  • How to install a generator transfer switch with a step by step explanation of the process.
In Florida this is very useful for hurricanes and tropical storm weather during power outages.
WARNING! Do not attempt if you are inexperienced with electrical work. Check with your local municipality for codes and permit requirements before starting any work. If you have any doubts, consult a licensed electrician.
Check that your transfer switch and generator are compatible... If your generator says "neutral bonded to frame" you will need to change some wiring to connect it to a transfer switch designed to work with neutral floating generators. I have not covered this step in the video.
Otherwise… Happy wiring and stay safe!

Your generator says "neutral bonded to frame". that switch was intended for neutral floating generators.

What gauge did you use to connect to the outside generator port with the transfer switch ?

What specific cable did you choose to use from the inlet box to the transfer switch? I think they recommend 10 AWG, but for some (10/4) they say a max of 25A. Did you go with 8/3 WG?

How exactly do the wattage meters work and how does this help you.

Why can't you do the same thing basicly with a heavy duty double male ended cord by shutting the main power off to your electrical panel coming in from the outside. Then plug that cord into your generator and the other end to an outlet ther by energizing the panel. Turn off all circuit breakers in the panel except the ones you want to run. Wouldn't that get the same results by only energizing the certain circuts you want to use without all the fuss and bother of a transfer box??

Yes, it's essentially the same thing... except for one huge difference. Safety. The transfer switches are designed to allow you to easily and safely switch from street power to house power, with ZERO chance of those two power sources connecting. With a transfer switch, you also never have to turn off the main breaker.

Did you have to worry about floating/bonded neutral with the generator?

Yes you have to make sure they're compatible. This can help: generatorbible.com/blog/bonded-to-floating-neutral/
