According to Corporate, it was because guests complained that they could not see the characters all the time. I feel the main reason is actually cost and maintenance issues. The curtains frequently broke, ripped, and malfunctioned. I still miss them every CEC visit though... :(

When were they removed?
They were disabled nationwide in mid-late 2005, but removed over the last several years on a location by location basis...
