My Uncle, Harry WRIGHT, aged 22, was the stoker who died on the armed trawler “WALLASEA” (T-345) built in 1943, which was sunk by a German motor torpedo boat off Mounts Bay, Cornwall, 6/1/1944. 17 members of the WALLASEA’s crew are interred in the Penzance Cemetery. He was buried with full naval honours on 12/1/1944 This closely knit sea-going family includes an Able Seaman, the Cook, an Engineman, a Leading Steward, an Ordinary Signalman, a Seaman, a Second Hand, a Stoker (Harry WRIGHT, aged 22) {my mother's youngest brother} & a Telegraphist. 😪
Hi David, where can I purchase a copy of this book? My great grandfather, Christopher Hodgson, died in this attack. He was on HMT Wallasea. I tried to follow your link but it doesn't take me to anywhere I can purchase this. Many thanks
I am not sure there actually is a book ? There are a few references on the web where Mr Betts has mentioned it including in a genealogy article in the Shelby Village Magazine . He seems to have had a career as an archivist including for Leicestershire CC. . He also mentions it in comments on a site about the linked Slapton Sands disaster . I too have a personal link to Aubrey Ivatt the young WO of the HMS Wallasey who was my late fathers best friend and shipmate . I have letters and poems from him . The trail of Mr Betts and his book which he clearly had researched has gone cold as evidenced by the lack of response here . I would dearly like there to be a book and would purchase it but I fear he may never have got to that point . Perhaps he will pop up here again one day
Hi David, very interesting, my grandfather was involved in this action as a DEMS gunner on the Castle Combe.
