5 more turns with relentless attacks only bc I could only spare 4 fleets and 2 army's as Roma bc I was wavering in spain
its really funny that you mentioned making a post, l'm currently dealing with a bug / glitch where when l try to start up the game it gets stuck on the loading screen, its not frozen it just doesn't want to load. (l'v already reinstalled 3 times and still nothing)
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but i'm pretty sure he is done making Darthmods. I enjoyed all of his previous work myself and remember reading somewhere on his forum that he is retiring to work on a much bigger project full time.
Love your videos Lionheart! You are my favorite TW RUclipsr to be sure. Quick question for you or anyone who know. What button are you hitting to show where your hoplites are going to be while you are moving your missile troops etc. Not sure my question makes sense, but if anyone know what I mean and can answer I would appreciate it.
Darth Vader said that he was done with 'Darthmodding' the total war games on the total war forums; It's been awhile since I've been on the forums so that could have changed, however.
The game is stunning. It's weird as I upload at 1080 and I have disabled one of my 7950's and now the game is fine......maxed out with everything on just the one card.
Love Rome! The only realism thing that's lacking is that in any War before the 20th century about 10 times as many troops died from disease/exhaustion than on the battlefield. This 10:1 ratio of course wasn't always the same, but still a pretty solid number throughout history. But then again... I would get really pissed if my Armies would just start losing soldiers without fighting -_-
Hi Lion Heart I was watching one of your other videos and you mentioned revising for university exams, what uni do you go to, what year are you in an what are you studying history by any chance lol :). I'm starting my first year at UEA doing Philosophy.

Oh I see, sorry if my comment was a bit rash - I have enjoyed your videos for a long time and really appreciate what you do a lot for the total war community. I'm just confused as to whats happened to the title it does not have the same quality as the other releases have, its almost as if a entirely different team worked on it. The campaign AI on hard (playing as Iceni) is so passive its a joke! I walked into and conquered Rome virtually unchallenged in a short amount of time. Really sad
a crazy course of history! think about it! if the Spartans became and empire, and allied with Rome, they would become rullers of the world, with the leadership and Military commanding expertise of Rome, and the sheer brutality of the Spartans, none would stand in they;re way, and would submit to Spartan-Roman Rule!
New to your channel and I am digging it. Is it possible for you to get more closeups when you're not heavily engaged with micro? Keep up the good work. :)
Dang that is so weird in my Sparta campaign I took out Epirus and then they stayed around awhile fighting with Rome. In the end Rome won but they were weakend.
i bought the total war spartan edition with the full game wrath of Sparta daughters of mars arena access gold and Greek myrmidon unit and Greek states culture pack, best thing i ever bought totally awesome stuff.
Odd that it shows the battle as Sparta vs. Epirus with Roman allies, instead of the other way around, since Rome initiated the assault. Unless it strictly shows the battle from your point of view. I wonder what might have happened if you had perhaps left the Romans flapping in the breeze and captured the flag yourself. Or perhaps just left them flapping in the breeze. :)
hhmmm, you got a point...but still Spartan's are bad assess! They could easily put up strong resistance when Rome come's waltzing in to Spartan territory!
Is there an effective way to convert cultures in a single region/city or must you maintain control of the whole province before your culture starts spreading?
rome can get any unit from any other faction. just build an auxilliary barracks in the region. for example: you can get longbow hunters in gaul or syrian archers in Syria. I hope i've helped you out :-)
Hey Lionheart, I don't know if you noticed but when you hire mercenaries some of them have your factions sigil in the top right corner of their unit card. This means that those mercenaries are unique to your faction, which basically means they are cheaper to hire and maintain.

This just in : Loading screens are taking forever and people wonder what is happening
Dang they were royal to you also try and making a military alliance to complete your objective it said you could
Dose Rome have any archers beside mercs ? If so how do you get them
rome can get any unit from any other faction. just build an auxilliary barracks in the region.
for example: you can get longbow hunters in gaul or syrian archers in Syria.
I hope i've helped you out :-)
thanks man :)
ur welcome :D
