What a gift he has for selecting registration; everything in perfect balance. It sounded like a sunny day alongside a river with a carousel and boats on flickering water reflections. Perfect everything else as well, including of course the videography and sound recording and post-production.
I would say the piece opens at night. However i do not know whether we should still be in Vienna or aboard the International Space Station in the later parts.
My sentiments exactly as George Wilson. No need for an orchestra when Jonathan is playing the Bridgewater Hall organ AND Tom is doing the video and audio!!!!. BRAVO!!
Shades of the “2001 a space odyssey” space shuttle! It came to mind almost immediately. That is my favorite scene in that classic film. Great music always transports one to idyllic estates where all else just fades into a fly away mist if only temporary; and it’s enough. Thank you Mr. Scott for another glorious escape to the most happy muses. PWG
He certainly is. The only thing that lets this and his other videos down, is the analog recording system. It would seem he is using compressor/limiters, but they are notorious for introducing lots of noise if the music is quiet. Quiet passages are drenched in 'Tape-hiss', which spoils it. :( (see very start of this piece) A digital-audio recorder when he performs his videos would greatly improve the overall enjoyment of his playing. Just sayin'..... ;)
I've seen performer after performer playing their instruments, but this man is simply THE BEST! I'm practically at a loss for words. Absolutely stunning selection, performance, execution, EVERYTHING! THANK YOU!!!
That's awesome, what goes on a great organ!!! The acoustic dream on a great HiFi system. Thank you for it! Many greetings from the Rhineland in Germany. Ulli Fabian
Hello. I found this purely by accident, but now I'm hooked! There's nothing Dr Scott cannot play on the organ! Unparalleled brilliance and talent! I already listened to it five times this morning only!
I must listen to this performance at least once a day...REALLY! It calms me down during this horrible Pandemic. You and your brother are helping all of us cope at this traumatic time. THANK YOU. By the way, I LOVE your performances with Tom. The playing and interaction always makes me smile.
Grazie grazie grazie.!
This has always been a beautiful piece, but this rendition has sent it spiralling into the clouds above other pieces! So too has my appreciation of the absolute talent at play here. The Scott Brothers have always been organists of significant renown, but this performance has hurtled Jonathan Scott into the realm of talented musicians so rarely seen in history! What a performance!!!!
As one delves into Jonathan Scott's organ transcription of Strauss's "An der schönen blauen Donau," performed at the majestic Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, the piece's essence, audaciously unspooled on an instrument as grand as the organ, takes on a sublime new dimension. Scott's performance is a testament to his profound understanding of both the organ and Strauss's composition. The transcription does not merely recreate the waltz for a different instrument, but rather it harnesses the organ's rich tonal palette to breathe new life into Strauss's work. It's akin to watching a master painter recreating a watercolor as an oil painting-different mediums, but the essence of the beauty remains. The grandeur of the Bridgewater Hall's organ becomes an orchestra under Scott's skilled hands, each register, each key, meticulously utilized to simulate the various orchestral elements. In Scott's version, the organ's pipes become the sweeping strings, the vibrant woodwinds, and the bold brass of an orchestra, yet retain the distinct, harmonious colorations that only an organ can produce. The result is a sonic tapestry that feels at once intimate and expansive. In terms of dynamics, Scott brings out the subtle variations of the waltz with surgical precision. The ebb and flow of the melody, the nuanced crescendos and decrescendos, reflect the inherent dynamism of the Danube itself. The triumphant motifs of the waltz swell with majestic grandeur, while the quieter passages trickle with an undercurrent of intimate reflection. The performance is filled with emotional depth and tonal complexity that tug at our cognitive and emotional responses to music. It underscores how an accomplished musician can transform a piece through the lens of a different instrument, revealing new layers of beauty and meaning. The subtle changes in tempo, the dynamic shifts, all create an emotional narrative that is uniquely resonant in the organ's voice. Jonathan Scott's organ transcription of "An der schönen blauen Donau" is a stunning exploration of the work's musical potential. It is a testament to the organ's orchestral prowess and to Scott's masterful musicianship. This interpretation transforms the familiar waltz into an exhilarating sonic journey that both respects and reinvents Strauss's masterpiece, echoing the dynamic beauty of the Danube in all its resplendent glory.
One of your fans told me, when I asked, what the age difference is between you and your brother, Tom. I was surprised since I thought you, Jonathan, was the younger brother. You both are handsome and amazingly gifted musicians. In all my years as a singer and musician, I have NEVER such amazing talent listening to you and your brother. PLEASE come to the US for a concert. The crowd will be amazing!!! Gina Dodds, Bellmore, NY USA
Oh wow, this brought such a smile to my face. Just needed waltzing couples to just make the entire thing amazing. I'm going to order some of these scores because they are quite well transcribed.

In this piece, at times you get just a feel of how magnificent it must sound in that hall, at other times it sounds like a fairground organ - I can just visualise the cardboard sheets going through! (Which is quite a feat for such a mighty instrument.) A tour de force. Excellent arrangement - and of course playing. (And not to forget his brother for the excellent recording and video, too.)

All along I was under the impression that Andre Rieu's orchestration was beautiful. It can't hold a candle to this, this is so brilliant. What talent.
André Rieu is more show than music. Real orchestras are way better.
I can always recognize Andre Rieu's performances when I hear them. They just stand out unlike any other. That's how horrible they are.
That was breathtaking. Played so beautifully and perfectly. That brought tears to my eyes it was so beautiful.
