I’ve been eyeballing the EAD-10 for a while now, but the compressed sound has kept me from pulling the trigger. FINALLY, someone addresses the plague of compressed drum sounds and shows what can be done with this thing! Thanks!
Oh my god and I also hate people being like “I can’t get my drums to sound like (insert popular internet drummer name here)” when the drums are super compressed on a EAD10, and you just can’t get those sounds acoustically
Finally someone says the right thing. Eloy Casagrande is one of the best drummers who has one of the worst drum sounds from his studio recording RUclips videos. He put the Tama Starclassic to shame because of excessively EAD effects.
ive seen people on reddit considering dumping hundreds on a new snare because they want the eloy “cracking” snare sound. It’s sad that some people think that eloy’s sound is entirely acoustic. more drummers, especially beginners, need to learn what you can actually get acoustically without miking up and crunching with effects.
Thanks for this. That heavily compressed sound on some of the biggest drumming channels, with some of the best drummers was driving me crazy. It sounds like fireworks being let off down the street
i’ve had this mic for close to 3 years now, and i’ve only ever ran it dry after the first week, it’s so much better to get a drum tone in mixing than locking in compression permanently while tracking
Really makes a difference to research what a compressor does and why this setting or that setting will affect your sound etc. And do that with any effect or frequency when trying to eq. I promise your sound will improve and you will know how to shape sound with emotion or inspiration etc. Great video brother. My wife is going mental wondering why I say "John" all the time! You got it stuck in my brain! Hope you have good new year
thank you for this! Unless it's really specifically desired for a certain style, heavy compression of drums is one of the worst sounding things for a lot of genres. Yeah it might make it easier to fit a full drum set recording into a mix but it's gonna sound quite choked and take a lot of the life out of it.
Great tips man! I love this EAD and it was a breakthrough when I figured out how to make it sound more open and full without the factory "boxy" sound. I ended up learning to EQ a bit and now usually separate one track into 3+ channels for "Lows", "mids" and "highs" and I've been loving how they sound that way
Been thinking this for a while. When I got my ead I was so happy with it and I quickly realised it always sounds like an ead10! Now I hear that sound everywhere and it sticks out. If I'm using the raw ead sound and use any compression at all- it's normally just half of 1 light of compression which is plenty to give everything a lift. I love using it as an option/glue mic too alongside other mics.
thank you! I am so done with the overcompressed ead sound on every drum video :D all the kits sound the same. I think of the EAD more like a great in ear self monitoring solution rather than a source for an output mix, but not everyone has a full set of mics or a audio interface. I get that
At that point , why bother with the EAD , a cheap 50 dollar 8.channel mixer and a few cheap mics ( any ) … or a phone docked to ambient MIc would also let you go straight into a DAW
EAD is much more convenient. For a basic setup, it only has one mic and a combined cable. You can play along and monitor your backing tracks easily. It also has built in audio interface.
So what we've learned from this video is that the EAD compression sucks, or at least when it's high because when its low it's not bad imo and was better than the raw audio in that 3-way shootout part
ALL compression sucks when it's overdone. Takes away all the dynamics and leaves nothing but flat transients with zero character. Not just on drums either. My trick to dial in a generic (one knob) compression is bring it up to the point where it becomes noticeable, then roll it back just a tiny little bit. Basic audio engineering is super overlooked by almost all musicians. I get it, it's another deep rabbit hole in addition to learning an instrument and music theory, but it's 100% worth the effort if you ever want a polished self-produced recording of any kind.
I think one of the main reasons why people have the compression on their EADs cranked when they record videos, is that most people watch videos, especially short format videos, on their mobile devices without headphones. It's less about the compressed drum sound (which hurts my soul), but more about the clarity of it on tinny little phone speakers. Compression, as intended, compresses all of the audio to the same level, which makes it generally easier to distinguish what's going on on the drums (not cymbals though, the attack and release of the compression make them sound all fucky). Another neat side effect of heavily compression on drums is that it hides inconsistencies in volume that would normally make you sound "less professional".
I would love to combine this with normal mics as well. I love this for monitoring, since I don’t think I ever get a good monitor mix playing link most clubs. This device is a godsend on a few different levels
The EAD knob led lights have 2 brightnesses, I like mine on 2.5 just when the 3rd led is dimmest, is dimmest a word? Anyhoo this gives a nice combo of live drum with a little compression to help with how most online video like youtube applies compression anyway.
This has been my hesitation with the EAD lately too. Im doing what you’re doing in Logic, but I also got a kick mic and a large diaphragm condenser that I am blending with the dry mix to give myself a bit more flexibility.
Nice sounds as always! If you dont want to bounce in place and make a new audio file you can right click and click “unlock smpte position” to have the audio unlocked!
I absolutely love my EAD10; there is so much more on it than just the compression effect. I personally use the dance 8 setting at about 50% effect and it complements my drums perfectly.
Great video mate, I want to add as well that you can change the Trigger Sample in the Yamaha EAD10 & if you're in post production in your DAW you can use a 3rd plugin called "Knock" by "Plugins That Knock", it will cost £70 odd quid at the time of me commenting but it will bring drums to life even with the presets.
The EAD10 is cool, I actually got to try it out at Brick by Brick when I played with you guys in Dropout during the Hanabie run (I was with Lucreica) my homie had one and it was dope but I still prefer to mic and mix the kit myself, otherwise I’d be alll over it.
@ it works , I have my stereo room mics and also I blend the EAD on the Room Rev preset for the “long reverb” , I nice High Cut ( around 7k) and that’s it.
And here I am saving up for an Allen&Heath CQ20B having just put a Kelly Shu in each drum except my snare. The EAD10 is a cool piece of tech but just seems like such a content creator cop out.
What is the advantage of using EAD10 instead of mics? Ive never done anything like this and im thinking about getting mics or EAD10 but for price of EAD10 you can get a mic set in my country, so i need some help with that please.
I never use the compression, it completely changes the sound of my kit and cancels out the natural sound of my kit. I just use a touch of reverb and half the time I can’t tell if my headphones are in or not
as long as you have little to no compression. if you send compressed audio into ai stem splitters, your cymbals are affected by the ducking that happens when other drums are hit with them
This is an illness that we see even with big productions in the studio. The recents Ozzy's albums are good examples. It's just a bad hip thing to use to much compression on drums these days. It will pass.
I was interested in this thing, but my rack tom reso would be just over the mics. Useless. Anyway, good old Zoom R24 with the built in mics or a few cheap but good mics to play with (Avantone, NEAT, MXL, Rode...) and voilà !!
The best produced drum sound can't be accomplished with only one mic with one take. Sure you could do multiple EXACT takes with the mic on different drums, but that would take so much time. Take Wyatt Stav for example - he recorded the audio for his drums covers on an E-Kit, then would film himself playing on his acoustic kit exactly to his E-kit audio. A nice work around since he didn't have multiple mics and the know how to process the audio. Also raw acoustic drums will NEVER sound as good as drums that are properly mic'd, gain staged, and processed "properly" for the style of music being played. Mics aren't just used to amplify, a lot of times mics are chosen and used because of how they can shape a sound, and the sound is shaped even further with processing.
Definitely the raw mixed in Logic sounds the best and most natural. Well done, sir.
I’ve been eyeballing the EAD-10 for a while now, but the compressed sound has kept me from pulling the trigger. FINALLY, someone addresses the plague of compressed drum sounds and shows what can be done with this thing! Thanks!

And that's why Steve Jordan gets it.

Man , you're hitting on something I've thought about for a while . Love it !
Oh, that compressor's why all these drummers sound like they're tapping on a coffee table instead of playing the drums?
Thanks for this. That heavily compressed sound on some of the biggest drumming channels, with some of the best drummers was driving me crazy. It sounds like fireworks being let off down the street
Fireworks is the best description. 🤣 How could I not have thought of that. LoL
i’ve had this mic for close to 3 years now, and i’ve only ever ran it dry after the first week, it’s so much better to get a drum tone in mixing than locking in compression permanently while tracking
Honestly the EAD10 raw sounds pretty good, I personally wouldn't add any compression to it.
Same here, not fond of too much

I can barely get my printer to work when clicking around on my computer
Great tips man! I love this EAD and it was a breakthrough when I figured out how to make it sound more open and full without the factory "boxy" sound. I ended up learning to EQ a bit and now usually separate one track into 3+ channels for "Lows", "mids" and "highs" and I've been loving how they sound that way
How do you do that? Just take the track and create three tracks and then EQ them differently?
i think the hyper compressed sound is fire lol it fits the hc tone that i personally like
Been thinking this for a while. When I got my ead I was so happy with it and I quickly realised it always sounds like an ead10! Now I hear that sound everywhere and it sticks out. To this day I wonder why no other company has made their own version. THe compressor on this thing is awful.
Great video. Im new to drumming and have the EAD10. Have been struggling with my snare sound since day 1. Never tried logic b4. Good work.
At that point , why bother with the EAD , a cheap 50 dollar 8.channel mixer and a few cheap mics ( any ) … or a phone docked to ambient MIc would also let you go straight into a DAW
EAD is still a great option to play live with and record your set.
EAD is much more convenient. For a basic setup, it only has one mic and a combined cable. You can play along and monitor your backing tracks easily. It also has built in audio interface.
Thanks for the hard work. These videos are great!

I use only the stage reverb at halfway, gives me a spacious sound whilst also sounding raw too
Great demo, Joey.❤️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

Nice Video, more stuff like this please
the raw itself already sounds good. Might sound even better if combined with other drum mics for the cymbal stuff. Good video
I absolutely love my EAD10; there is so much more on it than just the compression effect. I personally use the dance 8 setting at about 50% effect and it complements my drums perfectly.

I'm curious, I use a lot of percussions on my kit, does this able to capture everything or is it just meant for small drum-cymbal oriented kits?
I was on the fence about these but that seems mint
If u plug the out from a mixer with a few mics into the mic port from the ead u can use several mics for ead instead of 1 single one.
The EAD10 is cool, I actually got to try it out at Brick by Brick when I played with you guys in Dropout during the Hanabie run (I was with Lucreica) my homie had one and it was dope but I still prefer to mic and mix the kit myself, otherwise I’d be alll over it.
I honestly thing an iPhone with garageband effects sound better than the ead10… its just not a good sound it produces
i turn off all settings and triggers bc i want it to get the raw audio from my drums fr
I use my EAD as a Mono Room , I placed at the front hoop of my kick drum and EQ as a room mic … etc. so far so great , try it!!!
Definitely stealing this idea!
@ it works , I have my stereo room mics and also I blend the EAD on the Room Rev preset for the “long reverb” , I nice High Cut ( around 7k) and that’s it.
@@juanluiselzurdo I can already imagine how that must sound. Good stuff, my friend!
Can you use different mics with the ead 10 module? Rather than the unit it comes with?
He did a video like a week ago
And here I am saving up for an Allen&Heath CQ20B having just put a Kelly Shu in each drum except my snare. The EAD10 is a cool piece of tech but just seems like such a content creator cop out.

Great vid! What mic settings are you using for the module? Like what level is your mic and trigger set to?
I never use the compression, it completely changes the sound of my kit and cancels out the natural sound of my kit. I just use a touch of reverb and half the time I can’t tell if my headphones are in or not
Totally agree👍👍👍
I will say el estepario siberiano had a video on how he sets his EAD-10 and he only uses one or two clicks from the bottom of the compression knob.
Make the audio file available so others can mess with it. I'm an audio engineer and I'd love to play with the audio
I love the EAD10. I barely have the compression on. Mainly because I hate how it makes the drums sound lol
I couldn’t get my ead10 to pick up my bass drum trigger at all. No matter the settings. Had to send it back.
EAD10 with about 25% compression for me. Also, I just bought that same snare 🤤
I always bypass effects and trigger and do like 1 notch of reverb
Stuff being too compressed is so real
Wonder what would happen if you threw the ead10 raw into ai stem splitter would you get the drums and cymbals somewhat separated
as long as you have little to no compression. if you send compressed audio into ai stem splitters, your cymbals are affected by the ducking that happens when other drums are hit with them
This is an illness that we see even with big productions in the studio. The recents Ozzy's albums are good examples. It's just a bad hip thing to use to much compression on drums these days. It will pass.

Very nice, thanks :D
FINALLY someone said it
Ok.
Thank you for exposing Elstepario!
Amazing!!!
I cant stand the ead sound, im sure it makes recording drums easy but that sound...
Here’s my EAD10-sound. My fix was adding 5 Yamaha-triggers: enjoy ✌🏻🤩
